The original Sketchmatch saw its origins in Twitter by idea of eL-HiNO, toonfed and Tebin-Art and later transfered to deviantArt via dAmn
The rules and way to participate have changed slightly since then but the main idea remains the same; we gather, we set a theme and then you must make a drawing based on said theme....
The catch is that you only get 10 minutes to do your entry!
Here are a couple of examples:
Yes! Each one of these was created in just 10 minutes!
So how will this work?
We gather over :#communityrelations: The theme will be set at the moment by the participants currently in there. The theme could be literally anything; french maids, steampunk ponies, how would you look if you were a superhero, the most crazy hat you would wear in a wedding, etc. When the theme is se

OmeN2501, creator of the following deviation, Rain, says in the artist comments:
"Story behind it is pretty simple, they want something form her, she cannot let them have it... no matter the cost"
Who is she?
Now the viewer is left with a series of questions... Who is she? Who is pursuing her? What do they want from her? Why is this thing so important she's willing to take her own life if that means they won't have it? What would happen if they get it? And most importantly; what circumstances lead the pieces of this story up to this point?
The answers to these questions are left open to the viewer. It's up to you to decide who she is.

Digital Art Newsletter - NovemberHello.Digital Art Newsletter - November3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
As usual, here are the current going on in the community regarding Digital Art. I want to remind you all that if you have any activity, contest, series of articles, chat events, etc. anything you want me to promote here, don't hesitate to tell me!
There is no volunteer for 3D Art!? What do we do now?
First than anything, let's give a warm farewell to the volunteers who have stepped down from the team recently: ditto9, DpressedSoul, DemonMathiel, StamatisGR and WillowXD
As you can see, one of them is WillowXD who until recently, took care of the Game Development Art and Digital Art > 3D, meaning we don't currently have somebody taking care of 3D Art. Who do you send your 3D suggestions to then? For the time being, please address your suggestions to Moonbeam13 in the meantime a new volunteer is selected.

A brief history of FellaWe all know Fella. If you have been a member of deviantArt for at least 1 day it's quite probable you've encountered him at least once, he's everywhere! And this shouldn't come as a surprise, he's dA's mascot after all! But how much do you know about him? Let's take a look at a Brief History of deviantART's mascot.A brief history of Fella3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Fella was brought to life thanks to switched, who designed him back in April 2001 for a mascot contest.
Back then he didn't look exactly as we know him today, his figure was a lot more basic and circular and his expression wasn't as human as we're used to today. However his main features remain, his mischievous look and his colors, most probably based on the site layout's at the time

PE: Digital Art VS other categoriesThe category system within deviantArt has the purpose to organize the thousands of artworks submitted every day and group them together in accordance to style, media, genre and/or theme, etc. Imagine deviantArt without categories, it would be a chaos! Imagine yourself wanting to browse for photography only; without the system organizing every deviation by media, you would find yourself unable to filter artworks that aren't photography in your search results.PE: Digital Art VS other categories3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Thus the importance of categorizing your artwork correctly. By submitting your work to the appropiate category combined with a correct use of keywords, you're a step ahead of being discovered by people wanting to search for art like yours.
All this sounds so nice and all, but what happens when a particular piece could fit in several categories? The category system as it is now is very specialized and has literally thousands of different subcategories buried down tons of more subcategories, which is both a blessing and a curse. Havi

This commercial isn't real...neither are society's standards of beautyThis commercial isn't real...4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
This absolutely hillarious video has been "infecting" the web for some time now (and I wanted to feature it sooner, but oh well, life and such). The first time I saw it, I was laughing so hard, because many of these things, I actually do in manips - sometimes not this quickly, but I do. And it is done daily for just about any magazine cover or vip photo shoot that you get to see! This is the true part about this video. And it's the sad part, too.
Uncover the fake Beauty
As a photomanipulator, I am often amazed at what other non-photoshop (or any other graphics programme) users will accept as real without question. Especially younger ones will be influenced by this image they see day in day out and aspire to be like it. To be as fake and "perfect" as the cover girl. How can you achieve anything like that in real life? You can't. It's that simple.
All that is left is Photoshop - the real one. You don't need a fancy plug-in to make all th
PE Feedback: Why some people don't want Critique?WHAT IS CRITIQUE?PE Feedback: Why some people don't want Critique?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before I go ahead and discuss this subject, we must first understand what a critique is - as a definition.
Critique is a method of disciplined, systematic analysis of a written or oral discourse. Critique is commonly understood as fault finding and negative judgement, but it can also involve merit recognition, and in the philosophical tradition it also means a methodical practice of doubt. Critique is an accepted format of written and oral debate. [Wikipedia]
Critique is basically another form of feedback; the main difference being that critique will underline and focus mainly on the bad parts of your work.
Why do people fear and avoid critique? This is a good question and it must be well understood.
A community of artists as big as deviantART is, involves a lot of creativity and hard work.
We all know how much work can last behind a photomanipulation. How much research, how many ideas ch

Our interviewees today are faestock, Tasastock, and SenshiStock.
1. Is an expensive camera necessary?
Tasastock says, "No, but they are damned fun to play with! You can get a decent camera for a decent price nowadays that will shoot good quality images in the right conditions. Obviously they're not good for low-light or anything capturing movement, but if you handle them right you can make do with an ordinary camera, I've known plenty of people to do so."
SenshiStock says, "I don't know much about cameras, but the best photographs you can take are always going to be the ones that
Traditional and Digital Mixed MediaFix That Miscat! is a series of articles aiming to help you distinguish between galleries that are commonly confused or abused in the category system here on deviantART. In this occasion we'll talk about Mixed Media, both Traditional and Digital.Traditional and Digital Mixed Media3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Mixed Media within deviantArt refers to artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed. For example, a drawing that combines color pencils, watercolors and inks in the same canvas.
To be considered as Mixed Media, an artwork needs to combine 2 or more traditional or digital mediums. However a big misconception is that Mixed Media refers only to artworks combining digital AND traditional and this is not entirely true. The combination can also be between traditional mediums only or digital mediums only and in fact, when you intend to submit to this category, you'll

Celebrating Diversity #14What is art? Probably one of those questions that will remain without a definite and universal answer. However I think we all can identify art when we see it, even if we don't know to explain why.Celebrating Diversity #143 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Art has a very personal definition and there are no rights or wrongs. For me, art is to find beauty and something worth taking the time to pay close attention to, in everything that surrounds us.
Some people say everything is art. Some agree and some don't. Regardless of your position in this debate I think is safe to say that maybe not everything is art, but everything has the potential to be art, if we know where to look.

But first of all: What is macro photography?
Macro photography - what is it about?
Wikipedia tells us things like "extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size" (Source: Wikipedia.org)
But is that really all that matters? It is a common fact that many people believe that macro photography is photography which refers to life size
