Please don't compare yourself to anyone but your own.
As long as we are improving from what we were, it means we are closer to the goal.
I wish you all good luck and I hope you are doing well for what you do.
I'm cheering you ! Let's do our best.

On Art Schools + Art Style: A response to EndlingEndling posted this [click here] answer to a questioned by one of his followers on Tumblr. On Art Schools + Art Style: A response to Endling2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It pertains to how his art school and supporters treated/reacted to his particular art style in an academic and professional setting. Give that a read first then come back here.
I posted a response to it that I also wanted to share on my DeviantART. (If you're getting tired of me ranting about my experience at school, sorry, but this stuff means a LOT to me. I want to try to inform other people of what my time was like there so that if YOU go, you're all the wiser.) Response was as follows:
This is partially one of my problems with art schools at this point in time. They're ridiculously expensive, and because of the rapid change in art/media industry and culture, fall into generally one of these two categories:
1) They typically have instructors who are remnants of doing their bes
Microsoft Surface Pro Hands-On + Thoughts for ArtThe local Boston Microsoft store has the Surface Pro on display, and I got a good solid 30+ minutes to play with it.Microsoft Surface Pro Hands-On + Thoughts for Art2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Pro is definitely thicker than the Surface RT and even the iPad 1, but it's not to the point of feeling unattractive -- if anything it improves handling a little bit because it makes it nearer to the thickness of something like a book. I had no problem gripping the drive in portrait mode one-handed. (Being a widescreen device, it can get a little uncomfortable in landscape mode, but only if gripped from the sides. Top or bottom is just fine. Two handed is no problem at all.) The great thing about the Microsoft store is that they don't tether their devices down, so you can unplug it, pick it up, move around with it, really get a feel. That said, the weight, at 2 lbs, is no issue to me either. I have big hands, and I'm used to picking up heavy stuff for long periods of time (groceries etc) so I can't speak for everyone on that -- but if I owned the Pro, I'd have no qua
10 Common mistakes beginner artist makesWell I made a YouTube video on this but I thought I'd post the script as a journal on here anyways for those of you who don't watch videos that much.10 Common mistakes beginner artist makes1 month ago in Personal More Like This
So the other day I was looking through some of my old art and uh… Well anyways then I thought I’d make a video on the 10 mistakes every beginner artist makes. And I say every because it’s not just myself, I looked around and I saw a LOT of other people who do these things too. I feel like if you can fix these 10 things then your art will instantly look a lot more professional. A disclaimer tho, I’m not saying that I’m super pro or anything, these are just the things that I fixed and helped me improve a lot. :iconmingteatimeplz:
I'm going to cross out some parts of the script that doesn't make sense on its own lol. But other than that guys this is literally everything I say on the video word for word so you won't be missing out on much.
(Here's the link to the video tho in case you'd rather hear a voice-over ;
PE :Artistic ExcusesYou know, everywhere in the world, inspiration strikes, new artists are born, and new styles are born. We all start as beginners and take our time...but then certain points...there are times when we feel a certain way about our art. Some people don't think that they cannot get better when you know you can. Some people feel they should quit....when you can keep going. Some people feel like you're nothing...when you are something...those things are called excuses...there is no excuse why you cannot accomplish your goals to become an artist. "That is awesome!"
"I love your art"

If you're wondering how to improve as an artist, the answer is...
Practice, of course! But, I've also come to understand that the attitude we bring towards improving is almost as equally important, if not more important. I say this because it is our attitude and mindset which may determine whether we are "in the mood" to practice or not, and of what subjects we're willing or limiting ourselves to practice.
I believe a lot of artists may feel they are not getting much better at art and feel frustrated because they've been drawing intensely for months or years. Some may have actually improved noticeably but won't let themselves recognize it because it's not good according to their standards or expectations. Or some may have actually not improved much because they have become

Bleach OC CommunityNow that I'm back into the swing of things and I have projects on the table, commissions being drawn, and open text documents running the background as I write this, I wanted to put a message out there for the Bleach OC community. Well, some of it actually applies to ANY OC community, really.Bleach OC Community2 months ago in Personal More Like This
I've spent the last five or so years on this site devoting most of my time to doing my thing in the Bleach OC/AU community. It started out small. I had gotten into Bleach after watching the episode where Ichigo and Renji first met and fought one night on Adult Swim, and all I could think about was cool it was that they were showing blood (Ichigo initially got his butt whooped). A few months later, I saw another episode and found myself completely lost, so I went online and streamed a bunch of it directly into my face until I couldn't blink anymore. That caught me up, and I found myself completely enthralled by the idea of the Gotei 13 and the genius behind making the art style so simplistic. I had

TOS verbage shamelessly stolen from wolf-nymph because she said I could...
The average person has very little respect for artists. I'm not saying they don't respect art, because they love art. Even if they don't understand the art itself, people understand the cultural and personal need for Art. But outside of the entertainment and advertising industries you find very few people who see a need for artists. I'm not sure how many conversations I have had where people ask me what I went to school for then laughed at me because I have a major in art and a minor in art history.
"Wanted an easy A, huh?"
"Didn't want to take real classes?"
"How do you like being poor?"
These people hardly ever realize that they've just insulted me. The same people that claim "I wish I could draw/paint like that" look down on the person that did the piece. Apparently art is supposed to be a talent that you either ha

- Firstly, I see my mistakes. I'm not as good as I want to be yet and there are thousands younger artists with wonderful art out there. Sure it's fascinating when a 10 year old draws a masterpiece, but instead of thinking "I must do my best too! Yosha!!" I see many comments with depressive thoughts. Age does NOT matter.

ImprovementOver the years, many people have asked me for how long I've been drawing. While it's true that I started drawing as soon as I was able to hold a pencil, I was never that serious about it. In a sense, you can ask yourself if I was any serious on art altogether. Because, in the end, all kids draw. I think most people can remember making drawings in grade school. Because it's something kids do naturally. Depicting the world around them with images. The beautiful thing is that kids have no fear. They just draw whatever they like, and are usually happy with it. It isn't until the age of 10 or 12, that the outside world suddenly expects you to be either good at something, or stop doing it. It's at that age that we become self cautious about drawing. And therefore it's around that age many kids eventually stop drawing.Improvement10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I came to that age as well. I have to admit... it kicked in a little late on me.

Don't forget to look backMany people say that looking back is a bad thing to do, because it makes you dwell on the past and is getting you nowhere.Don't forget to look back9 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I beg to differ! Because I think it doesn't hurt to look back on what you already achieved, every once in a while.
In contrary; it can be a great motivation.
I came to DeviantArt, almost 7 years ago, with close to no expectations.
To provide you a bit of a background; As a kid, I used to show my drawings to all the people around me (to the level of sheer annoyance). And in the early years of the internet, I posted my writings and drawings on several Dutch forums, where I got quite the feedback on it. But as social media gradually took over the internet, and the small forums I used to reside on died a slow death, I realized the stage of getting feedback there would soon be over for me.
DeviantArt was in that sense the next place to move to. A community that wasn't killed by the influence of social media. But it was a hard place to move to.
As a non-nativ

It would be nice if you could comment again, if you got your help so that I can take you down from this journal. I will take down most things that are one month old because I can't keep track of every help request.

No, You can not “copy” a style because no one “owns” a style.
WE ALL START OUT SOMEWHERE
Do you believe that all artists are simply born with natural talent? That, without looking at another piece of art their own life, they are able to produce master pieces?
Of course not. They have to learn. They learn from artists in the past. They have teachers. They study other people’s artworks.
That’s how life works. You have to learn from somebody to get somewhere.
If no one is willing to share what they know or learn from others, we can't make advances in anything. (ie. the medical field)
One can not simply wake up one morning and produce a masterpiece. They have to learn, practice and look fo

The concept of "original characters" may be a bit foreign to writers, as when you create a piece of literature, in most cases, everyone in the story is an original character. However, with advent of role-playing (in its many various forms), non-writers and writers alike found themselves created characters to use in games and otherwise. Sometimes the characters represent themselves, other times not. The main thing that remains the same is that they are loved and cherished by their creator. And who doesn't love showing off their creations. A while ago, I ran a poll asking my watchers and visitors to share some o
Went Undercover as a Student at a UniversitySorry for lack of updates, I have been away for a bit. But now I am back to tell more stories and upload more art. Anyway. Sometimes Ry can be a troll (Just sometimes). And I did exactly that last week actually. I pulled off a 21 Jump Street. Right, so I was in Melbourne for a convention and I also stayed longer for a few days to hang out with friends. The night before convention, my friend Alice (Who is a core member of the Japan Club) invited me to visit her University at RMIT for a Japanese movie night as part of her Japan Club's activity. At first I was a bit unsure whether I should go or not since I am not a member of the club or the Uni. But I do like to watch Japanese movies, so I went! :iconmingplz:Went Undercover as a Student at a University8 months ago in Personal More Like This
