PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b
Celebrating Diversity #1Welcome to this new series of Art Features! Even tho most of you are aware of the many many galleries and categories here on dA, I think most of us move in a sort of "comfort zone" between Galleries, Channels or Groups that provide us with a constant flow of new art. And sometimes we forget all the other great artforms, styles and media that are out of our "comfort zone". And today I want to step out of that warm and cuddly place and feature some awesome works from places on dA I don't usually visit!Celebrating Diversity #11 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Since this is the first entry, I thought I should explain it a bit more, so that is why there is more text in this article The topic of celebrating diversity is something that I really want to cherish. I am guilty of not fully
It's All About Presentation (Mostly)As more and more people start taking pictures of their nether regions on their iphones or posing myspace style in front of their HTC's - the competitive world of getting a Daily Deviation gets just that much harder... I kid. But... daily, I am bombarded with awesome suggestions (which I love) and I'm not complaining about. But there has to be a criteria of sorts, that sets an image above the rest. Here are a few things I look for that you might not have noticed before... The first thing I look at when I stumble across an image or view a suggestion from somebody, is how the artist has presented their work to the deviantART Community. It's All About Presentation (Mostly)1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Your image isn't everything. Not anymore. In the past I have given Daily Deviations to pieces with titles that are a combination of random letters and numbers, or that are very obviously still the source file title - or that tends to be just a keyboard mash-up. Everyday CVs are sent many many notes suggesting pieces o

Not that many people have picked up on this yet! Come on guys, lets get involved
(Original Gif too trippy for words!)
I hope everyone had a lovely break and are fully in the swing of the New Year!
Now this journal isn't a personal one, despite the title- in fact it is a journal I am challenging all of you to write and all of you to help others write. At this time of year, we've made resolutions and I expect half of you have included "write more" as one of those resolutions. This experiment is to help you fulfil that resolution so by 2014 you are sat here feeling achieved.
Prompts. Prompts are awesome. Why are they so awesome- because they get you writing! There are times when you feel unmotivated, wanting to write but not sure what to writ
Celebrating Diversity #3Hello, everyone!Celebrating Diversity #31 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
When we don't see enough of a particular art form, it is difficult for us to understand or appreciate it. This project aims to bring you features that you might not have seen otherwise from a variety of galleries around dA. For example, I tend to live and breathe photomanipulations and (to a lesser extent) digital art, and I really enjoyed taking a moment to browse the non-photomanipulation galleries for treasures. I found many, and I hope you will enjoy the features I have chosen.

1. Happy Holidays and Merry New Year
As the old year begins to fade into the sunset, it is customary to reflect on the passing year and make plans for the upcoming one. Some do this in the form of resolutions, some people make action plans, some people just swing into the new year the same way they swung out of the old one Whatever way you intend to welcome in 2013, I hope you're surrounded by love and that you do it safely!
I've been reflecting on the year and like many, with some focus on the unimaginable events of the last few weeks. Specifically, the shooting in Newtown. I know that it's "human nature" to want to find

This issue features digital overlays, which are created by layering two or more images (including but not limited to texture and colour layers) to create a final image, mimicking the effect of exposing photographic paper to two or more negatives and/or filters during printing. This differs from photomanipulations, where elements of numerous images are separately extracted and combined to make a final image.

1. Miscellaneous vs Other
Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u
PE DD Week: Why did an icon get a DD?Why did an icon get a DD?PE DD Week: Why did an icon get a DD?2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Daily deviations tend to be a controversial topic within the community and whether or not a DD is worthy of the feature is, as such, often discussed.
As a CV for Icons & Handhelds I often find it interesting to read these discussions, since that way I can see what the community expects of the features, but the recent negativity on the Icons & Handhelds DDs is something I would like to address, which is why I'm thankful I'm given this opportunity during the Daily Deviation PE-week. I will try to explain why I think icons and handhelds are worthy of the feature and why they may be dismissed just a bit too quickly.
Let's begin at the beginning.
When deviantART first started, it was a site that mainly geared towards customization. Be it wallpapers or icons, if you take a look at some of the first DDs. So how come there'
