The medieval Italy was different from the rest of Europe. With the advent of the municipalities, the Italian cities were increasingly autonomous and independent, free from any form of feudal government. The major cities were strong and worlds within the world. The beauty, the richness and variety of customs of war among the nobility was a sign of distinction and wealth. The quantity and diversity of armor, helmets and swords in Italy is an indescribable bottomless mine. In this case Assisi at the end of 1200 and early 1300 is one example. This city in this period reached a splendor and a flourishing impressive. Some famous writers such as John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and CS Lewis will be fascinated by the Italian people and especially of what it left at the historical level. Visiting Umbria and Tuscany, those who one way another, inevitably they will be influenced by the Italian Middle Age. Tolkien will be fascinated by urban and being a scholar of the Middle Ages even the form of government, governors, and superintendents etc. The kingdoms of Gondor and Esgaroth are an example. Gondor can be described as almost a fantasy transposition of the town of Florence, and Esgaroth Venice.
Lewis however is more idealistic and abstract and will be struck by the landscape and italics mythology and folklore.
