We're sponsoring Artists' Alley 2012!

We're headed to Comic-Con International:
San Diego to sponsor Artists' Alley!

We Love Artists' Alley

We're back at Comic-Con!

Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-Con again.

Six deviant scholarships

We increased our number of scholarships from two to six this year, and have chosen our talented recipients. These six amazing deviants submitted their Portfolios to the Comic-Con group and have been chosen by DeevElliott to showcase their work in Artists' Alley. Each scholarship recipient will be able to display their work in the Alley and receive critique from top industry professionals.

Cosplay Forever

We're hosting a cosplay art show that takes place from Thursday - Saturday, upstairs near the autograph area. This collection of the best and the brightest of cosplay comes from over 15,000 submissions to deviantART. The prints will be available through a silent auction with bids starting at $10. All proceeds will go to the Schreiner Burn Hospital, which uses cosplayers to cheer up patients in the hospital.

We are also having a cosplay group photo. Every cosplayer at Comic-Con is welcomed to join our epic display of cosplay at its finest. Join us on Friday, July 13th at 4PM on the Convention Center roof. If you want to be a part of this, be sure to follow our deviantART Twitter to get the latest updates.

We'll be hosting a deviantART Benefit Art Show featuring cosplay photography and donating the proceeds.

About Comic-Con

Comic-Con International: San Diego is the largest comic book and popular arts convention in the world. With panels, seminars, and workshops with comic book professionals, along with art shows, portfolio review sessions, and the various exhibits, attendees walk away with cheer in their hearts, bags of swag in their arms, and some tired, well-exercised feet. For more information, check out the Comic-Con website here.

Comics are art.

Every year, San Diego Comic-Con hosts a gallery of artists in what's known as Artists' Alley. For the second year in a row, it's with great honor that we can announce deviantART is sponsoring the Alley! We're also paying the way for six emerging artists to attend, hosting five interactive panels, and hosting a cosplay photography silent auction. Read on for all the exciting details.

Nature.... oh boy nature.  How the hell do we draw nature?  It's just so complex and so random.  Its impossible to draw something that's so random, right?  You just draw it randomly and hope for the best.... Tutorial over.

.... Just kidding!  Thats not how we roll here.  Believe it or not things in nature are not random, they are very ordered, patterned, and deliberate.  Nature is not perfect, but it tries to be and we can use that to our advantage when drawing.

Before we start, it's vital that you spend some time looking at whatever natural thing you want to draw.  Everything has its on unique traits.  Proportions, patterns, size, these are all things that vary, and depending on the variation will make the difference between a house cat and leopard.  And an oak tree from a birch tree.  This tutorial is going to focus on helping you identify the patterns that occur in nature.

Lets start with a tree:

Trees, by and large, grow in a repeating pattern.  Things influence the pattern such as sunlight (as all trees grow towards the sun), storms, disease, and what other creatures might do to it in it's life time.  But it TRIES to grow in the same  repeating pattern.

Above i have a particular patterned shape.  lets see how many times it repeats....

As you can see that fork shape repeats consistently throughout the tree,  and it looks like it continues to the smallest twigs. (i didn't highlight all of them as i didn't want the image to become a clusterfluff of colored lines.)  But do you see how that fork shape repeats at the end of nearly every branch?

Lets look at another tree example....

This one is a little tough because the silhouette is messing with my depth perception and you can't see the ground so I'm not sure how many trees I'm actually looking at here.  But you can still see the pattern:

That forking "Y" shape repeats over and over and over and over and over again. Smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller until you reach the tiniest twigs.

Drawing trees doesn't seem so hard now does it?

Lets look at something a little tougher, like animals.

Most large animals are built nearly the same way: Head, body. 4 limsbs. Feet and/or hands.  Looking at pictures of these animals I know you can work out the specifics... but what about animals that have stripes, or spots?  Do we just draw random dots and lines on them?  Nope!  Just like the tree there is a specific pattern to them.

Lets look at a Zebra:

Until I actually looked at this picture, I thought a Zebra's Stripes were just vertically up and down across the whole body..... then i looked closely at this picture and noticed the pattern.  Do you see it?

Half way in the Zebra's body, the stripes switch from being vertical to being horizontal.  It blew my mind.  But that's what I'm talking about.  Identifying the patterns you see in nature will help you draw them on your page.

Lets look at an animal with a bit more of complex pattern on their coat.... A Jaguar.

This one might blow your mind.  How the crap are you going to figure out the pattern to these spots?  They just look like they're random all over the body, right?... well no, not really

Look carefully they're actually arranged VERY orderly....

Well look at what we have here... Could it be the spots are arranged in a near perfect grid?  The grid stretches around the body almost like a wire frame you'd see in a CG model. In each one of those squares is a Jaguar Spot.  Now much like the tree, it isn't PERFECT, one square has two spots in it. Another spot lays right on a line.  But Its VERY close.  Close enough so that you can use it the next time you have to draw such an animal.

I could go on and on forever.  Just like past tutorials, we're just going to scratch the surface here, and let you dive in deeper.  But this technique can be found in EVERYTHING you see in nature,  Not just living things either. Rocks, landscapes, clouds, Everything from the smallest atom, to the largest galaxy is organized and ordered in a specific pattern.   If you want to draw it, you just need to identify the pattern and reproduce it.

I hope this helps!

If there is something you'd like me to do a tutorial on, I'd be happy to!  You just have to tell me what you'd like to see!  Leave me a comment here, or email me and I'll  get it up on my blog schedule!

If you are interested in a different commission type that is not shown in this widget (for example: Pokemon drawing, waist up, knees up, sketch, etc) send me a note please and I will set it!

:pointr: Point coms can only be bought through the COMMISSION WIDGET!. Please do not send me points through 'donate'- follow the widget's instructions.
:pointr: Interested in an other commission type than the ones on my page/s commission widget? or multiple characters, background, additional details like wings and other, things that cost more? Comment/ note me, and I will add such commission option :3
:pointr: If you have questions- ask :3
:pointr: Please be patient, I work as fast as I can, but I also have other art to work on.

:star: Any support is greatly appreciated!

1. Accepted Payment Methods

Love Points Stamp by Drake1
-DA POINTS :points:; paid through the commission widget. do not send me points through 'donate' please.
Refunds are not available, please keep this in mind. Please be sure about commissioning me.

2. Copyright Stuff

-Commissions are only for your personal use. That means you can use them in your own websites, logos, avatars, print them out and put on your wall and so on. But you can't say that it was done by you, you can't sell them in any way (prints and other) and you are not able to submit them into your gallery without credits to my DA page and link to my original work! if you put credits, it's ok.
-All commissions done by me belong to me and the credit for doing it still belongs to me, even if it's your character, the character belongs to you, but the drawing itself belongs to me.
-All commissions have two watermarks: one in a corner with link to my DA page, and another one on the character with my name/da link only. Arts with transparent background have only one watermark- on the character. Do not remove my watermarks please.
-I as the creator have the right to upload a commission on art sites I am a member of: DeviantArt, Anipan, SheezyArt, FurAffinity, SoFurry and/or HentaiFoundry with writing your name in my comments under the submission. I don't do private commissions, and I want them to be shown in my galleries, please respect that.

3. How does it work?

-To commission me, you need to be sure I am open for point commissions at that time and have open slots. If yes, then go to my main page, find the 'commission widget', check the offer you are interested in, and click 'request commission'. You will need to fill a small form, either there in the widget, or through a note to me (notes are prefferred, you can only post character name in widget) where you need to put your commission details, the more you add the better. I need to know the chara's name, short description, details, colors, 1-5 references (the more the better, pose references, and any other additional thoughts:) simply a detailed description of what you want me to draw for you. You can of course tell me only half of this, and leave the rest for me to decide (for example pose, expression, clothes etc).
-Payment is in advance The widget will take the point amount from you automatically when I agree to your commission request. So if you're not able to pay me, don't ask to commission me please. You will be able to see sketch of course, and if you don't like it I will redraw it once (change pose/clothes ect what you wish) and then show you both and you will be able to choose the one you like more:) and if there will be only small changes, like bangs/expression/ details etc, I will change it on that sketch. please understand this and think before commissioning me.
-Seeing sketch is optional. But I prefer to show you, because you will be able to confirm or tell me to change something, if you wish.
-I don't have a time limit to do the comission. It may take from a few days to about 1-2 months I think. But when school or something/someone else kills me, it may take longer, or if it's more complicated, many details or many characters, or a dress up, it WILL take longer. So please understand and don't rush me. I have my own live too :) I'll just try to make it as soon as possible;) If you want/ need it very fast, it's available too, I can put you on top of my to do list. But for doing for doing it within a certain (short) amount of time, you'll have to pay more.
-Remember that I can say NO to your commission. I am the artist and I decide what I want and not want to draw. Just respect this.

4. Receiving your commission

-All my commissions may be submitted to my accounts on art sites I'm a member of and that I think fit the site themes, These sites are so far: DeviantArt, SheezyArt, FurAffinity, SoFurry, Anipan and/or HentaiFoundry. I don't do private commissions, and I want them to be shown in my galleries, please respect that.
-I can send you original size through e-mail. Keep in mind, that the size is usually the same, because I work on such small sizes, and it still WILL have my watermark on.

5.Acceptable and non-acceptable themes

Keep in mind that my style is manga/ anime related. just look at my gallery to see how I work. you can ask for examples of a specific theme too, of course (if I have such an example I'll show).
A. I will draw
-sexy and cute humanoid girls (humans, kemonomimis, angels, elves etc)
-anthro females
-normal/ simple looking males
-female nudity, yuri
-some fetishes, like light bondage, light hentai, tentacle fun (ask)
-animals and fantasy creatures (wolves, horses, dragons etc)
-semi-detailed backgrounds (examples will be shown below) (must contact me earlier becasue the prize will change)
-multiple characters (must contact me earlier becasue the prize will change)

B. I will not draw
-difficult (action etc) poses- unless reference given
-some animals (ask)
-porn, some bondage, some fetishes, hard yuri, (ask)
-yaoi, blood, violence
-full completed, very detailed, hard backgrounds
-in different style than mine

These prices are for the said number of character only. If you want more characters on a commission, you need to pay 75% of the first character base price for each next character. I added two character prices for only some offers but of course each offer can have multiple characters.
Small additional characters- prize to discuss, info below.

:iconrealmsoffantasy-myth: Realms of Fantasy and Myth: Week 54 - Mandrakes

Welcome to issue #54 of my fantasy features!
These are now part of a collection in a group created specifically for this project.  If you like this feature, you can find more gorgeous artwork at the group, including some never featured in these articles before.

I hope you enjoy it, and please, show the featured artists some love and recognition through pageviews, :+fav:'s and :+devwatch:'s!

This week's creature feature is: Mandrakes

Note:  The legends and lore involving Mandrakes, or Mandragora, vary according to source.  This feature describes the "screaming plant", as well as the scientific one, as the former is directly derived from the latter.  This is really just to appreciate the artwork, not so much to educate.
Also, to keep this article from having to be listed as mature, several aspects of the creature have been omitted.  So please don't point out what I have left out in the comments!

From Wikipedia… :

Mandrake is the common name for members of the plant genus Mandragora, particularly the species Mandragora officinarum, belonging to the nightshades family.  The roots sometimes contain bifurcations causing them to resemble human figures.
[They are a] parasympathetic depressant, hallucinogen, and hypnotic. Most hypnotics produce low alphoid and spindle alpha brain-wave activity, similar to that found in REM sleep, or the dreaming state. This rhythm does not allow deep sleep to occur although it does lower brain patterns. Mandrake root causes delirium and hallucinations. In high doses, it can even send the user into a coma.
According to the legend, when the root is dug up it screams and kills all who hear it. Literature includes complex directions for harvesting a mandrake root in relative safety.
For example Josephus (c. AD 37 Jerusalem – c. 100) gives the following directions for pulling it up:
"A furrow must be dug around the root until its lower part is exposed, then a dog is tied to it, after which the person tying the dog must get away. The dog then endeavours to follow him, and so easily pulls up the root, but dies suddenly instead of his master. After this the root can be handled without fear."

Shakespeare refers four times to mandrake and twice under the name of mandragora.
"...Not poppy, nor mandragora,
Nor all the drowsy syrups of the world,
Shall ever medicine thee to that sweet sleep
Which thou owedst yesterday."
Shakespeare: Othello III.iii

"Give me to drink mandragora...
That I might sleep out this great gap of time
My Antony is away."
Shakespeare: Antony and Cleopatra I.v

"Shrieks like mandrakes' torn out of the earth."
Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet IV.iii

"Would curses kill, as doth the mandrake's groan"
King Henry VI part II III.ii

Journal Entry: Wed May 15, 2013, 4:49 PM

Months back, I wrote a comic about Jane Fitzpatrick's backstory (which is technically completely 'original,' as Jane and her background are totally separated from any Avatar characters or elements) which was accepted to be included in Grayhaven Comics' upcoming project, 'You Are Alone.' The project's Kickstarter was successful, and so this comic that I wrote and DoodleBuggy did a brilliant job bringing to life is supposed to be published later this year. You Are Not Alone will be: "A 200+ page anthology of hope with tales of overcoming bullying, homophobia, racism, depression and abuse." You can find more information about it here:…

The comic is finally done! And you can read it here:
Metamorphosis Page 1 by DoodleBuggy Metamorphosis Page 2 by DoodleBuggy Metamorphosis Page 3 by DoodleBuggy Metamorphosis Page 4 by DoodleBuggy
It is a standalone piece written for elementary/high school students, but it also serves a small slice of backstory for Jane's character.

It's been a pleasure to work on this, and I've also been steadily working on a multi-page comic that will tell some of SRU's last moments, as well.
In general, I've become very excited and interested in working more with the comic/graphic novel format, and hope to continue working with the format. As I work toward finishing SRU and starting Esteemed, I am also cooking up ideas for both a longer and shorter-scale graphic novel by re-tooling ideas I've used for shorter fanfics in the past, transforming them into original ideas. We'll see how that pans out, but in the meantime, please enjoy this comic, and I hope you all who are following the SRU and Esteemed projects continue to like what is made for those.

When people hear that I'm a freelancer, they usually say one of two things.

1- That's AWESOME. You get to work whenever you want.

2- That must be HORRIBLE keeping yourself motivated.

I never really had a problem with the motivation part until recently, until last week it clicked with me why, and how I had been self-medicating up to that point. So with that in mind, I'm gonna share some ways I find useful of staying focused.

This is a great way to cut through the crap and distractions and get LOTS done. Essentially, you set a timer and

Work 25 mins
Rest 5 mins

Work 25 mins
Rest 5 mins

Work 25 mins
Rest 5 mins

Work 25 mins
Rest 30 mins

Enough of a break to pee, get a cuppa or whatever. I use a little program called pomadairo to keep track, but there's downsides to this. The downside being the stopping. I generally plug in and work for about 45 mins to an hour before my brain demands distraction, or longer if there's actual problem solving going on. The pomodorro cycle sometimes wrecks my flow. Useful for boring things though.

Music is a great way to keep yourself pumped, and you can use it in multiple ways. I try and shoot for the hour between each break, so I often use albums as milestones. If you're familiar with the album, you subconsciously KNOW how long until the break is coming so you don't keep glancing at the clock and can stay tuned in. It's also a great way to stay in tone for the piece you're working on, with soundtracks being a great choice. Gladiator, Matrix, Lord of the Rings. Battlestar Galactica is one of my favourites for this.

If you're doing the late night deadline super mega crunch, I'd recommend grooveshark's Ambient station. keeps you mellow and constant. I swear by it.

This is a useful one, albeit tricky to find a balance. You need a show with a strong score and narrative. House is dialogue driven and enough characters to follow like a radio show. MOST of the time it doesn't depend on what's on screen (well directed though it is). Breaking Bad is VERY visual, and is a perfect example of what NOT to have on in the background. It's a great show, and deserves your full attention. Not for working to. Long series are better, as it can keep you hooked in like a long album. I use FullMetal Alchemist, Avatar and Battlestar Galactica (trying Doctor Who) for this all the time.
Community would be perfect, except the episodes are too short. Which is a shame, I'm loving that show.

I don't wear my headphones unless I'm working. Now when I put my headphones on it acts as a trigger to drown out everything else and stay involved with what I' m working on. Even if there's nothing playing. Incredibly useful tool.

I find if I start work after 10am, it's like I'm constantly trying to drag the work out of me. If I begin closer to 8am, not only do I have longer to complete my work but I find I've more energy for it and results are more forthcoming. Better still is when I take the take to visualise what I'm going to do the night before as I go to sleep, that way I can be subconsciously addressing any problems I might have with the job at hand.

I usually get 7 hours sleep a night, at least. This is non-negotiable, barring deadline days themselves. You don't sleep, you don't think, you don't perform. The same goes with getting out of the house, exercising and all that jazz. Energy begets energy. The more pumped you are, the more you can put into your work.

I have a whiteboard behind me with a short term to-do list, and a long term one. Crossing off completed tasks is exceptionally rewarding, particularly off the long term one. Writing lists is the BEST thing you can do. It keeps you organised, it keeps you focused, and its a great way of charting progress.

Hope those help!
