We're sponsoring Artists' Alley 2012!
We're headed to Comic-Con International:
San Diego to sponsor Artists' Alley!
We Love Artists' Alley
We're back at Comic-Con!
Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-C

Tutorial Tuesday: NatureNature.... oh boy nature. How the hell do we draw nature? It's just so complex and so random. Its impossible to draw something that's so random, right? You just draw it randomly and hope for the best.... Tutorial over.Tutorial Tuesday: Nature2 years ago in Personal More Like This
.... Just kidding! Thats not how we roll here. Believe it or not things in nature are not random, they are very ordered, patterned, and deliberate. Nature is not perfect, but it tries to be and we can use that to our advantage when drawing.
Before we start, it's vital that you spend some time looking at whatever natural thing you want to draw. Everything has its on unique traits. Proportions, patterns, size, these are all things that vary, and depending on the variation will make the difference between a house cat and leopard. And an oak tree from a birch tree. This tutorial is going to focus on helping you identify the patterns that occur in nature.
Lets start with a tree:
MetamorphosisMonths back, I wrote a comic about Jane Fitzpatrick's backstory (which is technically completely 'original,' as Jane and her background are totally separated from any Avatar characters or elements) which was accepted to be included in Grayhaven Comics' upcoming project, 'You Are Alone.' The project's Kickstarter was successful, and so this comic that I wrote and DoodleBuggy did a brilliant job bringing to life is supposed to be published later this year. You Are Not Alone will be: "A 200+ page anthology of hope with tales of overcoming bullying, homophobia, racism, depression and abuse." You can find more information about it here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1429812861/you-are-not-alone-1Metamorphosis2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The comic is finally done! And you can read it here:
It is a standalone piece written for elementary/high school students, but it also serves a small slice of backstory for Jane's character.
It's been a pleasure to work

OC Interaction Con! *DONE*The contest is done and I will be deciding the winners sometime this weekend. Thank you ALL who participated. I will put you all in a raffle and have Brai draw a name. Whoever is picked gets a Full body, Cell shaded picture of ONE character. ^^ i'm sorry..I just like raffles. ;w; HOWEVER you must provide me with a fullbody drawing (I draw what I SEE) and must have the flat colors provided..even if they are just little circles off to the side and are labeled.OC Interaction Con! *DONE*1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I am a bit disappointed with how this contest turned out. I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE the pictures that I did get, though! But as I was deleting people from the list..I counted almost 15 and the 10 who told me in notes. So that's 25 people who didn't take part due to being busy (OMG..I am so sorry.. ;n; ) or just didn't feel like it. I was hoping since it involved your own OCs it would give more incentive, but I guess I was wrong. This was also judging whether or not I should host any upcoming contests. Anyway, I LOVE the pictures you

Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone? This happens to me all the time.Colorists: Having Difficulty Finding A Skintone?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I'm starting out an image, and for the life of me, I just cannot determine what color I should use for the skintone. I wish I had a crystal ball that would show me thirty minutes into the future so I can see just how a character will look after applying all the necessary shading, anatomical detailing, and highlights based upon the base color I use. A lot of times, it'll appear too faint, too desaturated, or on the flip side, way too bold and gleaming like a bronzed deity caked in a thick lathering of walrus grease.
Which is delicious, by the way.
FORTUNATELY! The folks at The Humanae Tumblr seemed to have a crystal ball of their own. Not so much one that shows the final product of my work, but one that certainly told them of my many incredibly frustrating endeavors into spending a good chunk of time shading a character's skin only to realize the base tone was absolute g

Some thoughts on commissions from a commissioner.I commission art a lot. I've commissioned from many different artists all over the world. And after several years here are a few on my own personal thoughts on commissionsSome thoughts on commissions from a commissioner.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. List you prices.
- Whether its flat rates or by the hour, artists that commissions should list their rates. Most the time the old saying "If you have to ask, it probably costs to much." really comes into play here. I'm so much more likely to commission someone where I can gauge my budget. I myself am a single income family of five. That means I have a budget. A budget means I shop around. So that means when I am comparing artists if I know what I can spend with one and not the other, I'm more likely to go with the one I know I can budget.
2. List your customers.
- It is so much easier for a person to know where they stand when you have them listed.
2½. Update your customers.
- Most artists have an idea how long something is going to take. Now it's understandable that the idea isn't always acc

Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKSSo... that last journal was a doosie wasn't it? 500+ comments and counting! Yikes. I can always count on Anita Sarkeesian to give me tons of views, lol. All joking aside, that was a very serious batch of discussions. Anytime we talk about sexism and objectification of women in gaming or geek culture, it's sure to get a lot of responses.Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKS1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Sadly since Anita is such a hot-topic around the internet, there was more than one person who were trying to claim that there actually isn't ANY issue with the game industry involving sexism at all. To them, this whole idea that women are marginalized or objectified or treated badly both in the gaming industry and in geek culture is just false. It doesn't exist. And any attempt to explain why we need to change things is inherently flawed because there's no reason to do so.
So in the interest of trying to debunk that bullshit, I made a list of sources I accumulated around the internet to prove that this is indeed a problem. I think everyone can benefit f
Drawing lessonsAnytime someone asks me for resources and lessons on drawing well I always tell them to learn the fundamentals and draw from real life. Few people take me at my word and go looking for that.Drawing lessons2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well Dan Norton, :icondingo107: , the guy who brought us the new Thundercats gave us DA users an AWESOME chance to look at how the fundamentals work using DA's Muro App (which I gotta say is brilliant).
So take a look at this and you'll get a great jumping off point on how to draw well and draw properly.

Hey guys! I've been seeing a lot of point giveaways on deviantART, and so I thought I might do my own. This is apart of my 'Giving Back' campaign that I am trying to launch on my profile.
Anyway, I love deviantART's point system for a number of reasons.
One of my favorite aspects of this system is that it encourages young artists to become entrepreneurs. Younger artists who may not be able to set up a paypal account or deal with other forms of online payment just yet, can take safety in the dA points system. They can learn how to price their work, deal with clients, a
Wanna kill yourself?Wanna kill yourself? Imagine this. You come home from school one day. You've had yet another horrible day. You're just ready to give up. So you go to your room, close the door, and take out that suicide note you've written and rewritten over and over and over You take out those razor blades, and cut for the very last time. You grab that bottle of pills and take them all. Laying down, holding the letter to your chest, you close your eyes for the very last time. A few hours later, your little brother knocks on your door to come tell you dinners ready. You don't answer, so he walks in. All he sees is you laying on your bed, so he thinks you're asleep. He tells your mom this. Your mom goes to your room to wake you up. She notices something is odd. She grabs the paper in your hand and reads it. Sobbing, she tries to wake you up. She's screaming your name. Your brother, so confused, runs to go tell Dad that "Mommy is crying and sissy won't wake up." Your dad runs to your room. Manga Studio BasicsSo I've been asked what software I use to make my creator owned comic: Shadows of Oblivion. The short answer is Manga Studio EX. (the long answer is a lecture on how software doesn't make comics any more than a paintbrush makes a painting.... but I'll save you the speech.)Manga Studio Basics2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Manga Studio is a great piece of drawing software that takes into account everything a comic artist would need. Rulers, pens, pencils, markers, and brushes of all shapes and sizes. Nearly everything you'd need in traditional media to create comics is here in its virtual for you. Even my personal favorite, Blue lines! But some of you who may use photoshop may get confused. Some of the tools are similar, but not the same, it's a different interface by a different company, so things will be different.
So I thought for today's tutorial tuesday I'd show you two of the tools I us
Staying MotivatedWhen people hear that I'm a freelancer, they usually say one of two things.Staying Motivated3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1- That's AWESOME. You get to work whenever you want.
2- That must be HORRIBLE keeping yourself motivated.
I never really had a problem with the motivation part until recently, until last week it clicked with me why, and how I had been self-medicating up to that point. So with that in mind, I'm gonna share some ways I find useful of staying focused.
This is a great way to cut through the crap and distractions and get LOTS done. Essentially, you set a timer and
Work 25 mins
Rest 5 mins
Work 25 mins
Rest 5 mins
Work 25 mins
Rest 5 mins
Work 25 mins
Rest 30 mins
Enough of a break to pee, get a cuppa or whatever. I use a little program called pomadairo to keep track, but there's downsides to this. The downside being the stopping. I generally plug in and work for about 45 mins to an hour before my brain demands distraction, or longer if there's actual problem solving going on. The pomodorro cycl
No Excuses: I have artist's/Writer's blockFirst of all... What the crap is artist or writer's block? I mean, I understand what it is, but how do you get it? How do you run out of things to say, or draw?No Excuses: I have artist's/Writer's block2 years ago in Personal More Like This
From now on, I'm going to refer to this as artist's block as most of the excuses I hear are about art. But they apply to writer's block as well. (i just don't want to keep writing "Artists or writer's block")
So let me get this straight you want to draw something, but you don't know what to draw, so you're going to just draw nothing.... That makes no sense. It's like saying "I'm really hungry, but i don't know what I want to eat, so I'm just not going to eat anything." That doesn't happen. What happens is you say "I'm really hungry, I don't know what I want to eat, so I'll eat anything I can find." And that's how you have to approach your drawing.
If you want to draw, but you don't know what you want to draw, then draw ANYTHING. It doesn't matter what, just anything you can find. I know exactly what your thinking right n
