There are a lot of poor starving artists.
Do you ever watch the first few episodes of American Idol? I do; it's fascinating television. So many delusional people in such a short amount of time. It's glorious! A good friend of mine once said that the reason there are so many contestants that are absolutely abhorrent singers is because all of those people didn't have someone that loved them enough to tell them they're no good at singing. (Either that or the poor schmucks simply refused to believe the well-meaning people that might have tried to educate the cacophanous vocalists). We live in such a politically correct, 'I don't want to be responsible for stamping out your dreams' society that we're no longer honest with each other. Hence, beautiful trainwreck television in the form of phenomenally bad singing.

When a tree falls deep in a forest, does it make any sound?
Aokigahara, Mirkwood, the Forbidden Forest, forests North of the Wall... they all contain mysteries that you'd really not like to uncover by yourself. Tell us a story - what have you found in your imagination? A labyrinth, witch's hut on hen's pud, a pond inhabitated by kelpie, a troll, or something much more terrifying and sinister?
You know what your task is. Please remember that this is GrimGloomTale, and not ThrowAnyPileOfTreesIn.
If you feel like doing a research on any of the places mentioned above, please note that Aokigahara forest is a real one and photos found can be really not safe for work.
We've got a special folder for the entries. It can be accessed here. If your submission gets accepted, I will edit

Approvals and Tickets and Fraud, OH MY!Hello again, everybody!Approvals and Tickets and Fraud, OH MY!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
For this article, I thought I would go into some detail as to what I do here at deviantART. You've seen my recent articles so you know I'm getting more involved in the printscommunity group, but otherwise I may as well be an anonymous $admin. I'm going to explain the different parts of my job, focusing mainly on my prints duties specifically since that's why you're all here, right?
Did you have a print that was rejected within the past year and a half? There's a pretty good chance that it was me who did it.
So... Awkward. Sorry 'bout that!
That is one of the main reasons why I have been doing these articles. The more information I can get out there about creating a quality print product, the less I will (hopefully) need to reject and the more we all can sell!
When Prints are Approved
I wish we had the staff so that every print could be viewed and approved the second it was submitted to devi
How to be a good subject for your photographer! You should try to:How to be a good subject for your photographer!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
- Instantly listens to quick prompts / direction.
- Be open to any critique mid or after shoots!
- Have a decent understanding of what the photographer is looking at (light/framing)
- Pose naturally and (if in Cosplay) act in character .
- Be confident for the duration of the shoot.
- Avoid being self concious.
- Be aware of the direction of light (to avoid unflattering shadows, etc)
- Loosen up! Literally. Shake your limbs and relax your muscles from time to time.
- Avoid squinting. If the sun is too bright you will naturally squint. Close your eyes and ask the photographer to do a count down.
- Throw ideas at your photographer. Be creative.
So there you go.. If you want to make life incredibly easy for your photographer try and nail the above points.
While I'm shooting I need 100% trust from my subject. I also can't have anyone disagreeing with my requests however odd they are (unless I ask em to do something dangerous, lol).
This completely breaks my creative flow
Premium Content and how I feel about making moneyHalloPremium Content and how I feel about making money3 years ago in Personal More Like This
There's a new feature called premium content that allows users to make file downloads available for a charge. This seems to be something with a vast range of different possibilities that range from quite nice to to quite lame. Of course we are all always against commercialization and sell-outs and everything and don't want things to change but there are some interesting options here.
Obviously everyone is going to know whether or not this is something he or she could use and how much sense it's going to make for what you do specifically but there's two points I want to adress.
I always thought it was lame when people sell stuff like brushes or psd files. This is probably just my personal opinion and many will certainly disagree for valid reasons, but I think, if you make some brushes, and you ask money for something as tiny as that, you are lame. Sorry. Actually, the point here is not that it will kill someone to pay like one buck for something tiny, it's just that it change
Have you ever wondered....why more traditional artworks get less response then the usuall photobashed stuff does? medium level artists can pull of collages pretty easily but they cant pull of more painting heavy pieces...Have you ever wondered....2 years ago in Personal More Like This
its just sad to see that artists out there who put lots of effort into the paintings never get the credit as the guy who bashes 3 photos together and puts lens flares on top
December Challenge and November Winners! The ThemeDecember Challenge and November Winners!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Being that December, for many, is the month of festivity, creativity and craftiness we decided that we'd have a 'sort of' Christmas Theme. We appreciate that not everybody celebrates Christmas and so our technical term for this months challenge is 'Festive.' That way you can create anything that has a sort of festive feel to it. See the examples if you're confused!
The contest folder will be open on 1st December 2012 and will close on 29th December 2012. Be sure to get your submissions in before the closing date! Judging will commence soon after with winners announced on 1st of January with the next new challenge! We're tightening up on submissions now and your work will be declined if it doesn't follow our submissions rules!
The Submission folder can be found right Here!

:iconcyril-helnwein:: There are thousands of talented and inspiring people on dA, it can be refreshing and inspiring... sometimes one just has to ignore the stuff one doesn't like, but I guess that goes for anything in life. And a bonus is that it's great for search engine results.
I'm pretty sure I was the first of my family to join dA, over 7 years ago. I convinced my sister and father to join at some point too, but I don't think they spend as much time here a

$19- Start Drawing: Techniques for Pencil Portraits
Seven years ago when I was struggling to learn portraiture, I remember saying to my mom, "When I "get" this, I'm going to teach everyone how to do it!" So here we are, seven years later and I'm ready to share the knowledge I've discovered!
After years of studying with professional portrait artists, by reading tons of books on how to draw the face, and by studying the works of master artists such as Sargent, Bouguereau, and Vanderpoel, I'm ready to share the most helpful information I've learned with you all!
COSPLAY MAKEUP TUTORIAL!Hi guys!! Thank you as always to all watchers and everyone who faves and comments - I'm so sorry I don't have much time these days to reply to everything, but I definitely do read and appreciate them all!COSPLAY MAKEUP TUTORIAL!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been asked so many times I've lost count to put together a makeup tutorial on how I do my cos makeup - and I finally did it!
I hope this is a little helpful, although some disclaimers - I have Caucasian features, so my makeup will be very different to someone with a different face shape. I use a lot of eyemakeup, much more than a lot of people, just because I do lol. My eyes a pretty big naturally, so I line them right up the edge, as opposed to widening the eye by drawing further out. A few things like that to bear in mind ^_^ That said, hope you enjoy! *chu*
Any questions please feel free to ask!

In this tutorial I want to show you what you can accomplish with this simple sewing technique.
Don't be surprised if I go through the steps quickly. In the lower tutorials everything has been described.

Well, I'm hitting a good and busy patch, and thus ended up calling in various favours to get you your GND pages [more or less] on time. You may have noticed (Ahem. Artist Comments under the deviations - read 'em, people) that the latest pages have been full glittering Undergroundian colour, and that you need to be thanking LouisaGallie (formerly Phuriedae of the amazing JS fanart?) for that.
In fact in proper pay-it-forward fashion, it'd be really nice if you helped out some by supporting her work. When she's not being a wonderful fanfic sounding-board and colouring GND pages after a long day at the office, Louisa has been working as a games artist -

Is Reference Bad?I feel like I've addressed this before at some point, in some other journal, but I find myself either discussing this with people a lot, or coming across people who on their work proudly claim to have "used no reference."Is Reference Bad?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The biggest problem, and misconception, regarding references is that people feel like it's cheating or that it somehow cheapens their work. While I can understand the sense of accomplishment coming from using no reference to finish a painting or drawing, people who consistently do it are only hurting themselves in the long run. So in short, no, reference isn't bad.
Artists have been using reference since the days of the old masters. They would reference life, whether it be landscapes, objects on a table, or models standing in a studio. They would even reference their own sketches or other people's work in order create convincing paintings.
For some reason, a lot of people today seem to think that in order to be a good artist, they have to be able to do things without

What I'll have to do is send them off later, and you might not get them until January. I will however upload the pictures to dA so you can see that I've done them, you just won't get the physical copy till afterwards. I'm sorry.
Thank you everyone.
Make a post in your dA journal (the manual INCLUDED - I wont grant any wishes, if I see no manual). The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
If you wish for real-life things (not fics or icons), make sure you

I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KIDS SHOWIm gon b honest, whenever people say "I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KIDS SHOW" for moments in young people television that aren't even that graphic or disturbing, I feel like mentally rolling my eyes. With certain instances, like the murder/suicide at the end of Legend of Korra or the overt references to cunnilingus in that one episode of Cow and Chicken, it's like, yeah, okay, makes sense people would be shocked or surprised.I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KIDS SHOW2 years ago in Personal More Like This
But in a lot of cases it's like, dude, some people are a little old to be acting like 'older' or more 'borderline' humor being pocketed into shows for younger people are anything novel. Such as when people react to shit that's really generic and not even explicit, like:
"OH MY GOD A CHARACTER FELL TO THEIR IMPLIED DEATHS I THOUGHT THIS WAS A SHOW FOR KIDS"
"OH NO A GENERIC VILLAIN WANTS TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD WITH HIS GENERIC ARMY OF DARKNESS I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KIDS SHOW"
"UH OH A CHARACTER THAT APPEARS TO BE 'TRIPPING' ON A G-RATED DRUG THAT'S MOST LIKELY SOME SORT OF
