Keep Calm and Carry OnTony DiTerlizzi once told me that to become successful you just need to keep working. Even if it seems like nothing is coming from your hard work, you just need to keep doing it anyway. If you're persistent and keep at it long enough, eventually people will notice you and you will get somewhere. It's advice that resonated with me quite powerfully, and since college I've always taken the attitude of just doing what I love, with the faith that it will eventually pay off. I've had my ups and downs over the years, but in many respects his advice has been true. The following are examples of things I am grateful for, that would never have happened had I ever given up. This is not a complete list, or in any specific order. It's just a few highlights of special things that have happened to me that I will always remember fondly.Keep Calm and Carry On1 year ago in Personal More Like This

It's my graduation/Christmas present to myself.
My emotions are all over the place; I can't stop crying.
This means so much to me.
I suppose I'll write up a better explanation and story behind this later. I just feel like I'm floating right now.
Dear Poetry isn't just my username, it means too much to me to be only that. Poetry has honestly saved my life. Sometimes people ask me where I would be if I wasn't writing, and I tell them dead. There has been so much wrong in my life, and always kept it so hidden before someone told me to write it all down.
And last night, everything just seemed to click together. It was spur of the moment, and I walked into this tattoo parlor only seeking a price quote. The owner asked me how much I had on me, and personally did my tattoo for 25 dollars. I wanted to cry right then and there because he was being so nice to me. I think he could tell how much this simple tattoo meant to me. A

Hot Topic selling artist's works without permission
A Tumblr post has been circulating, where Hot Topic is selling artist's works as T-shirts in their store, including popular fan art without the artist's permission, deviant artists included. It caught on wildfire when one user linked to deviantART's Submission Policy, stating users gave permission to dA by agreeing to their Terms of Service thereby allowing dA to sell it to third party royalty free.
This is false and inaccurate!

this is my final say in the argument against natural born talent vs skill. we all start out by drawing scribbles that slightly resemble things. i was about 3 yrs old here., and had probably already been drawing for some time since i was brought up in a family of artists. drawing only gives back with the time we give to it, and it takes a lot of patience, more needed in the beginning, and a lot of determination to keep at it even though we are continually frustrated.
hope this inspires some of you to keep going, or some of you to start, it will be even better if more of you, my dA friends, stop making excuses saying you werent born with the ability to make your dreams come true. the only thing holding you back is yourself. drawing is but a skill which we learn through lots of practice, determination, observation and patience. if you also have the undenied passion for it, you may see yourself getting further than others.
it also helps if you're able to be ho

Seattle deviantMEET Wrap-Up!The Emerald City gave a warm welcome to its deviantART green brethren on Saturday, March 23, with one of the most successful deviantMEETs in history! With over 400 attendees, this event was the second largest deviantMEET ever, and the day couldn't have been more perfect. The Pratt Fine Arts Center had the honor of not only hosting the event but instructing the group on some awesome artistic techniques. The gathering kicked off with deviants mixing and mingling with one another, meeting artists with similar interests. At 1 PM, the screenprinting tutorials began, led by instructors from Pratt. We were surprised to see that our friends at Pratt even created a special screen containing a deviantART logo for attendees to use in their design!

How I Got Started...A journal entry from a friend prompted me to think about my beginnings as a mask maker. When I started making masks about 25 years ago (wow!) it was totally on a whim. I was born drawing. My fantasy art, when I was a kid, was pretty standard stuff (dragons, unicorns, things with wings) but I always had a good sense of design and color. I'd been dabbing in leather art...doing tooling on archery bracers and things of that nature. Nothing particularly spectacular or uncommon really but it ~was~ a good thing that I concentrated on tooling and carving first because I perfected my technique in that respect long before the masks happened. How I Got Started...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Back then, NO ONE made masks out of heavy leather with detailed tooling. It just wasn't done. Masks of leather were either thick and plain or thin and swirly/curly in the Venetian style. People used molds for the thick masks, and molds press and mar carving. People used their hands shaping the thin leather, but obviously the thin leather wasn't suitabl

Alright so we know that everyone usually just skims right past this part to see the winning entries, but I still want to start off with this because some thank you's are in order! Going through the entries this year was incredibly difficult (It usually always is!) because there were so many unique concepts and beautiful art pieces. After a certain point I had to enlist the help of my mom and sister, who managed to help me narrow down things a bit more. That having been said, there were a lot of last minute decisions that I had to make alone and I really focused on the execution of the concept and all of the little details.

Neo-Victorian Steam-powered Fantasy: SteampunkWelcome to the land that never was in an era that had never been looking forward to the future that never came.Neo-Victorian Steam-powered Fantasy: Steampunk4 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Welcome, to steampunk.
1. What is steampunk?
Steampunk is a retro-active subgenre of science fiction that incorporates elements of historical fiction, adventure, horror, speculative fiction, fantasy and alternative history. It exists as a hybrid genre that focuses on a re-imagining of the Industrial revolution when men and women create analog machines to achieve the fullest of human potential. Usually set in Victorian England during the mid- to late-1800’s or the American “Wild West” era, this genre incorporate the spirit of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells in their setting and general mood as well as the new-found relationship between man and his machine.
Steampunk has since become an aesthetic movement, sparking off subcultures that focus on visual art, comics, music, clothing, accessories and “custom mods” where modern-day m

I AM SO EXCITED!!!!
Go and check out ^ journal if you haven't already! What an exciting contest - two parter.
Ladies and gents, this is the contest to get your inner crafty person out of the dark and into the glorious light of a sewing machine, gas oven or blow torch. The first part is for deviants to make a tutorial for the "Artisan Crafts" - which included a whole lot of areas (even food!). The second is then to use the tutorials submitted into the contest to make something. There is something for everyone AND a number of prizes.
And you guessed it, this is something I am definitely going to give it a whirl at. After a poll and some discussion, I have decided to create a tutorial on how to make something like this (still working out the finer details ):

(trigger warning. that's all i can give you since there's no blacklist system built into dA, so just a heads up.)
I just wanted to say that being on deviantart has taught me that the artist community cares a whole lot more about copyright laws than they do, say: rape, hate speech, the well-being of children, uh, being a good person, etc. and it's bothersome to me to see these ever-present delusions within the community. I've been on this site for a little while (Since 2006) and I've seen the same thing going on for years. Where this gross sense of entitlement comes from, I don't really know. I'm guessing it's just something that continuously feeds unto itself. There are few things that deviantart users care more passionately about than art theft.
Example. I recently had someone tell me that they were leaving dA for furaffinity because of the whole Realitysquared tracing debacle (which was the dumbest shit I've ever

1. Take actual cases of art theft a bit more seriously.
This seems to be the one most people are on about and yeah, I get pissed off about someone stealing my stuff but what really gets me is how hard it is to resolve the situation. It shouldn't be that hard to get staff members to remove a stolen piece. More so when it's the original artist reporting it.
It doesn't take a genius to review a situation where the works are side by side and compare if they are indeed stolen or flat
