All artists have talent: a misconception?I hear this phrase ALL THE TIME coming from all directions of people, "You have so much talent to do art like that!"All artists have talent: a misconception?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before I wrote this journal I decided to look up the actual word: Talent is defined as a special natural ability or aptitude. I.E. being just a natural at drawing. While I will say that there is always someone out there with a natural gift in art, there are also people out there that just have a natural gift for anything that exists. There are natural scientists, natural writers, natural sports players, the list can go on.
Any time I hear someone tell me I have talent, I know whole heartedly they mean well and are praising me, but what they fail to actually praise is my hard work and dedication to my skill set. I was not "this good" out of thin air. Maybe I had some talent...maybe. But I think it is more appropriate to describe me as having the patience and drive for a certain skill which in turn becomes developed on. If you are truly motivated a

There is a sermon attached to this prompt because there needs to be. Stick with me, there is a reason for it.
How many times have you said the following:
”I tried but it didn’t work.”
You wanted to do something to improve your life, you “tried” once and it didn’t work immediately so you gave up. If external forces were in play, I might buy what you’re selling. However, I don’t think that’s what’s going on.
So here’s my question: Why didn’t you just do it? Now, I don’t mean to sound like a shill for Nike, but come on. Now think about how many times you have said the following:
”I did it.”
See where I’m going with this? The odds of failing will be higher if you try to do something instead of actually doing it. Try

Four thousand words.
All prompts are live
Here's what's gonna happen. I will list four prompts, one for each week of this month. Once a new week starts, the prompt for that week will be posted. Since I've been rather word-count heavy lately, we're taking it back to Flash Fiction. Because the prompts are going to be fairly simple compared to the past, I will be attaching a difficulty to each one, mostly to help you avoid leaping toward to most obvious initial ideas. Read on...
MAKE SURE YOU FAVE THIS JOURNAL AND WATCH FOR THE WEEKLY UPDATES!
April 3-8: A character does not want to go home.
Difficulty -- there's no abuse waiting for them when they get there.
April 9-15: Something they believed in their whole life has been a lie.
Difficulty -- no religion allowed.
WayWords (3)Hello deviants, and welcome to the third edition of WayWords, where we interview a single member of the literature community and see their personal ways of writing! We at LiteratureRoadtrip, well more specifically, myself, are glad to see that you have been able to make it, hopefully unharmed! At the end of this interview, as usual, I am supposed to give out a writing prompt from the lovely deviant whom I interviewed. Now, before I am to let you guys know the deviant I interviewed (no spoilers!), let me introduce myself! I am your host, Eevee1999, and I am delighted to see you here at the January 15th edition of WayWords!WayWords (3)3 months ago in Personal More Like This

It's September, which means another school year has begun. The break of the summer has finally settled and all the kids, equipped with their little rucksacks, are ready for education!
For young children, school is about learning and exploring those basic skills we now take for granted as we get older. We learn them through a variety of lessons, and reading is essentially one of those. Do you remember those stories you read when you were in Primary or Elementary school?
Did you ever read Magic School Bus? The series, by Joanna Cole, featured a class of children and their eccentric teacher Ms Frizzle travelling on a bus to the most exotic of locations to understand how things worked- from inside the human body, to a water system and even outer space. The
Dialogue WorkshopI want this workshop to be somewhat different from other workshops -- I'm going to break this down into two categories: technical elements and personal advice.Dialogue Workshop10 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
And I hate to say this, but the following information in this workshop only works if applied. Osmosis and good intentions do not work. Sorry.
PRE-EMPTIVE TLDR NUTSHELL
To write effective dialogue, there has to be a basic understanding of what communication is. Wikipedia sums it up nicely: the meaningful exchange of information between two or more people. It's easy but not at the same time.
This has to do with actual concepts for crafting effective dialogue. For the most part, I had to research the details but you'll be able to pick out what I added on my own. You know how I get and if you don't, you soon will. No apologies for that.
Links to the websites I used will follow.

ScreamPrompt #36, June 2013So everyone is all about their main characters, huh? All I see in the forum, obsession with the main characters. What they look like is more important than who they are and what they're doing. Alright. It is what it is. You all won't change overnight and I accept that because it's all I can do.ScreamPrompt #36, June 201311 months ago in Personal More Like This
Bless your hearts and hold on to your butts. Use both hands.
You are going to write a story ABOUT the main characters. But the main characters... are NOT in the story.
Stay with me, folks. Remember where you are. This is not supposed to be easy. It's why you're here, right?
So what do I mean by this?
June in the US is traditionally a time for people to get married. My parents' anniversary is June 7th. So the whole story will be revolving around a wedding.
The bride and groom (or bride/bride or groom/groom, for universal human fairness) ARE NOT TO BE IN THE STORY.

Lit. Daily Pick Volume 12: December 2013At the start of the new year, I promised myself that I would be giving back to the literature community here on deviantArt again like I used to. Before I began university, I was able to help admin groups that featured deviants on a daily or weekly basis, and I missed having the time and opportunity to help lesser known deviants have their chance to shine. Now that I've finally graduated, I decided upon a small project that I hope to be able to keep up with: My Lit. Daily Pick Project.Lit. Daily Pick Volume 12: December 20133 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
What is my Lit. Daily Pick Project?
Every day, I choose one literature deviation that I have recently come across that I found to exceptionally stand out to me. That deviation remains featured on my page for 24 hours in my daily pick folder for any watcher or visitor to see and hopefully view, comment, or fave. At the end of the month, all of the deviations that I chose to feature are then featured in an art news journal together. The purpose of this daily feature is to help lesser k
Writing Tips #4: Passive characters(this is based on an ask I got on my writing blog. I wrote a lot to it, with some links as well, and think it might be useful)Writing Tips #4: Passive characters1 year ago in Personal More Like This
"I have a WIP that is narrated by a character who I don't identify with because she's so boring. Her role is designed to be more passive than assertive, because the plot drives itself, but the result is a character who just takes in everything and though she has emotions about what happens, she herself is very flat. How can I develop a better protagonist who's more involved with the story? How can I make a passive narrator interesting?"
Every character critical to the plot or story needs to be interesting in some aspect. If a character is boring, I would recommend mapping out her fears, insecurities, talents, weaknesses, etc. to get a better perspective on who she is and how she solves things. However, for a plot-driven piece, making the character herself interesting might not completely solve the issue, due to there being heavy emphasis on the plot. The
How to Accomplish Good Word Choice1. Don’t use a Thesaurus—use a Dictionary. How to Accomplish Good Word Choice10 months ago in Personal More Like This
While a Thesaurus can come in handy, it is really only useful if you have a very good vocabulary to start off with and just need a garage to keep them all in. A dictionary, is more useful in writing because in the definitions, it often says other synonyms in the description, as well as decreasing the chances of having those slight differences a Thesaurus will give you. For example, a smile is different than a smirk or grimace, two examples in a Thesaurus for “smile.” If “smile” is going by a definition, it is, “Form one’s features into a pleased, kind, or amused expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up: “smiling faces”; A pleased, kind, or amused facial expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up and the front teeth exposed.” This gives you a lot more information to go off of, and could also give you some more ideas as a bonus.

My Dog is Missing D: (Journal #2)So today was the day that my friend would infiltrate the enemy base to confirm if they had my dog.My Dog is Missing D: (Journal #2)8 months ago in Personal More Like This
They now claim they never had an aussie or border collie now!
The lady that was there today was the same one that told me and my sister to give up. They were rude to my friend like they were to us and said that the other 4 workers that told him the day before they had an aussie LIED. And one of the workers at first started to say that the dog was healing-but stopped mid sentence and said they never had one. They also said that none of their dogs have ever been bitten.
Yesterday, the 4 workers told my friend Davianna the following-
- The dog got bit by another dog and had a big injury on the side of his neck that he obtained by a dog named ACE. I wish I knew what vet they visited, so I can ask if someone brought in an injured dog with a bite.
I am just SOOOOO mad right now >o<

A poem about my day.I whisked away to go to Wal-Mart,A poem about my day.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
When I got there I walked into a fart.
I grabbed a cart and tried to pry it off the other one,
A lady asked me for spare change, dear god she must have weighed a ton.
I said to poor fat lady "Not today."
In which she replied "What are you gay?"
I asked poor fat lady "Why do need money? Why not ask some other men?"
She said "I really need alot of money, I need it to feed my children."
I looked into her cheeto stained shirt as she stood tall,
I said "Well you should have shared the food with your kids instead of eating it all."
I got what I needed and stood in the express line,
And of course there standing behind me is a loud man who smelled of wine.
He would not shut up OH it made me so mad,
Then he fell over and could not get up HA it made me glad.
The lady in front of me said "Could you go help that man",
I said "I wish I could but I am late for a tan."
She said "No really he looks like he is dead",
I looked over to the drunk with his legs all spread.
.Portrait photography is not about making people look beautiful. Or showing perfect skin. Or sparkling eyes. Or hourglass silhouette. It is about seeing the beauty in them. So thank you, Photography, for truly teaching me how to make a difference between good and bad people.
And from now on, I'm taking the photos I want to take. And no one will ever take my passion away from me.

Do you want to tell us a bit about yourself for the readers who (for some reason) aren't Watching you yet?
Sure! As a person, I'm a bit shy, although I really love talking to people and being onstage (I play guitar, piano, love to sing, and have dabbled in theatre). I love musical theatre (I can basically name the composer of any popular musical off the top of my head) and reading, especially classics and realistic fiction. My dream is to become a writer, although I'm not sure what kind of writer yet. The kind that lives in a houseboat, heh. I speak English and French fluently, although I have a really bad ear for languages. I tend to be overly ambitious, but hey, at least I'm a dreamer!
