Lumi, a first previewHey ! :]Lumi, a first preview3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So I've made some new changes on Lumi, my future Visual Style for Windows 7. It will continue to change in some details, and it's certainly not over yet, different parts are still the one from Soft7.
Anyway here's the actual result :
White isn't it ? ^^
My main ideas were :
more "minimal", less transparent, and add a tiny color.
The window on top left is active, the others are inactive (mainly a difference in the shadow, but the windows themselves are a bit more transparent).
The "Yes" button is hovered, like the Music icons. The DVD drive is selected
I believe the caption buttons are too subtle right now, and I'm still trying to do a nice hover effect, subtle but visible.
It includes the new icons on the Navigation Pane, obviously based on the icons in Mac OS Lion, entirely made from scratch (all of them) with the subtle blue of the theme.
By the way, don't get it wrong, I hardly have time to play all t
Ten Rules for a UII'll detail more on this later, but I wanted to cover my ten rules when I design things. Other then following Dieter Rams' Ten Principals for Good Design, I follow mine:Ten Rules for a UI4 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. Must have a status bar: How else do you tell the time?
2. Must fit tablets and phones alike: Universal applications are key to a successful app store and OS.
3. Must have vanilla styling: Honeycomb was over the edge. Too much techno.
4. Limit icon use: while attractive, icons can get in the way. Steer clear of in menus and settings.
5. Monochromatic colors work with everything: Black, white, grey, silver, maybe some blue and green, light use.
6. Gradients are OK: Work with them to make them different. Don't do black to white. It looks stupid.
7. Stay light on the gloss: Don't go all HTC Sense on the UI. It looks silly and slows the phone down.
8. Simple wallpapers: Again, vanilla styling is important to the customizers inside all of us.

When did we decide that......the best way to view a GUI is on an angle, mocked up on an iPhone screen, with epically shallow depth of field? When did we decide that...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I don't care whether or not it's an app designed FOR the iPhone. If you take a photo of an iPhone on an angle with low DoF, absolutely ANYTHING will look good on it, even a pure white screen. I shit you not. The details and reflections in the phone's body make up at least 90% of the visual satisfaction, completely taking focus away from the actual GUI. "But it shows how it would look in the real world." No mate it doesn't. My human eyes don't have the DoF of an expensive Canon macro lens, nor do I use my phone holding it at a 45 degree angle, and sat in the middle of a professionally lit photography studio. When I buy food, I don't need to see a picture of somebody eating it.
On the flip side to making otherwise hideous designs look like the most amazing thing ever, a photo mock up also makes truly beautiful design look like crap. If you've spent days on end hammering away

Artists have always feared that they are unappreciated and that the march of progress comes only from business, science and their machines. 1984 was imagined by an artist projecting these exact fears. Our guest essayist suggests the computer will never be our master, but only the super high speed counting machine it was meant to be leaving humans with only one pure task— being creative.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through dA,
Not a troll was stirring, nor Grinch in his sleigh.
Deviations were hung in digital Galleries with care,
In hopes that +Favourites soon would be there.
The n00bs were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Daily Deviations danced in their heads.
And Fella in his 'kerchief, and spyed with his night-light,
Had just settled down to log-off for the night,
When over in the Forums there arose such a clatter,
Fella sprang back online to see what was the matter.
To the browser window he flew like a flash,
Tore open the tabs and refreshed the cache.
When what to his art-loving eyes should appear,
But an animated sleigh and eight commissioned reindeer,
With a little old driver, so creative and slick,
Fella knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than broadband, his reindeer were famed,
After all his favorite art
