In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Thumbnail Size Testing, Part 2 (Beta Testers)

In addition to the feedback we gathered from Beta Testers on the size testing tool, this week we're continuing our research by implementing a test that randomly assigns Beta Testers a different size for viewing thumbnails.

The New Sta.sh Comments

We've upgraded Sta.sh comments, allowing you to easily add formatting and media to comments. You can now pull in images to your comments and then draw on those images using deviantART muro! This new feature, powered by Sta.sh Writer, makes collaboration in Sta.sh even better!

Commissions
Commissions are a common activity on deviantART where a client will pay an artist in exchange for creating a unique piece of artwork for them. We're curious about how you use or take commissions on deviantART. If you accept or purchase commissions, we'd love to hear from you.
  • For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
  • How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
  • How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?
  • How do you prefer to communicate between artist and client? Via deviantART Notes? Email? IM?

What's New

Updates to Literature Appearance

We've made some changes to the way literature and Journals display on deviantART. In order to provide a more unified experience, we've updated the format of literature deviations and Journals to better display your text, as well as to optimize the reading experience for your readers!

In addition to the updated background, we've made sure that familiar tools for readers have been retained with the new layout. Readers can change the background from light to dark, enlarge the text, and more, using the buttons presented at the top of each literature deviation.

Additions to Sta.sh Writer

An Emoticons tab has been added to the "Add Items" section of the Sta.sh Writer sidebar, allowing you to add deviantART emoticons directly from the sidebar. This gives you the ability to click and add emoticons to your text instead of requiring you to manually type them out.

In addition, an "Open Draft" option has been added to the File menu in Sta.sh Writer, so that you can easily pull your recent drafts from the Sta.sh Writer without having to load extra pages!

Screen Shot 2012-10-24 at 5.36.59 PM by wreckling

Group Journal Editing in Sta.sh Writer

Group Admins who have Journal editing privileges can now edit Journals posted by others through Sta.sh Writer, which makes it easier to edit, maintain and collaborate within your Group. An "Edit with Sta.sh Writer" button is now available on Journals submitted through Sta.sh Writer in Groups where you have editing privileges.

Previously, this functionality partially existed using the original Journal editor, but the Edit button was only available when browsing through that Group's Journals using the Journals tab. This method still exists for Journals created using the original Journal editor; Group Journals posted from Sta.sh Writer will now open in Sta.sh Writer when using this method.

Updates to the New Submit Art Page (Beta Testing)

Several updates were made to the new Submit Art page, which is currently being tested by a select group of members. These changes include the integration of Prints submission, a function to remember your settings from one submission to the next, and an easier means of changing your main file!

Art Thumbnails in Journal Thumbnails (Beta Testing)

When encountering Journal thumbnails on site, the scrolling thumbnail will now also display thumbnails of the artwork included in those journals, so you can see the included artwork before viewing the Journal!

Change Log

  • The Community Relations Newsletter for September and October has been posted. Added by Moonbeam13
  • For a short period of time, the top of the Message Center would display "No Messages" regardless of how many messages were actually present. Fixed by allixsenos
  • Journals briefly could not be posted from the Journal section of a Group page. Fixed by kemayo
  • Various changes were made to the category structure. Some older deviations were moved from invisible closed categories into active ones. Fixed by shahyarg
  • Some ANSI deviation files were not recognized as a playable format when submitted. Fixed by randomduck
  • The Edit Journal button was hidden when Beta Testing was enabled. Fixed by kemayo
  • Some literature thumbnails showed no text preview when browsing. Fixed by kemayo
  • Publishing Journals was very briefly not available. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Deviations published in some literature categories did not have controls for toggling text and paragraph formatting. Fixed by kemayo

More Like This

  • Clicking the "Show More" button when browsing would sometimes cause IE 8 to jump to the top of the page. Fixed by banks
  • Users with the deviation preference 'zoomed in' would occasionally see a zoomed out image when reloading a deviation page. Fixed by banks
  • Browse and More Like This styles were tweaked for better use on mobile devices. Fixed by banks

Sta.sh

  • Publishing options were being cut off in Linux. Fixed by drommk
  • Published Sta.sh Writer items would have an incorrect grey background color for people testing the new Submit Art page. Fixed by kouiskas
  • On a published deviation, switching to Sta.sh comments would always be empty. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Updating a published deviation via API or changing the main file of a deviation would reset the size preference for that deviation. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Comment counts were not being displayed properly in Sta.sh. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Drag and drop didn't work in the Opera browser. Fixed by kouiskas

Sta.sh Writer

  • A very small number of deviations submitted with Sta.sh Writer had encoding issues. Fixed by kemayo, inazar and jekor
  • Raw indent characters were not preserved. They will now be turned into spaces. Fixed by kemayo
  • Pressing the tab key did not indent paragraphs. Fixed by kemayo
  • Unknown HTML tags in text pasted into Sta.sh Writer were not being removed. Fixed by kemayo

Your Feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.
  • Feedback regarding site navigation was mixed. Many users mentioned that they liked navigation as it is currently, while some mentioned that they would like for it to be more simple.
  • Aren-Elsa suggested that the site navigation should scroll with the page, so that site navigation can be reached from anywhere on the page without having to scroll.
  • arcelian suggested that a "log out of just this session" button could be added to the site navigation, for deviants who frequently log in from multiple locations.
  • Several users liked the suggestion regarding email notifications when a Note is received, though others mentioned that they would like to be able to turn them off, if implemented.
  • Some deviants would like to be able to watch another deviant's Favourites. Suggested by BojanPapic
  • When leaving a Group, some deviants would like an easy way to have their work removed from the Group at the same time. Suggested by LilaeaBluecoat

Deviants Stop By HQ To Chat!

A group of deviants came to visit us here at headquarters last week for a small pizza party, and to chat about More Like This, the Premium Content Platform, and some other new features. They also shared their thoughts about how they use deviantART and features they would like to see. How would you feel if we had a get-together like this in your area?

Here's a photo we decided to take last minute, after a few people had already left:

Discuss!

Critiques
The Critique feature allows artists to receive critical feedback on their work. All deviants can give Critique on deviations with Critique enabled, and Premium Members can request Critique on their artwork. Do you give Critique regularly? What do you find useful about the Critique feature? What ways do you feel the Critique feature could be improved?

IDK THIS IS JUST A RANT U DON'T NEED TO READ IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO *A*
So, :iconmzzazn: posted something on facebook a while ago that I totally agree, actually, we talked about it lots of times, it's about the "copying artstyle shit":

I really don't like it when artists heavily reference or plain out copy others and open up commissions for a much cheaper price than the original artist. Studying someone's art and taking a couple of features may be fine, but if someone looks at an art piece and can say: "wow this looks oddly similar to so and so's drawing style" that means you should change it up a bit.

um yeah, that's not cool! This makes me unmotivated and depressed! I work hard to get better, and I always try new stuff, add details I didn't use to in my drawings etc... just to make it "different"... y'know, my style isn't the same than it was 3 months ago, and  I totally know my commissions aren't the cheapest ones, and that my style isn't the most original one, but I can for sure recognize each detail I put into my drawings! It's unfair, being inspired by someone's art is very different from ''copying''... and when you make money with it, it's even worse... =_=

Sorry gaiz, I just wanted to rant, this just pisses me off so much sometimes...

kissu~

A while ago I started something new called 'weekly photo'. Every week I add beautiful pictures of different subjects to a weekly photo folder in my favourites and feature them at the end of a week on Sunday. (All these works featured here are submitted this week)

:lightbulb: To support this feature and these artists you could favorite the article. I give away 100 :points: to a supporter through random.org and he or she may select one artist that's featured above who get a 100 :points: too.

Please note that these journals are not about points!!! The idea is simply to support other artists.

 Hello, everyone!

Please, :+fav: this journal and spread the word so more people can see this.

__

I just got a note from honey-sempai173 telling me that someone stole my art and he/she sent a link.
I clicked on it and it showed me dA login page, but a fake one. Here it is:

Have a look at looooooong weird address in the address bar:

11 by naked-in-the-rain

I didn't type username nor password, 'cos it's a fraud. If you do it by mistake, someone will be able to hack your dA account.

If you by accident get this message from honey-sempai173 or any other suspicious new deviant/or the one with no artworks in their gallery, please report them and never ever type your password in the fake login page window they re-direct you to.

Real deviantart.com login page is www.deviantart.com/users/login (safe to click, but won't be found if you're already logged in)

Remember this.

And for more info, you might wanna check winehaus's journal below on How to avoid hackers:

**PLEASE READ** HOW TO AVOID HACKERSPlease add this Journal to your Favourites and share! This way everyone can know how to avoid being hacked!
UPDATE: namenotrequired has informed me that this problem has been detected and fixed. Everything should be okay now. However, I will keep this Journal up just in case it happens again and the hackers find a way around it. Remember to check for the "key differences!"
Have a great day.

Recently, people like J-u-d-a-s have been hacked, having their accounts deactivated. Fortunately, J-u-d-a-s was able to regain control of his account.
I will be telling you how to avoid the same thing happening to you.
First of all, I'd like to say that the hackers are very smart and deceitful. They have made a login page very similar to deviantART's, but with this tutorial, you will be able to see the difference between the two and know whether you really need to log in or if it's a scam.
Can you tell the difference between the two? (Sc

What's Wrong With This Login? by MoontheMew

I'm sorry for typing mistakes, I posted this as fast as I could.

+ I'm sorry to people who don't tolerate  hacker warning journals. Please be tolerant to people who might not know about this and find it helpful.

Thank you guys

Site Update: Improving More Like This

Thu Nov 29, 2012, 6:12 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Help Improve More Like This

In October, More Like This was launched to all Premium Members, with an additional limited preview open to all deviantART members. If you've used More Like This, you may have noticed that sometimes you might stumble upon results that aren't as accurate as other results. Today, we're giving the community the ability to improve those More Like This results!

While using More Like This, if you run into results that aren't as relevant as we'd like them to be, you'll see a small notice above those results. Click "help us improve these results" to begin teaching More Like This which results are more relevant.

This tool will present you with a starting deviation and two sets of results. After reviewing both sets, you can choose which set is more accurate, if they're both accurate, or if neither are accurate.

Your input on these tests will help us to provide an even better browsing experience through More Like This, and your help in doing so is greatly appreciated!

Be Vigilant of Phishing

Your account's security is of vital importance to deviantART and we're committed to providing our members with resources and advice on how to stay safe and secure online. To further these goals, we regularly enhance our security protocols and provide additional tools, such as the Sessions Manager, to help you maintain your account security. We recently experienced an incident involving phishing, a tactic by which individuals obtain account information using a false login screen, email, etc., which affected some users on site. As a result, we posted Be Vigilant of Phishing, an article detailing the incident and how to improve your account security.

Over the coming weeks, we will be posting additional articles on account security to #communityops, our Community Operations group. We encourage you to add that group to your deviantWATCH and to keep your eyes open for our safety and security blogs coming in the next few weeks. Remember, it's everyone's responsibility to ensure you have a safe and secure online experience.

Your Feedback

Thanks for the feedback left on last week's Site Update! Here's some of what you had to say.
  • Several deviants were positive regarding a potential conversation view for Notes. Some deviants mentioned that they would like to see conversations organized based on the comment that starts the conversation, rather than by having all conversations with one person show up in one place.
  • Deviants were pleased about deviantART muro brush packs being made free for everyone.
  • Both suggestions included in last week's Site Update were met with agreement and support.
  • Deviants would like a tool to resize and rotate selections in deviantART muro. Suggested by bloominglove
  • Some deviants would like to be able to set drawings done in deviantART muro as their deviantID. (Thanks for bringing this up - we'll get this fixed!) Suggested by FadingNinja and notoriouslyMe
  • Deviants would like to search based on image sizes, similar to the way you can search by resolution or ratio. Suggested by petits-bonheurs
  • Some members would like a "Return to Top" button at the bottom of each page. Suggested by mnoruzi

Discuss!

Sta.sh Comments
It's been a few weeks since we launched the new Sta.sh comments, and while we've seen deviants making use of it, we'd like to hear more feedback on it. If you haven't given the new Sta.sh comments a try yet, feel free to do so on this image!
