All About Yarn: Tips for Knitters and CrochetersAs a knitter or crocheter, one of the things that you begin to become an expert on as time goes on is yarn. Different weights of yarn are required for different types of projects, and different material will give your finished project varied texture and appearance. This is a guide to help you read yarn labels, as well as learning your own preferences when concerning yarn material. All About Yarn: Tips for Knitters and Crocheters2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The material that yarn is made from is placed into two categories—synthetic and natural fibers. Synthetic fibers, which are man-made fibers, include nylon, acrylic, polyester, and other fibers. Natural fibers are yarns that are derived from animals and plants. Some popular natural fibers are wool, mohair, cotton, and bamboo.
Another category that yarn is organized in is weight. Yarn is produced in different thicknesses, and it usually indicates on the label what weight it is, with 0 or 1 being the lightest, and 6 being the heaviest. Yarn is organized into weigh

Materials you need, techniques to hold and use the crochet hook and main stitches you must know, all in one article for you to start crocheting right now!
Why crochet is that easy?
Unlike knitting, crochet uses just one tool (a single hook) rather than two (a pair of needles) and you work one yarn loop at a time; these two factors are enough to make it less complicated.
Do you want another reason to choose crochet?
Well, another advantage is that it’s easier to drop your project and pick it up again without losing your work; The stitches won’t slide off just like with the needles, therefore there’s no chance of a line of stitches unraveling before your eyes!
Crochet projects develop more quickly (this is ideal for beginners and impatient people)
What do you need to start?
You won't need many materials to get started. The basics you'll need consist of a croch
Tuesday Tips #2 Scanning your ArtworkWelcome to the second edition of Tuesday Tips where we at :iconrising-artists: try to make your deviant life easierTuesday Tips #2 Scanning your Artwork2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Today we will be discussing how to scan and post edit your artwork.
Many times a camera won't pick up all the minuscule details in your piece, but a scanner will.
However, often times scanners come with one or two major drawbacks
-The scanning process looses a lot of color quality
-Your artwork is too big for your scanner bed.
So, lets talk about these two problems and how we can solve them.
What you need:
Photo Editing software (GIMP, PS, CS+..etc)
If your artwork is bigger than your scanner bed, never fear, solutions are here! While I figured out this trick on my own, some deviants figured it out long before I did and made AWESOME tutorials that cover every point I wanted to share with you all.
If your wondering about images that are larger then the one used in the tutorial, check out how I sca
A few words about failureYou must have a dream... don't we all? Dreaming about it night and day, imagining how it would feel, how it would be when it all comes true. And then you might feel you'll never fail. It's your destiny to become what you wish for, fate must be with you and there's no way you can fail.A few words about failure1 year ago in Personal More Like This
What if... you'll fail?
"Too often, the only escape is sleep" - or as I would say: too often, the only escape turns out to be nothing more but a dream in your sleep.
Do you feel imprisoned? I guess you've been plotting your escape for a very long time. Did it turn out well? Did you succeed? Or some kind of unexpected enormous force came out of nowhere and deviated you from the chosen path in such a way you could never get back on track - not without consequences.
If you're still on your way, still working hard, please know this: there will be something strong that will fight you without even realising it.

hey everyone! i've been getting a LOT of questions lately about brushes - which ones i use, where i downloaded them, etc. because of this i updated my f.a.q with this link: http://loish.net/deviantart/resources/brushes_small.jpg it shows which brushes i use, what the settings are and examples of how i use them.
although i understand that people are curious and want to learn about other people's techniques, i am often surprised that people don't look at the resources they already have (the brushes already installed in the program for example). lots of people are always looking for some kind of 'magic trick' to achieve a certain thing and jump on tutorials, brushes and other resources as if that alone will
An Overview of EmbroideryAn Overview of Embroidery2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Embroidery, according to the Free Dictionary http://www.thefreedictionary.com/embroidery is ornamentation of fabric with needlework. But that doesn't quite cover it. Embroidery by sewing with fiber has been done with everything from cotton to wool to gold, and with mediums as thin as sewing thread, and as thick as ribbon. While it is believed that embroidery itself is older, the oldest surviving examples are from the Chinese Tang dynasty and from Egypt both are over 1,000 years old.
Embroidery has appeared on clothing, shoes, wall art, and cushions on furniture. Most comm
An introduction to sewing machinesHello! My name is Arras and I've been sewing for about 12 years. I'm here today to tell you a little about sewing machines! An introduction to sewing machines2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Prior to the invention of the sewing machine, the only way to sew was to do so by hand, and it was a very time-consuming process. In the early 1800's, a number of different inventors created machines that could do this same work considerably faster, although it wasn't until the middle of the century that they would become more widely available. The sewing machine will never completely replace hand sewing- some things are just better done by hand, or are not even possible on a machine, and many people simply love hand-stitching- but if you're going to be doing a lot of sewing, a sewing machine is an invaluable tool.
Here's the basic anatomy of a modern sewing machine:
The backstitch lever reverses the direction of the stitches, which allows you to "lock" your stitches into place. The hand wheel operates the machine, but gives yo
