I wanted to draw a Thanksgiving picture, but remembered that pilgrims are not as cool as Native Americans and food, and I'd rather eat food than draw it, so... I looked up a bunch of tribes and their holidays and eventually landed on the Hopi.

HOPI AND THEIR COOL KACHINAS. AAAAGH. They're the wrong tribe for Thanksgiving since they're on almost the exact opposite side of the country, but kachinas are maybe the most inspirational thing ever. Ugh they are so cool I want to learn MOAR. There's not that much info about them online but someone on Tumblr posted a lot of good links to resources here: [link]

So click through and check out those links! There's speculation that the Thanksgiving story was partly/totally made up, but what's real is the cultures and traditions of tons of native peoples who are still kicking around today! Maybe spend November researching a tribe (and pigging out) instead of turning your handprint into a turkey for the 500th time (and pigging out).

(Also if you are ACTUALLY HOPI and want to give me a few pointers, I'm all ears... I don't want to accidentally offend anyone with my goofy drawings! Especially since I kinda want to draw more of these...)

Based on a fox kachina called Letaiyo who loves running like the Tootsas like flowers (okay, maybe not as much as them, those guys are all about flowers.) and a hunter-type black wolf who I can't find a name for.... Presumably he's taking a break from creeping on antelopes to run around with these little yellow whippersnappers.

Kachinas = still great.

These are inspired by Tootsa Kachinas, they are hummingbird dudes and they are all about flowers and even more about flowers that are being worn by beautiful ladies. You hook them up with some flowers and they will totally intermediate between you and the gods because gosh, thanks for the flowers yo. This is as much as I can gather based on my totally scholarly internets research.

Based on clowns and owls! The clowns run around and behave badly and if someone from the community is being bad, they’ll imitate the person so blatantly that everyone will know who they’re aping and they will feel BURNING SHAME. It’s a little passive aggressive. The owl guy (based on a kachina named Mongwhu) is just aggressive, if you’re doing something bad he comes outta nowhere and whacks you with a stick (stick not pictured). I admire his no-nonsense approach.

Awesome tropical fish with colors based on awesome Malaysian sweets! I need to go to Malaysia so I can eat all the tasty sweets.
