Believe In YourselfJust some friendly artistic advice from someone who has been drawing for nearly four decades...Believe In Yourself2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Believe it yourself. When you sit down to draw, believe that the outcome will be successful. Failure at drawing comes from not trying hard enough, not working hard enough, and not believing that you can get the job done. Success comes from working hard, learning from past mistakes, and believing that you can and will rises to the occasion. If you are confident that you will do well each time you sit down to draw, you will do better work than the time before. You might not always get things right, or be satisfied with your outcomes, but you will be moving forward as an artist. Repetition. It's not the only way to improve, but it's the only GUARANTEED way to do it. The more you draw, the better you'll get at it. The more you ink, the better you get at it. The more you color, the better you get at it. Never fear your drawing table (Wacom, etc). You aren't going to be dismantling nuc

The Walking Dead comicsDo you feel cosy and comfortable sitting where you're sitting now?The Walking Dead comics2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Let's ruin it.
Despite being a story of people who usually make it, The Walking Dead comics aren't that positively oriented. What's positive about a world full of mindless brain-eating zombies with very few living healthy humans left? (Don't answer, I know that for some of you it's a paradise). Come and take a closer look at these comics from a diffrent way than usual.
The basics. The Walking Dead is a black and white monthly comic book series, written by Robert Kirkman and brought to its visual life by Tony Moore. These two guys are the creators of the serie, however, Tony Moore was replaced from issue #7 by Charlie Adlard (which didn't stop him from making the covers through issue #24). And, of course, there's also Cliff Rathburn, who's

I have enough after getting a gift for my bro of extending his for a year, and (because I bought more points than I meant to by mistake XD) I have enough to give away a 1 month membership. I know it's not like it's a year but I thought I would give it to a random deviant just as a gift.
Okay so I'm leaving this open until Friday December 14, 2012 at 9pm EST (US). Please spread word.
I am going to give everyone a number and use a generator to pick one at random. All I ask is you share word of this, leave a comment, and favorite. Happy Hol

5 Ways to Avoid Being DiminishedThere's a discussion brewing in comics about artists being more diminished as of late--that readers, reviewers, and publishers are focusing too much on writers rather than the artists who draw the book. I agree it's happening, but I'm not sure it's worth sounding an alarm over. I never felt diminished, but maybe I'm part of the exception. Maybe it's because I'm an artist and a writer.5 Ways to Avoid Being Diminished1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Either way, I do have a few thoughts on what artists can do to pull themselves out from under the rug.
1. DON'T DRAW LIKE A COG.
If you conform to a "house style", then you're at higher risk of being treated like an interchangeable cog in the comics machine. Yes, you're more likely to get consistent work, but you won't stand out as much. Therefor you'll be sought after less by big name writers, you're less likely to make a lasting impression on reviewers and readers, and you'll have a harder time getting raises (12 others draw like you and for less money).
I also suggests inking yourself if it helps. Penc

Take it. Tell me your result. Be awesome.
I personally get Engineer.
If you wish for a more particular result, please post your answers to your questions and I'll calculate point totals for you, so you can examine what other persoanlities you have within you. For example, mine adds up to:
Scout 65 points
Soldier 63 points
Pyro 48 points
Demoman 17 points
Heavy 41 points
Engineer 69 points
Medic 28 points
Sniper 30 points
Spy 12 points
Which means I have a lot of traits of Scout and Soldier, but not many of Demoman and Spy.

My Thoughts on ImprovementI get a lot of questions on how to go about improving your drawing ability. I never really know how to answer them since every artist I've met seems to grow better under different conditions. For example, my friend :icondana-t: has completed over one hundred sketchbooks in the past four years. I've completed four in the same amount of time, but our trends of improvement are (kinda) similar because we learn in different ways.My Thoughts on Improvement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
One of the reasons I never end up making a tutorial is basically because I don't think they work. Plenty of people will disagree with me on this, but that's my honest opinion. There might be a lot of opinions I type out here you'll disagree with, so keep in mind these are just my views. Here are my general thoughts on how to improve.
Stop thinking about style. Style is something you will develop gradually after you've spent years emulating other styles, talking with other artists, observing the world, and pinpointing what looks best to you. Ev

It is so hard to get your work published these days and thank god Kevin
Eastman understands that. So having put together some special issues of
Heavy Metal recently I pitched Kevin on forgetting the idea of a few
DeviantART pin-ups or a gallery...
Instead we'll do an entire issue of Heavy Metal from the DeviantART community. Yup, 100 pages of dA goodness wrapped in slick glossy paper. We're going to aim for an issue as soon as possible next year. The page rates are $75 per page (all in including lettering), yes it is really low and that
Cicero's Voice Actor is a DorkMy wife and I wrote a letter to Andy Morris back in August of 2014 explaining how we blamed him for our meeting and inevitably getting hitched. We told him that we enjoyed his work and have been hearing his squeaky voice since we were children.Cicero's Voice Actor is a Dork3 days ago in Personal More Like This
He wrote back and the letter arrived yesterday with a signed copy of my Cicero portrait. He stated that he was surprised he got a fan letter, that it was the first ever he received. He went on to say that it's amazing that something he did left such a huge impact in someone else's life. He said that he should add matchmaking and motivational speaker to his resumé! Andy said we're both obviously very talented artists and that there are many fools out there that need dressing and that he'll keep an eye out for any jesters running around town.
His P.S. was "Feel free to name your first born after me... or a pet."
A scan of the portrait is here;

Fast lane to becoming a better artist.I often get this very question: How did you get this good this fast?Fast lane to becoming a better artist.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Now as I consider myself not being as good as people tell me, even struggling quite often with being an artist in general.
I do know how to get better and how to reach it fast. I'm still growing as I go and it's the main thing that keeps me going.
You need to get into the right mindset and the rest will follow. With the rest I mean:
3. Positive energy.
4. The NEED to draw.
Seeing growth in your work gives you the courage to work harder. You know that feeling when you're just about done with an image
and feel like this image is better than your last one, that great feeling. Use it!
Do studies! Lots of them!! Make film shot studies, live object studies, master-painting studies. They will teach you a lot about composition, lighting, colors, shapes storytelling etc.
You will hardly notice that you are learning thing
Interactive TF2 Steamy Story Time? So, I recently found out about a program for how to make an interactive story! I've been playing with it for quite some time now and it's pretty fun and I'm thinking of making a story for TF2. ;D Keep an open mind on this though. I am a terrible writer which is why I draw things more than I do write fiction. I'm also pretty bad with spelling and grammatical mistakes which is why, if I do make this, I need some help pointing out problems within the writing of the story. I might just skim over a big flop I left behind in the writing. Also the story moves through scripting a lot, so if there's bugs, I'll need to know how to fix those. Anyways what do you guys think? Should I start on one?Interactive TF2 Steamy Story Time?5 months ago in Personal More Like This
