I removed the cap from the wineskin and took a sip of water. "Damn," I said, as I screwed the lid back on. "Why isn't he here yet?" The sunlight grew warmer, yet diffused, and blanketed everything in reds, oranges and yellows. Despite the brilliant golden light, the shadows grew long and dark, hinting at the coming blue hour, which foretold the blackness of the long night. "I can't wait much longer." I didn't like to travel by foot when the sun had set.
I'd been there a few hours, alone. Sitting dutifully near the sign post, as the old woman advised. "The grain man will come," she said when I paid her for my room. "Just wait at the crossroads. He doesn't like to ride north alone, especially at night. He'll be happy for the company. But you try and steal from him and he'll slit your throat. He looks easy but he isn't.
