1. Miscellaneous vs Other

Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories.  While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other".  The reason for this change is simple.  The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree.  We're also working on updating the categories with better and more concise descriptions.

2. Attacking the Artist

I seem to go over this particular point in various ways many times over and it's very likely the people needing to be reading this response, aren't the ones reading this newsletter regularly. However, let it not be said that I don't respond.  Daily deviation selections are done by a group of people I have selected. Some are volunteers and some are paid staff and they were selected by me because I trust their opinions and value their eye and I regard them as community leaders. However, they are human and sometimes mistakes are made. We routinely use image comparison tools to avoid copyright issues but even that isn't fool proof and when a stolen image is discovered it's dealt with almost immediately. The truth of the matter is, you will not love every Daily Deviation selected. However, instantly flaming the artist or the selector has got to be one of the most confusing and frustrating practices I'm witness to on deviantART.

A similar situation seems to occur with contest & challenge semi-finalist and winners announcements. A grave misconception is that all contests are judged by the same people.  Allow me to clear up that myth.  Each contest is assigned a panel of judges whose expertise fit with the nature of the contest or challenge.

While, I appreciate your passion in communicating your disagreement with anything to do with the site, flaming an artist on their deviation is both rude and misplaced anger. In both situations, the artist has no control over their image being selected and it's demoralizing to have your piece ripped to shreds because a third-party decided to put you in the spotlight. Receiving a Daily Deviation or winning a contest can be both a blessing and a curse for the artist and that's unfortunate.

Should you feel the need to share your discontent in regards to DD selections or Contest/Challenge winners, please feel free to communicate it with me.  On occasion, the community has alerted me to non-qualifying selections and we've rectified the situation and I've also had great conversations with people.  I am not inviting you to swear profusely in my general direction, however, if you're choosing to spew venom at the artist or at me, please email it to me and leave the artist alone.

I love the community at deviantART and I've been a part of it for many years. I've felt the outpouring of support and encouragement over those years and I don't believe that the "bullies" speak for the majority.  Unfortunately, they do mar the general awesomeness that is our community and it's time to really sit and think about how we communicate and interact with each other in our virtual world.  It's very easy to forget there are people at the end of the screen and it's super easy to unleash the beast within, without immediately feeling or seeing the ramifications of hurt feelings or anger you've incited in someone else, as a result.

Last Friday we celebrated Spirit Day and we dressed up in purple and roared against bullying but now we have to put that into practice and it starts with every single one of us.  Bullying starts and ends with us.  So, let's try and treat people kinder, let's take a minute before responding with vile words and attacks because our feelings are hurt and try to break this cycle.  If you are a victim of bullying at deviantART or see someone who seems to be bullying someone else, feel free to note or email me about it. I'm happy to help you use the tools available to stop the cycle and enjoy deviantART the way it should be enjoyed.

Pass it along.

Daily Deviations Update

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 13, 2012, 7:55 AM

Happy Monday Morning

I started this morning by signing something "Moonbam13" so either this typo means I need more coffee, or this week is going to be BAMTASTIC!

I'm rooting for the latter ;)

I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations.  It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines.  This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated :)

The following guideline changes are in effect:

:bulletred: The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)

:bulletred:  Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.

It is the hope that these changes, along with internal changes, will help to ensure that the selections will better reflect the variety and talent that can be found in our community.

Your feedback and suggestions are always welcome, so feel free in the comments below or shoot me a note :)

Thank you!

Publish a Journal to Multiple Places!

Mon Dec 12, 2011, 3:10 PM

New! Post to multiple places!

Since the release of and Writer, there's been one feature in particular that we've been itching to release, and we're happy to announce that it's ready! Writer now allows for publication to multiple outlets, including your Gallery, Journal, or Group Journals.

How does it work?

1. Head to Writer and begin writing your entry.

2. Choose a skin for your Group from the right hand panel.

Screen shot 2011-12-05 at 8.28.50 PM by Ayame-Kenoshi

3. When you're ready to publish, choose any combination of your Journal, the Journal Portal (browseable by all deviants), and your Groups of which you are in an administrative class.

These options are perfect for those who may want to post the same message to their personal Journal and one or more of their Groups.

:megaphone: Keep in mind!

Submitters, be sure that you have the appropriate privileges to post Journals and/or deviations to the Group.

Group leaders, be sure to check the Group messages of your message center to approve any pending entries.

If your entry is submitted to more than one Group, only you will be able to edit it.

When submitting to a Group, you must also submit to your personal Journal.

And this isn't just for Journals. You can submit a literature piece or image to your personal Gallery and Group Gallery simultaneously!

What about skins?

For the first time ever, a skinned entry can be added to a Group without having Super Group status. How, you ask? Read on! :eager:

Whereas before you needed a Super Group to utilize skinning options, this ability has now been granted to Premium Members

So, when a Premium Member submits a Journal to a Group using Writer, they'll be able to publish with a skin, even if they are posting to a basic Group. Please note that this option is only available by using Writer.

Group administrators, we encourage you to fire up your recruiting engines, and be on the lookout for new members, especially Premium Members. :la:

Try it out!

These features, previously not possible, we hope will make life easier for deviants.  As always, we want your feedback!  Try it out, and let us know what you think.  As you saw in our #hq Journal, we're reading, listening, and taking all bugs and suggestions to our Product team.  With your feedback, we can make this product even better!

Please take a minute and consider faving this journal as well as commenting on it with any suggestions you might have! This will help us improve and be found by more deviants!

During posting, we found that we exceeded the maximum length for the Journals. Because of that we have been forced to split the blog into 5 parts (yes really). In order for us to become noticed, please ONLY fave and comment on this journal. Navigation for the next article is on the bottom of this page.

Deviant of the Month

We at DevNews choose 1 deviant from the community. This deviant just has to be an outstanding deviant in the community, someone who cares about others and the community! Someone we identify as a leader in the community. This deviant can be anyone, anywhere on dA.

This month, we would like to award it to someone we believe is an outstanding deviant in the community!

iLantiis is well known around the community for her hard work in deviantHEART and her most recent project, the dAWishingWell, which aims at granting wishes of deviants around the world. Congratulations!

2 Amazing Community Projects

We wanted to take a moment and support two amazing community projects. All the details are in the news articles!
100 Premium Memberships; 63,600 points!I am looking to collect 63,600 points by 25 December 2012!
I am raising 63,600 points to give 100 3-month premium memberships on Christmas Day of 2012, to give a little something back to deviants who give a lot to the community. I cannot do this alone.
How do you donate?
To donate to this cause, go to winehaus's page and click "Donate" on the donation pool, or go to the "Give" drop-down menu at the top-right of the page and select "Give Points." No matter which way you give, I still get them! :happybounce:
How else can you help besides donating?
To further help the cause, please favourite this news article and feature it in your next journal, poll, and send it to your friends! It will really mean a lot to the future recipients and myself. It doesn't matter how many watchers you have, but I need your help for this to be known to everyone site-wide!
You can also show your support with this stamp!

UPDATES CONT. - Warm Winter Project: 2012UPDATE 9 - As of Sunday, November 25, 2012, I WAS ABLE TO MEET AND PURCHASE MY DONATION GOAL OF 50 HOODIES thanks to deviantART's 30% off Black Friday sale as well as my 10% Premium Member Discount. Congratulations to us and thank you to everyone who helped out!
UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in

Both winehaus and ToxicAlice92 are amazing deviants doing amazing projects. Please take a look!

  • For artists, what type of prices do you normally charge?
  • How do you prefer to pay or receive payments?
  • How many commission "slots" do you typically have open at a time?

Site Update: Message Center Journals

Fri Mar 30, 2012, 1:14 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Browse Through Journals in Your Message Center
When browsing through deviations in your Message Center, you can use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to flip through artwork and use the "Remove From Messages" button to remove each of those deviations. Many people have been requesting that this feature be extended to Journals as well. We're happy to tell you that we just added this functionality!

Pages on the "Journal History" Widget
Many members have requested that "Next" and "Previous" buttons be added to the "Journal History" widget to allow you to browse through more than just the most recent Journals. This feature is now available to all members and Groups. To install this widget on your Profile, Journal, or Group, click the "Edit Page" button on one of those pages and install the "Journal History" widget.

Age, Sex, and Location Removed From Comment Business Cards
Last week, we launched Comment Business Cards -- which display a deviant's age, sex, location, artist type, and new member status next to comments.  After reviewing your helpful feedback and going through thousands of comments, journals, and forum posts, we've collected your responses.

Even though we were only displaying information that members had made public on their profiles, some people had concerns about displaying it next to all of their comments. Some had issues with privacy while others had concerns about being stereotyped or prejudged based on their age, sex, and location. We understand your concerns and in response, we've removed age, sex, and location from the Comment Business Cards. We believe that these changes will make the feature more useful to everyone.

Updates to the Preview of New Thumbnails
Last week, we shared a preview of deviantART's new thumbnails. We appreciate the feedback everyone gave about the way the artwork was presented. To make the new browsing experience more tidy, we're testing left alignment of the thumbnails. We believe that the new thumbnails are a better way to present the artwork within the browsing experience.

New Ways to Receive Prints Profits!
For years, deviantART has been helping artists sell their art through our Prints program. Because the process of receiving payments from your art sales has been less than ideal, we've worked hard on a new earnings system. We've heard your feedback and suggestions, and want to give you a preview of three ways you will be able to receive profits from the Prints that you've sold.

Bug Fixes

  • Thanks to community reports, we were able to hone in on a few advertisers that were running auto-play audio ads on deviantART. We're confident we've addressed the immediate issue, but we're taking additional actions with all of our advertising partners to make sure the culprits don't sneak onto our pages via different channels or partners. If you use Firefox and would like to help report bad ads, try installing our Bad Ad Report Tool.
  • The "drag and collect" notice briefly stopped showing above the thumbs on the front page. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Changed file type restrictions in the X11 mouse cursors category and other appropriate Linux/UNIX categories to accept .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 files. Fixed by drommk
  • The confirmation message for the "remove all comments" message in the Message Center was unintuitive and confusing. Fixed by muteor
  • When a member used the "Way Back" search for the first time, it defaulted to 1969, the year when dA had no submissions. Fixed by drommk
  • When using the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to browse deviations, there were some bugs when a deleted deviation was encountered. Fixed by muteor
  • Emails that end with "+something" or periods placed in the address were not treated as duplicates allowing deviants (and mostly spammers) to create a large number accounts with what is the same email address. Those are aliases, and should be stripped for dupe detection. Fixed by muteor
  • For a brief time, removing a group favorite actually added the deviation to your personal favorites. Fixed by shadowhand
  • Some thumbnails were slightly clipped by the right side browser border in browse mode. Fixed by drommk
  • The "full view" size menu disappeared from for a period of time. Fixed by adahacker
  • Hovercards could stay stuck while renaming a stack. Fixed by samshull
  • The hovercard at the very bottom of the page could get cut off. Fixed by samshull
  • Hid the "http://" from the share links for more compact display. Implemented by samshull
  • Older skins no longer interfere with the new version of Writer. Fixed by inazar
  • After clicking the Writer toolbar, you would have to click back in the Writer document before continuing to type. Fixed by inazar
  • No more empty space on the bottom of the Writer page. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback
  • List the date the deviation was last edited on deviation pages. *TheSaltyMonster in the Suggestions Forum
  • You receive a notification when someone comments on your artwork or journals, but when people reply to that comment, you do not receive an additional notification. All comments should send notifications. From *DestinyBlue in the Suggestions Forum
  • =BlissfullySarcastic put together a list of suggestions, which includes customizations to the "custom" widget, several browsing suggestions, and a "watching" widget.
  •  =katara-alchemist, who has been a huge help in contributing to the Site Update articles, suggested Writer improvements for literature including the ability to add chapters and modify the visual design of your workspace. She put together this awesome mockup:

Last Week's Discussion
Last week, we received some valuable feedback from the community about the idea of showing related artwork on deviation pages. People were excited about the idea of artwork discovery and the exposure it could give artists. Some members brought up concerns about their artwork being the focus of the page. Artists agreed that if this feature was added, it should be presented in a way that does not clutter the page. There were also some concerns with the actual artwork that would be shown, including artwork that was "too popular," unrefined, or contained mature content.
