CHAPTER 19: BREAKFAST
Garrus let out a low growl of frustration as his hand slid down and away from the door. He turned to call the elevator and as the doors slid open he mentally went over what he planned for the day: breakfast with Solana, talk to Chakwas and maybe, if he was lucky, he could nail a few minutes with Anderson. He stepped off the elevator and turned toward the direction of the Crew's Quarters. He had a few minutes before he had to get ready to meet Solana and, knowing her, she would probably be late anyway. The doors slid open and his Turian nose immediately picked up the scent of booze, sweat and the stench of vomit. Apparently, the rest of the crew had continued the party after coming

"I'm proud of you kid," said Anderson.
"Just remember you were a human before you were a Spectre, you represent all of humanity with your actions," said Udina.
"I won't let you down," said Shepard confidently.
Anderson stepping down and giving Shepard the Normandy? It didn't feel right to her. Pushing papers wasn't his thing but he wanted to give her every chance to succeed in this mission. She knew how much this meant to him and she wasn't going to let

Still sat on the briefing room floor, Shepard reasoned that she would have to leave at some point. Unfortunately. She had gotten quite comfortable. And may have fallen asleep for a few moments.
Ah well, she thought, I guess I'll go get ready then. She had mixed feelings. On the one hand, she didn't want to see Thane, let alone spend time pretending to be his girlfriend. Not right now, it was too embarrassing. She didn't want to make a fool of herself. But, on the other hand, she couldn't wait. Hell, if she couldn't be his real girlfriend, why not just enjoy playing pretend?
But what should I wear? She thought as she dawdled towards the lift. What do clubbers wear? Could I get away with combat boots? Probably not.
I have nothing sexy. Should I be considering something sexy? As she trudged out of the lift, into her cabin, she was surprised to see Tali and Kasumi were already there, and her bed was covered in clothes.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I thought I was in my quarters," Shepard said

Chapter 21: LETTER
Sera walked through the airlock and glanced at Joker who had his head resting heavily in his hand, looking as miserable as ever. EDI was sitting calmly in the co-pilot’s seat, methodically analyzing the ship’s systems. It was apparent he hadn’t noticed her arrival and an irresistibly mischievous thought curled her lips into a sly grin. Treading carefully toward the cockpit, taking care not to make any obvious noise, Sera came up behind Joker and stifled a laugh when she heard him snore lightly. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw EDI turn and open her mouth to speak. She put a finger to her lips, signaling the AI to hold off on what was undoubtedly a report of one kind or another. EDI blinked in reply, confused by her commanding officer’s sudden gesture.
Leaning up against the console, Sera folded her arms across

Shepard sighed heavily as every step she took felt harder to make. She trudged through the base; intent on saying her goodbyes to her beloved crew. She walked around in a daze, looking at the destruction of the base area alone, until her eyes fell upon a familiar face.
"Hey Commander," Vega solemnly said as Shepard approached him.
"What? No Lola?" she teased with the biggest smile she could muster.
"Huh?…Yeah, sorry," he replied as he looked down at the ground.
"Are you okay?"
"I don't know what I thought I'd feel coming back to Earth," Vega said, "I was ready to fight - ready to die if I had to. But seeing everything like this…"
Shepard swallowed down her own concerns and fears as she braced Vega's arm; knowing that his resolve needed to be strengthened in that moment.
"I know it's hard, but this is only temporary," she said as she locked eyes with him. "We will win this. So stay focused and don't let them shake your resolve."

The doors of Liara's office slid open again.
Still in her chair facing the console, Liara sighed, "Sera, I ."
He cleared his throat, not wanting her to say anything further, making sure she knew it wasn't Shepard.
Liara gasped, quickly turning around in her chair. "Garrus! I I'm sorry. I thought "
"Yes, I know what you thought Liara," he said roughly as he slowly settled into the chair that just held Shepard.
"What can I do for you Garrus?" she said pleasantly.
He wasn't exactly sure what he wanted from Liara but he knew he wanted answers. Shepard hurrying so quickly from Liara's office alarmed him. He felt he no longer had the right to ask what was wrong. Ever since their meeting on Menae he so desperately wanted to talk to Shepard hear her voice again anything. It was impossible because she had conveniently made herself busy and was never alone, surrounding herself with people. When he thought he finally had the opportunity, she was a

Shepard eased her body into the leather chair in front of her desk, trying to make as little noise as possible in her silent quarters. She didn't have the heart to wake the Turian slumbering under the covers of her bed. Just because she couldn't sleep didn't mean he had to be disturbed. They had gotten together for the past few nights in a row now. A small smile formed on her face as she recalled how Garrus had embraced her tightly after the elimination of the Collector base. She had nearly fallen to her death at that base, but he had saved her life by pulling her up into the Normandy at the last minute. The Commander shook her head to get her thoughts away from the feeling she had had at that t

In another life, things would be different.
In another life, there would be no more war; only peace. There wouldn’t be any more heartache; only love and happiness…..There wouldn’t be any more death; just the feeling of you in my arms again. In another life, you’d still be here with me, alive, well, and looking up at me with a smile so bright that it could outshine any sun.
I’d give anything-my heart and soul, everything I am and would ever be-just to have the smallest of chances at another life with you in it.

Sera awoke to the sound of the incessant beeping of her omni-tool.
The beeping reverberated inside her head, pulsating out a rhythm of pain. Laying there in the middle of the bed for a moment, she willed it to stop, absently muting the offending noise. A light snuffling sound from the couch caught her attention but she didn't want to move to find its source. She pinched the bridge of her nose, closing her eyes, trying to breathe through the pain in her head. Only when the pain had sufficiently subsided did she dare to open her eyes and click on her omni-tool. A message from her mother blinked at her.
Rise and shine daughter! See you in an hour!
Sera groaned in protest as she remembered agreeing to breakfast with her mother and Anderson the night before. That was before her mother ambushed her. Suddenly, the memories from the night before sporadically started to fill her brain.
The thought bolted her upright

I loved you.
Thats what he had said.
Kaidan walked slowly down an alley of the Wards back on the Citadel, stopping in front an apartment door. Bringing his hand over the keypad, he typed in a key code.
I loved you.
Thats what he had said to the woman he had been waiting 2 years to see again.
The door opened and Kaidan walked inside, grateful to finally be alone. Throwing his baggage on the floor, he walked over to a desk pulling out it's chair, and sat down.
I loved you.
At first Kaidan didn't know what to think or feel. Happiness? Relief? Anger? Betrayed? To be honest, he still wasn't sure. The moment he seen Shepard back on Horizon, he felt his heart swell with happiness. Happiness, to know his lover was alive... Shepard was alive!
He felt relieved to see she hadn't changed. She was still beautiful... her firey red hair resting against the strong yet feminine features of her face. And those eyes... big, gorgeous, green eyes that made Kaidan feel weak at

Shepard was speechless. The room was deathly silent. Anderson got up and walked over to the glass case behind his enormous desk. He selected a bottle from the third shelf and two glasses. Setting them on the desk, he carefully poured the amber liquid into each of them. He picked up the glasses and walked back over to her. He offered her a glass as he sat down in the chair across from her. She gratefully accepted it, taking a generous mouthful before setting it on the table. The liquid was rich and warm, burning a trail down her throat.
"I'm sorry, Shepard," he offered weakly, studying his glass. "She blindsided me. I had no idea why she came to see me and then she dropped that bomb right before you walked in. What right did she have to use that?! I swear Shepard, if I had known that there was a leak from the inside, I would never have put you there ."
"I know," she reassured him. "What do you think we should do?"
"Well " he started slowly, thinking " it

There seemed to be increased activity in the chamber outside his room, Thane thought. People came and went a lot more frequently than had been usual in the time he had been here, and none of them stopped, as was part of their routine, too, at the diagnostics' consoles that stood just outside the cubicle of reinforced glass he was contained in.
Something must be going on, the assassin thought; he wondered if it was something he might be able to use to get out of this place.
A couple of armed men swept past the room, disappearing through the far door and into the tunnel beyond at some point. Heavily armed men, Cerberus insignia on their equipment. Thane frowned briefly. Cerberus. Of course.
It made even less sense, though, he mused; Cerberus had been, in part, the reason he had died in the first place. Why would they bring him back from the dead, let alone cure him?
The answer was even more obvious than the question. Shepard. It all had to come back to her. The Illusive Man wanted to get

Silence .well, not perfect silence but a familiar and comforting one nonetheless. The hum of the ship and its crew going about their daily activities was something Shepard had come to find a certain peace in. The Alliance had given her a sense of belonging and the people she met and served with gave her a sense of family. Following in her parents footsteps gave her a sense of purpose. She never expected to come as far as she had. Still, it made her sad to know that her father would never know or see what his daughter had accomplished. Standing in the cockpit with Joker looking out the window, watching the stars streak by in the vast expanse of space, she was lost in thought
"Commander? ....Joker to Shepard .Hello?"
" ..what?" she absently answered still staring out the window.
"Oh nothing, you know, just trying to fly the ship here. Waiting for your orders while the Reapers hunt our ass and Cerberus gets away the usual."

Garrus left Liara's office more frustrated than when he went in. He understood her predicament but that didn't mean that he had to like it far from it but there was nothing he could do about it either. He had kept his word to Shepard and never told a soul about their time together, so he couldn't very well start now.
Shit. Now what?
He could feel the tension throbbing within him. He needed to do something to get rid of it or ..not good. He headed toward the elevator. Perhaps some sim sparring would help. It had before and it had been a while since he had done any no need to really, war was a perfect substitute.
In the docking bay, Vega had set up a corner for just such a purpose. He had even hung up his old punching bag from home. As Garrus got off the elevator he could hear Vega grunting as the rattling chains that held the bag echo throughout the bay.
He rounded the corner. "Vega!"
"Hey, Scars!" Vega huffed out.

The elevator came to a halt at the Embassy level and opened its doors. Shepard stepped out and headed toward Anderson's office. Her omni-tool blinked and she pulled up the messages one from Gardner with all of the items he needed for the ship, one from Traynor with the location of the florist, one from Dr. Chakwas with the manifest of medical supplies to trade with Tactus and one from her mother. She opened the last one:
I just arrived and got your message from Specialist Traynor. I'll see you in a little while for dinner.
She sighed heavily as she stood in front of Anderson's office door.
Hopefully this doesn't take long.
She pressed the keypad and the doors slid open. Anderson's personal assistant looked up from behind his desk.
"Ah! Commander Shepard! Councilor Anderson is expecting you. Please go on in," he said as he opened the doors to the inner office.

Shepard rounded the corner and headed towards Liara's office, carefully avoiding the Main Battery. She wasn't in the mood to have that inevitable conversation. She picked up her pace a little bit praying the Battery doors didn't open. They didn't. She breathed an audible sigh of relief as she walked through Liara's door and felt the doors quickly slide shut behind her.
"Shepard you can't avoid him forever you know." Liara said without looking up from her terminal.
Crap. How did she know? Was it that obvious?
"What are you talking about Liara?" she asked, trying to pawn off the best nonchalant voice she could muster.
Liara leaned back in her chair turning around to give her dear friend a knowing look.
"What?" Shepard said again; palms up in feigned innocence.
"Don't give me 'what?' You know very well what I'm talking about."
Shepard sank into a nearby chair and leaned back closing her eyes. Liara was the only one who knew what happened between

Liara glanced to Kolyat with a sigh; the younger drell was busy across the small room, typing into the keyboard of the computer hub that served as pretty much the only piece of equipment inside the otherwise bare chamber.
The asari noticed his hands were shaking, though his expression was grim and almost completely still, revealing nothing of his all too clear distress.
"How are you getting along?" she asked casually.
"Almost hacked in; their encryption is ridiculous and there aren't as many cameras as one would expect a place like this would have," he replied a bit tersely.
"Kolyat take a moment, if you need it," Liara said calmly, hoping not to sound too patronizing.
The young drell stopped with his work, turning to shoot her a dark look. "I can't; my father might be somewhere down there. We need to breach these bastards' network so we can look for him; Shepard might need the help too," he groaned, the last words clearly an afterthought-or an attempt to get her to back off,

"I do not like this place," Javik remarked grimly, pausing, along with Garrus on a small ridge overlooking the mining settlement that was their destination. Both of them took care to keep behind some rocky outcrops that lined the cliffside, keeping out of sight, without either of them mentioning it; they were both soldiers, after all, trained in battle and both their instincts said the same things when it came to staying alive.
"Yes, me neither," Garrus huffed back, leaning out of their makeshift cover to look ahead through the scope of his sniper rifle. The settlement seemed awfully quiet, and he could see no sign of any movement at all, which did very little to reassure him. "There could be a whole army down there, hiding out, waiting for us to walk right into them".
"Small problem, that," Javik shrugged back, motioning towards a small, almost invisible path that seemed to lead downwards and into the neatly arranged group of containers that formed the settlement

"Save your lives?"Shepard asked carefully, raising a puzzled eyebrow.
The blonde sitting comfortably across from her nodded, seemingly indifferently tucking a lock of her long hair behind her ear. "You are in the business of saving people, Commander; not asking you to do something all that extraordinary".
Shepard scoffed. "I am really in no mood for games and with every passing moment, what patience I have mustered is dissipating rapidly," she said sharply, stealing a glance towards the new dark monitors across the room. Seeing Thane had cracked her wall of strict self control, not to mention her determination to keep a cool head in this, she was well aware. She was just about to tell this Elena person to get on with it and name her terms; only she knew that sort of reaction would put her directly in the Cerberus' operative's power and she knew she couldn't afford that.
She forced herself to draw in a deep breath, acutely aware of Elena watching her

Commander Shepard glanced back to the now shut door behind her, not without some apprehension, though she made sure it wasn't visible. The man who had negotiated with her stood by her side, giving her an encouraging, if shifty smile, his comrades moving away to remove their helmets and their weapons as well.
Shepard noticed the neat weapon racks lining the small antechamber that stood just past the entrance to the mining complex; the men seemed to arrange their gear with practiced ease, she thought, which was probably the case. Her escort joined them briefly, setting his own helmet and rifle in one of the spaces before returning to her.
He was older than she had thought, a stately-looking man with a bit of gray in his temples. His expression was grim, though not unfriendly and he had not stopped watching her for a single moment, through knowing, steel-gray eyes that seemed to peer into her soul.
He reminded her a bit of Admiral Anderson, she thought vaguely; the same portly demeanour,
Two Turians and a KeeperGarrus and Chellick were busy reviewing footage at their desks into the late hours of the evening. They were working on a case together involving suspicious cargo that was being run through the Citadel. All ships docking were legitimate which meant that when they finally pinpointed the ship, either the entire crew was "dirty" or they had an extremely shady crew member that was very good at hiding his illegal activities. In any case, they had to pinpoint what ship, or ships, the cargo was coming from and this was proving to be quite the task. They reviewed hundreds of tapes from the course of a few months, watching every ship dock, watching every crate that exited, checking the docking records to make sure everything matched up. So far, they had turned up nothing. Two Turians and a Keeper3 years ago in Short Stories More Like This

It took longer than it should have for Garrus and Javik, now accompanied by Kasumi and the two drell, to rendezvous with Liara and Vega, though they all felt they had very little time to spare at the moment.
As it were, the latter group was the first to arrive, since the meeting point was practically right by the spot they had been taking cover in to begin with. Both of them raised their weapons at the dry, muffled sound of footprints in the sand nearby, rolling their eyes at each other, as well as the larger party that joined them a few moments later.
Feron smiled suavely to Liara, noticing her frowning at him. "You're going to tell me off for this one later on, aren't you?" he asked airily.
Liara snorted. "Yes. You're supposed to keep me in the loop, not go off gallivanting on your own like this," the asari replied smoothly, though there was more relief than ire in her voice.
"Well, chew him out later, if you want to," Garrus intervened coolly, having moved to examine the somewhat ba
