My Thoughts on Queen ChrysalisAnd now we come to the last of my character discussions with the Queen of the changelings, Chrysalis. My Thoughts on Queen Chrysalis3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Right from the start I feel that I should say that this character was effective in her reveal because I honestly wasn't expecting this character to be who she ultimately turned out to be. When I first heard that the plot of "A Canterlot Wedding" was going to involve Princess Cadence in some way having "a dark secret", what I imagined happening was that she was going to turn out to be some sort of villain with a typical villainous plan. And at first that was exactly what I was seeing, Cadence doing evil things and then declaring that she does indeed have some plan in mind.
So at this point the story was going exactly as I predicted. But then part two pulled the rug right from under me by revealing the real Princess Cadence in the caves with Twilight. I was genuinely shocked. I had not thought of the possibility that the Cadence I'd been watching was some sort of impostor. And so, when C

A certain pegasus flew back into Ponyville to find the entire town completely deserted. She flew all around, obviously checking the homes of her friends. Twilight’s Golden Oaks Library was all books and no ponies, every dessert in Sugarcube Corner was left untouched by Pinkie Pie, Sweet Apple Acres had no work of Applejack’s done, the Carousel Boutique had no Rarity for all those dresses, and Fluttershy’s cottage didn’t have a single living thing even living there.
Once Rainbow Dash checked everywhere else, she did find one caped figure standing in front of the town square. Next to the figure was a life sized statue of Rainbow Dash, but it was wearing a helmet, a red cape with a golden zipper, red strap on and a cloud making a yellow lightning bolt on it, and four golden gauntlets with tiny white wings for each hoof of the statue. The helmet and gauntlets were rainbow colored and had golden coverings to assure they were made of metal.
Once she flew close enough,

#91) Me and my boyfriend have been bronies from the beginning and we've been thinking about having a kid. We heard somewhere that they can inject animal DNA into the womb in the first few weeks to give the child animal-like features. We think this would be the coolest thing ever but we fear others will frown on it and our beautiful pony child will be looked down upon. What advice do you have for me?
Answer: I think your sources are quite credible. You can, indeed, inject animal DNA into the womb to create animal-human hybrids. That's why you quite often see dog-boys, cat-girls and giraffe-children walking around town centres. It's becoming more acceptable nowadays, but you might want to give it a few more years before you try it out, just to avoid the beast-baby facing ridicule at school. They may have an elephant-teacher, which would help the child feel more 'normal', but if all the class-mates are human, or another form of animal hybrid, it could be difficult for them

As the Wheel Turns
Snips and Snails were dripping sweat as they struggled to drag along the heavy wooden cart that dug into the ground. The cart plowed up the dirt and left a sizable trench in its wake. They looked at one another, tired and worn out from pulling the new tyrant of ponyville to the edge of the forcefield. They stopped for a moment to take a quick break. As soon as they had stopped, a glowing red whip snapped at their backsides from mid-air.
"Pull you fools!" the whip snapped it at them twice more. "Somepony set off the magic forcefield and Trixie intends to punish them!" shouted Trixie as she prepared to whip her subjects once more for good measure. She did not have to go through with the final whip, as the two simpletons had begun to move twice as fast as they previously were. Snips craned his head back towards the unrelenting whip wielder.
"But wouldn't it be faster if we had some wheels?" he asked nervously, his voice higher than usual.
Trixie's head snapped up and he
MLP - The Crystal Empire - ReviewWell, here we are. It's been a long wait but we're finally here at season three. Let's hope the series manages to stay as entertaining as it's been so far.MLP - The Crystal Empire - Review2 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
As usual, this review will contain spoilers for the episode. If you have not seen this episode yet, you have been warned.
Our episode begins in the city of Canterlot, where we see Princess Celestia singing some documents in her throne room. A guard bursts in to inform her that "it" has returned. Shocked by this news, she orders for Princess Cadence and Shining Armour to be brought to her. She begins writing a letter to Twilight and we cut to the opening credits.
After the credits finish we see Twilight in her home preparing for some test that Celestia has set for her. She's clearly stressed about it and despite efforts from her friends, she continues to be tense. Back at Canterlot, Princess Celestia is discussing matters with her sister, Luna, before Twilight arrives. As Luna departs, Celestia informs Twilight that the test she'll b
My Thoughts on Cheerilee and StudentsAnd now we come to Miss Cherrilee and the students of Ponyville Elementary. And the first thing I want to discuss with regards to these characters is whether or not they are the only ones in that particular school. Cheerilee is the only teacher we seen in all of Ponyville and the class of the CMC are the only students we see. Does that entire school consist of only a handful of students and one teacher? It would not be an unusual thing exactly as small towns and villages would probably have a small school to go with it. I myself live very near to one such school. But like with many of the things in this show, its something that requires clarification. My Thoughts on Cheerilee and Students3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
So as for Cheerilee herself, my initial impressions was that she was going to be an "exposition character". When we're first introduced to her in "Call of the Cutie" her role was basically to be a source of information regarding the concept of cutie marks. She was educating her students, and thus the audience, about this concept that's so

So the episode starts with Twilight leaving her home and going around town, singing the episode's first song about how great the day is, only to be interrupted by a splash of water. At first she thinks it's Rainbow Dash messing with the weather, but is shocked to find that it was actually Rarity, who is doing Rainbow's job, and even more surprisingly, has the latter's cutie mark, leading into the show's opening titles.
After the title sequence, Twilight asks Rarity why she's changing the weather and has Rainbow's mark, only to be told that Rarity thinks she's always had that mark and duty. Twilight finds Spike and brings him to Fluttershy's cottage and explains what she saw. There, they find that Rainbow Dash has taken up residence there and, despite not being very good at it, is trying to control Fluttershy's

Best Friends Forever? (2 Part Episode)
Twilight is chosen for a once in a lifetime experience; she can go out and study abroad across Equestria, but must past a test first. On the day of the test, Twilight accidentally does a time travel spell that sends her into the future and sees Ponyville has taken a turn for the worse. While there, she finds her friends who have become bitter and cruel and to make things worse, Discord has returned and taken over. Can Twilight find a way back to the past and save the future?

My thoughts on TrixieWell, it's been a while since I've done one of these. I've been going back and forth with myself over whether or not to go back to doing these, especially with regard to doing it for this character, but after the last episode I feel that it's time Trixie got her own "My thoughts on" essay. Now please bear in mind that many of the things I'll be saying on her here will ber very similar to what I said abouth er in my previous essay on minor antagonists, as well as my review for the recent "Magic duel" episode. So if you read something here I've talked about before, I apologise in advance. My thoughts on Trixie2 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
So then, Trixie. The so-called "great and powerful" Trixie, the unicorn who made her debut in "Boast Busters". What strikes me most about Trixie as an antagonist is that, despite clearly opposing the main cast in some way, she never really did anything that bad in her initial episode. True, she boasted the hell out of her abilities at the time, but she wasn't responsible for anything really bad that hap
My Thoughts on Rainbow DashMuch like with Pinkie Pie and Rarity, my opinion on Rainbow Dash, at least during the early episodes, was influenced by my initial exposure to her. When she frist came on screen I gained an opinion of her as being "the token tomboy", which was something which bothered me at first as we already seemed to have a character to fit that role with Applejack. So when Rainbow showed up my first reaction was, "don't we have one of these already?"My Thoughts on Rainbow Dash3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
But much like the others my perception of her changed greatly overtime. This was not just a typical tomboy character. There were many aspects of her that broke out of that mould. Though unlike the others, the degree to which she broke out of her stereotype seemed less obvious.
Not only that, but much like Rarity and Pinkie Pie, I didn't really like her that much when I first started watching the show. However, unlike those other two, and I know this is going to earn me many MANY haters, I haven't grown to like Rainbow as much as I have with the others.

The premise of this episode is that Rainbow Dash uses unconventional methods to try and prepare herself to join the Wonderbolts reserves.
As you can tell from that initial premise, this is a Rainbow Dash focus episode, and that's something I think was needed because, as those who read my reviews will attest to, I was not a big fan of her last outing back in "Rainbow Falls". In addition to that, this episode addresses something that myself and other fans have been wondering for some time, that being Rainbow's current standing with the Wonderbolts. Ever since her last episode, it's been very unclear whether she's still attempting to become a part of their group, so on that note, I'm glad we got an episode to show us that this is still something she's working towards.
The story at it's most basic level is one that's been done before, that of a character doing unusual things to try and compete in some way. I'
My thoughts on the MLP season 4 animaticsFor those of you who do not know, we were recently gifted with some footage of animatics, unfinished animation, of some of the episodes we can hope to see in the upcoming fourth season of MLP. As expected, I'm very excited about this as it gave us a taste of what's to come. But it also got me thinking a great deal about what we were shown. As such I'm here to give you my thoughts and predictions about what I saw and what I think this means for the show.My thoughts on the MLP season 4 animatics2 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
As you can probably guess, this will contain spoilers. You have been warned.
The first clip we were given was for an episode seemingly centred around the Equestria Games, referenced during one of the last episodes of the previous season. The clip shows the CMC being harassed by Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon as usual, but what got to me in this one was that they were picking on Scootaloo specifically because of her apparent inability to fly, and that this may harm her chances of being involved in the games. This strikes me as astounding

So our episode begins with Applejack and Granny Smith talking about how much they're looking forward to the reunion, they ask Applebloom how many are coming. When she tells them that virtually all of their relatives say they will be arriving, it comes as a shock, leading into the title credits.
After the opening sequence we find that the four Apples are still looking over the sheer number of RSVP's that have arrived. Applejack offers to handle the arrangements rather than Granny Smith this year, which she accepts. When Applejack asks what's needed, Granny Smith shows them a photo album of past reunions to show them what kinds of things they got up to. After this, Applejack starts to become focused on getting the various items past reunions were lacking. The more Granny reminisces, the more Applejack adds to her list, much to her chagrin.
Understanding how important it is
My Thoughts on Big Mac and Granny SmithAs I've mentioned in other writing, it seems that the subject of family is one very close to the hearts of the show's writers. As such the families of our main characters, at least their siblings, make frequent appearances. While they may not have as much of an impact on the show, it's clear that they're still important to our characters. I also said that out of all of the main cast, Applejack seems to focus the most on the importance of family. Because of this, we will now be looking at the members o her family that I have yet to speak about, her older brother, Big Macintosh, and Granny Smith her grandmother. My Thoughts on Big Mac and Granny Smith3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
For a very long time, both of these characters seemed to me to be yet another pair of ponies that would show up in the background from time to time and yet contribute nothing to either the characters or the story. But, as time went on they started to grow new dimensions and show a level of depth that I hadn't seen coming. Whilst I can't say that their development has been as deep
My Thoughts on RarityAnd now we come to our resident Fashionista, Rarity. My Thoughts on Rarity3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
As you may remember from my previous entry, Rarity was another character I had issue with when I first started watching the show. However, my reasons for disliking her at the start were very different from the reasons I disliked Pinkie. In fact, looking back on the matter, my reasons for being against her seem almost petty, and something I'm no proud of.
You see, when I first started watching this show, I was assured that it wasn't the stereotypically girly show that it was back in the 80's. That all the tea parties, dresses and makeovers that characterised female-aimed cartoons had been exorcised completely in favour of something more gender-neutral and less likely to alienate one group or the other.
So with that mindset, I started watching. As you can imagine, when I first laid eyes on Rarity, heard her speak, saw what she was about at the start, I felt betrayed. This was exactly the kind of character I'd been told would not be in
My Thoughts on FluttershyAnd here my life really is on the line.My Thoughts on Fluttershy3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Yep, it's time to talk about Fluttershy. And I mean what I said, Fluttershy has, over the course of her time in this show, gained such a devoted following that it's become akin to heresy in this fandom to say anything negative about her. In fact so fierce have fans become in their protectiveness of this character that any characters in the show itself who've said or done anything to upset or harm her in any way have instantly become demonized.
Now, as a confession, I myself have participated in such behaviour myself during my time as a member of this fandom, so I understand completely where people are coming from. When we see Fluttershy, observe her mannerisms, her way of speaking, it creates an immediate impact on us. When we look at her we see a shy, sweet, innocent and vulnerable creature who needs protecting. In many ways it's like some sort of parental instinct, at least how I see it. A need to defend those we feel cannot defend themselves.
Review of MLP: FiM's Crystal EmpireReview of MLP: FiM's Crystal Empire2 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
The big two-parter has arrived! And My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is kicking off with the Crystal Empire two-parter.
The first part is about Celestia giving Twilight the rather monumental test of finding a way to protect the Crystal Empire upon its mysterious return from the shadowy King Sombra (meaning shadow in Spanish).
And the second part is focuses more on Twilight finding the Crystal Heart which is key to stopping Sombra.
This two parter is easily the most visually stunning two-parter yet. Everything from movement to lighting to the absolutely gorgeous looking Crystal Empire is incredibly well-designed.
And surprisingly enough, darker as well. As in, there was more liberal use of black and shadows this time around, giving some pivotal scenes more atmosphere.
This willingness to be 'dark' just means that kids get a more well-rounded entertainment. They're gonna' have to use the potty on their own one day after all.
However, that's also the double-edge sword with Crystal Empi

1 - A Scootaloo episode:
As I said back in my analysis of the CMC, Scootaloo has had the least development out of all of the younger pony characters. And that's a shame because there seems to be plenty that we can do with her. For example, she is a pegasi that cannot fly. That alone could be the basis for a great story. We could have an episode where she feels like an outcast, the only pegasi of her age who is incapable of flight. We could see her trying to cope with it or even have it be something she's ashamed of.
We could even have that be the reason why she has Rainbow Dash be her personal hero. RD is, after all, one of the most accomplished fliers in Ponyville, so it makes sense that Scootaloo, who ca
My Thoughts on SpikeMuch like my chequered history with main characters, I've also had various issues with character belonging to groups other than those targeted as a show's intended audience. By this I mean that if a show is meant to be watched by a certain group of people , and then included a character which does not belong to that specific group, their portrayal has often been hit-and-miss in terms of their quality. My Thoughts on Spike3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Take this show for example. Despite it unexpected male audient it remains at it's heart a show intended to be watched by young girls. As such any male character shown in this series would have always had me worried. Whenever I've glanced at shows meant for this demographic in the past, the portrayal of male character has been either as incompetent and foolish who can't do anything right, or outright brutish in a manner that makes all boys/men out to be bullies.
Even though this is the start of the "supporting characters" analyses I'll be doing, technically Spike the baby dragon is officia

So our episode begins with Scootaloo riding her scooter through the streets of Ponyville. She performs a few stunts and impresses Rainbow Dash before flying headlong into a bunch of hay, leading to the title sequence.
After the opening sequence we find Scootaloo boasting to Applebloom and Sweetie Bell about Rainbow's comments. She say she wants to spend more time with Rainbow, and Applebloom suggest an upcoming camping trip she and her family are going on. After Sweetie Bell convinces Rarity that the two of them should join in, all five head to the woods. Once at the campsite, Rainbow arrives and Scootaloo attempt to impress her, with mixed success.
Once everyone's established their respective tents, Scootaloo fetches some firewood and they get a fire going. Rainbow then begins to tell the group some scary stories. The story scares all three of the CMC, but Scootaloo p
My Thoughts on the Cutie Mark CrusadersI have written a fair deal about these characters whenever I did reviews on episodes that focused on them. Remembering what I wrote about them I find it easy to assume that many will come away from those reviews with the distinct impression that I do not like these characters at all. This is, in fact, a false assumption. I do not dislike or hate the Cutie Mark Crusaders. However, that does not mean that I do not occasionally find things about their characters that bother, because I do. But much like Spike, they've never done anything to make me dread their appearances. My Thoughts on the Cutie Mark Crusaders3 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Which is already a point in their favour I can tell you. Typically, whenever I've been introduced to kid characters in cartoons, especially very young kid characters, they've been incredibly difficult for me to like. So many times in other shows it seems like they've been designed with the express purpose of being "annoying for the sake of it". So at the very least I can say that the CMC have never made me feel this way

The premise of this episode is that Rarity is attempting to gain the attention of a well-known traveller, Trenderhoof, and so tries to act more like Applejack in order to do so.
With that premise, you can probably tell that this is a very heavy Rarity and Applejack episode, and as far as I’m concerned, I couldn’t be happier about that. These two mares have always had great on-screen chemistry together, and the fact that the two are so different in terms of their personalities has always led to some great moments between them. In fact, one of my favourite episodes of the first season, “Look before you sleep”, was one I enjoyed because it did so well in exploring the dynamic between them. As such, this episode is rife with great character moments between the two, which is always a plus.

The premise of this episode is that Fluttershy resorts to extreme measures to support a band named the Ponytones when one of it's members, Big Mac, loses his voice.
As you've probably gathered, this is a Fluttershy focus episode and for that reason it's another that I've very much been looking forward to. Much like Rarity, Fluttershy is a character that, save for one episode, received very little attention during the last season, and even earlier in this season, "during "Bats!" her character had to share the spotlight with Applejack. So having her come back for a full episode of her own was something that appealed to me greatly. Recent episodes always seem to cast her in the light of how she first appeared in the show, the shy and timid pony, which always bugged me given that this was something she was supposed to have grown out of at this point. But even though this episode still falls into that t

The premise of this episode is that Rainbow Dash is torn over which team she should join in the upcoming Equestria Games, the team from Ponyville or the more competitive one from Cloudsdale.
As I've probably made it known on several occasions, Rainbow Dash is not one of those characters I typically look forward to when focused on. That's not to say I dislike her or that I think her episodes are under-par or anything, it's just that for the most part they don't seem to grab me in the way that other focus episodes do. Having said that though, as you can tell from the premise of this episode, she is at the very least given a believable dilemma to be put in. I'm sure we've all had times in our lives when we've been given a choice of sticking with those we know and going the route that will more likely ensure victory of some sort. As such I praise the episode on presenting a clearly difficult choice for it's main character to
