One of the most important things you can do to ensure that a shoot goes smoothly and everyone stays happy is to go out of your way to help your model feel comfortable. I find that a cup of tea and a chat goes a long way. Before make-up or props come out, before the lens cap comes off, spend at least a few minutes chatting with the model. This is especially important if you haven't worked together, or met, before.
