Dust was thick in the air, lending an eerie, faded look to the surroundings and blending hard edges until they were indistinct smears. A woman's breath slowed and evened as her vision adjusted, her target appearing clearer to her. Squeezing the trigger, a bullet from the DMR shot out into the thick dust. There was a brief sound of the bullet hitting something hard, and a grunt fell, a neat hole centred between the eyes.
"I give that a ten." A man cackled as he knelt by the woman's side, taking aim with his own DMR. The woman glanced at him from the corner of her eye as he fired, the shot felling a Skirmisher. "Damn," he swore, looking sour, "neck shot." Huffing wryly under her helmet, the woman rolled her eyes. Her name was Chelsey, and the man beside her was Victor. Chapter Two: The Arbiter's Captives
When Eris woke up, her body felt light. Her eyes opened to a dark blue ceiling with a hexagonal pattern, which she examined briefly before sitting up. Looking down at her body, she blanched. She was wearing a grey dress, styled into a halter-top, with braces on her arms. Feeling exposed, she hugged herself as she examined the rest of the room. The woman she had tried to save, sleeping still, was dressed similarly, though her dress was white instead of grey. Eris opened her mouth only to close it, repeating the action a few times. She had never really seen clothing as beautiful, due to her upbringing and her life as a rebel soldier, but now she was confused. Wasn't she supposed to be dead?
