It's been awhile since I made HD work like this, but the E3 fever got me itching to produce this, I manage to find cumulative of 20hrs+ last week to complete this work.
This time I try to make something a bit more colorful in my Lara fanarts, which are usually gritty. I may be slow, I realized the island and environment is colorful after all lol...the gradient color scheme of this work is inspired by the new promo art btw.
Yes, why is she holding something quite familiar you ask?! Well, no specific reason, just a teaser or a spoof for TR 2013 since I don't konw if she'll ever pick up the dual wielding H&K USP MATCH anytime anywhere in the game. I mean, dual-wielding is a serious business really! The kick-back and all....
BUT, from the E3 summary, it is speculated that the twin-guns will be back, let's wait and see then

The tattered clothing is more of a symbolism instead of a fan-service. It's deliberately made to look like the iconic Lara tank top and short-pants. What that does here is metaphorically 'glimpsing' the person in Tomb Raider 2013 of what she'll become: From a graduate to the Lara that we know of.
I was inspired by the good ol''RAMBO: First Blood' movie where Stallone is literally the king of the wilderness, while presenting a clear message not to play games when you are the prey. So hope you enjoy this depiction of a woman at her predatory peak.

This is my second entry, I decided to break away from the usual gritty Lara depiction and make a tribute to Square Enix by portraying not only Lara, but the conceptual beauty of the gaming environment, specifically the ancient Japanese lore and it's supernatural realm. Hope this artwork contributes to the concept.
CONCEPT: Sacred hidden sanctuary comprise of shrines and temples that when Lara visits under the full-moon's light this ghostly ruin becomes 'alive' with mystical and spiritual presence, reminders of this once holy place.
- The ghostly lanterns boats represents wandering spirits/geist who in the past were that of devotees, dwellers and pilgrims; they are drawn to this sanctorium even in present time, and most probably to eternity. - The looming temples personifies itself in a way that 'they' are watching over Lara, towering over a mortal who appears in this forbidden vicinity after hundred of years from abandonment. - Orbs and particles materializes due to presence of otherworldly manifestation.
LARA: - The ice axe, as if gestured by Lara, is practically the new Tomb Raider emblematic item, it identifies the reborn Lara Croft, equivalent to the classic dual pistols H&K USP Match. The fact that it was handed to her by Roth makes it poetic, like a initiation of her becoming a true Croft. - Here I try to depict the 'explorer' within her as we are easily distracted by the hunter and survivor side of her. This art attempt to dial in on her passion, the legacy. - Lara's symbolic footing on the sharp stalagmite portrays her lightness and at the same time the perils of adventure as if life is balanced on the tip of a bull's horn. At least in Tomb Raider - Lara's 'looking back' pose is to show her acknowledgment towards viewers, especially Tomb Raider gamers. I believe this has a strong effect in the artwork.
TECHNICAL - Perspective-wise, it bends more towards creating drama and impact, hence I do not adhere strictly to 3-point perspective, though with a touch of distortion and this diagonal lasso'ed dutch angle. - Background is Matte Painting. - Here I'm going for that gaming promo art look with a balance of 'painter-ly' style and realism.
This is probably the biggest and most ambitious artwork that I ever done, the process to getting this result is pain in the ass. I start to think for something cool that I can put on my bedroom wall , I came out with the idea that was quite simple actually, the shipwreck and Lara, and done. But trust me its way harder to translate those idea into a blank canvas, I almost give it up and plan to recreate the new idea. It simple but it pretty much define the new Tomb Raider is. I love the whole concept of the new Tomb Raider game, I think its brilliant . Being a fan of miss Croft over 10 years, I never been so happy to see her in this new game
A digital piece inspired by the new game, I wanted to just keep it simple and work on color and Lara's face, I wanted to put a bow in... but I just feel like Lara holding a gun looks somewhat more like Lara Croft. Keeping an old feel to Lara and then working with the dirt and cuts, blood and lighting was the tricky part. But I'm loving learning new things about digital art and really loved working on this piece...even thought I've been up all night trying to get it to look right hehe.
I titled it a survivor is born just like we've seen in the advertisement for the new Tomb Raider, it just felt right because I wanted to add a bit of emotion in the piece, making Lara look unsure about her surroundings, holding a gun close to her chest showing a change in her was the idea for the image. Hope you guys like it
I rarely paint a background, but this time i want to challenge myself to do it... it take times, but Im satisfied with the result.. the original size is about 6000px wide and a lot of details in it . In the end i had to blur out the burned temple and some of the other detail because i want Lara to be a main focus in this artwork.
