Getting a First Storyboarding GigThis question came in from Twitter today: "How would I go about getting a first storyboarding gig?" I thought I'd put my answer on the blog so others can read it too. Here it is:Getting a First Storyboarding Gig3 years ago in Personal More Like This
When I was starting out I had absolutely no idea how to look for work myself. It ends up being different for everybody. The big thing when I was starting out was to make sure LOTS of people saw my work. This was before the Internet got started, so I was working on my college newspaper, making comics and showing them off at conventions. It was meeting a Ren & Stimpy director at a convention that helped me get my start. He liked my comics, and he told me all about how storyboarding for TV works.
The main thing that helped me get started was that I got my work OUT THERE where people could see it. That's a million times easier to do now than ever before; no publishing costs too get your work see by countless people through blogs and Facebook and Twitter, etc.
Here's a crazy story: last year I came across a guy on
Friend zone sonnet.Depression sucks. A lot. Mixing it with teen angst apparently produces a sonnet.Friend zone sonnet.4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I couldn't sleep because this was stuck in my head.
Once long ago, I felt my own true love
How others would taunt it, we denied it
I denied denial, put her above
my daily needs, wishing fates to collide
We had shared a childhood, made a bond
Nobody could break it, forever friends
Friends, all it was, I had grown much too fond
She knew of it, led me beyond amends
I followed too far and got my heart crushed
A catastrophe ending on thin ice
Holding friendship at least, ordeal hushed
Life's presented more, but each with no dice
Withering confidence, hope is waning
Future is dark, no one is remaining
Sorry I haven't updated in a while, haven't really done anything DA-relevant.

A magic of effective art can be a drawing that appears to be a movie still, clipped from a film narrative, evoking a powerful sense of storytelling— and the viewer wants to know the rest of the story. This phenomenon has recently manifested itself on deviantART— and in a big way— once again.

The AvengersYou know that giddy, gleeful feeling that renders you incapable of doing little more than giggle like a lunatic? The Avengers3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I pretty much had that from start to finish during the Avengers film (Which was released on Fair Blighty's shores as "Avengers Assemble" thanks to the past efforts of Steed and Peel).
There have only been a handful of movies that invoked that kind of response in me: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Abram's Star Trek, Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and the first Iron Man film are those which immediately spring to mind.
Indeed; Avengers is THE best Marvel movie since Iron Man. Ace cast, brilliant story, hysterical script, a scene that will stab anyone that's followed the films leading up to this point right through the heart and a fair few more surprises.
Chief among them being; how the hell did the Hulk become such a f**king awesome character after so many naff films?
I'm gonna go see this one again!
Epic Resources List - How to Get Awesome at ArtI often get asked how to get better at drawing and painting. While the main answer is practice there are a lot of fantastic resources that will make the journey far easier; below is a list of the ones I have personally found most useful. Some are free and some are paid, if you want the paid ones please actually buy them and support the hard-working artists that spend their valuable time providing quality education.Epic Resources List - How to Get Awesome at Art9 months ago in Personal More Like This
Also this is enough material to last you for, literally, years, so get one at a time, study it in detail, then once you're thoroughly finished move on to the next one. Reading a book or watching a dvd doesn't make you better. What makes you better is ingesting the information slowly, pondering and truly understanding it, and then applying it with diligent practice over a long period of time.
So without further ado, here is my...

the good don't stayI blinked, shifted and cringed. My body was sore, my mind was cloudy and everything throbbed, especially my feet. I blinked a few more times. Goodness, my eyelids were heavy and my wrists itched—how scratchy the blanket upon my chest was! "It looks like we have a survivor. How are you feeling?"
Turning my head, I saw a white coat, and as my eyes drifted up, there was a stethoscope, assorted pens stuffed inside a pocket, a clean-shaven chin and grey eyes. I opened my mouth, but closed it again, because my tongue was dry and I really didn't feel like talking to anyone. Honestly, I was awful at dying. Everything was trying to do me in, even myself, but I just wouldn't.
And then shame filled me when what I had done truly sunk in:
I could have died.
I wiggled my fingers—I was alive.
"How am I feeling?" I rasped as my old temper was aroused by the absurdity of the doctor's question. "I feel fine. Absolutely goddamn dandy. N

Alternate RealityHello Fellow Deviants!Alternate Reality3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Every couple of years I manage to crawl out of my dungeon and rejoin the public world for a few hours. This time around the outing was very special as I visited one of my favorite local Las Vegas comic shops. Alternate Reality Comics hosted a lovely reception for me as the feature artist of their October 2012 Artist Spotlight.

If Comic Oasis is my home away from home, then Alternate Reality is my home away from my home away from home.
Neither of which I visit often enough.

(unnecessary warning for massive amounts of profanity ahead)
I'm by no means innocent of using profanity in everyday life Typically I use it for emphasis, humor, or else when I'm righteously pissed at something and no bland, common word will express my feelings well enough. Sometimes I'm quoting someone. Sometimes I just feel like shouting "shit" at someone

So here is some Aud randomness.
I honestly believe in the idea of female empowerment through art. I believe that through art and through the right portryal of erotica women can finally get out from under the yoke of the social double standard on female sexuality that has existed for nearly 2000 years. I believe in taking ownership and control over my sexuality through art and conventions that I see as positive and beautiful. These photos are a true representation of the very real me.
My origin is an unlikely combination of backgrounds. I am mostly French ( My dad was 100% French) but from my mothers side I have Italian,Japanese, and even some Russian lineage. I am a true cocktail of internationalism. I r

I really have no idea how to put this into words but I think this should be done. Some of my closest friends have known this and I feel like I should be telling of you guys now.
This week... has been a really drainful, hectic, stressful week. And it'll probably be my last week to be goofing and drawing around ;u;
Now let's start with every possible hectic thing that can happen to a girl in just one week.
1. I got the letter calling me to work. As you know, I'm about to be working as a medical doctor; doing my hell-ish internship for 2 years in the government hospital. I got the call, and I'll be going to a some sort of 'training/orientation' on the 25th Nov (that's tomorrow for me) and I'll start working the week after.
The dreadful hours, stressful environment of senior doctors have all be warned to me by my friends who had been working, so yes; I am leaving dA, and might as well put down the tablet pen for forever. Might be overdramatic in a sense, but I ca

Working Hard for the Money
My step father once told me, when I was a kid, that what made someone a professional rather than an amateur was that they were paid for what they did. He was wrong.
Many people use my step father's explanation for what makes a professional and I find that it leads to shoddy workmanship because it takes the focus off of getting good at what we do and shifts it to getting good enough to get paid. Or even worse just getting paid. The craft is often thrown out the window in favor of just doing whatever it takes t

How I workI've gotten questions about painting demos on how I work, but I don't have any of those yet. I definitely want to try that out though. While I can't show you right now, I can tell you about it.How I work2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Creating an illustration is fun. But it's also a lot of work if you want to make it any good. Most people don't realize how much work it really is. How much thinking and preparation is needed. It's really problem solving. You're solving problem after problem, trying to make things work. Thankfully it's a fun problem to solve and you can explore as you learn new things.
Also, I'm not talking about sketching, or doodling, or speed painting. I'm talking about a story-driven illustration.
This check list is by no means definitive, especially when it comes to the design elements like characters and location design. In fact, it's more of a starting point. These are useful guidelines, reminders.
This is all common knowledge among illustrators. You learn this stuff in art school. You also learn the foun

Don't forget to this journal so the works featured here can get more attention!
As you can see, many artists will be featured more than once, but that is not because I favour them, I simply think that their works deserve recognition, just as all the other people I have featured here. Some of you are really extraordinary.
I'm also collecting a few points, so I can get a premium membership and do even more of this stuff. The remaining points go out to helping deviants and groups!

How to get started with Pixel ArtLately I have frequently been asked what programs I use for pixeling and/or animating and also in general how I go about it. Now I currently don't have the time to create a tutorial of my own but I figured until I will be able to do so I could at least give you some helpful tips and link you to some tutorials made by others. How to get started with Pixel Art3 years ago in Personal More Like This
About the programs I use
I do pretty much all the pixeling itself in Photoshop Elements 8.0 which sadly enough isn't free. But don't worry, in general photshop is even a little overpowered for pixel art, I simply use it because I am most used to it.
Technically you can even use Microsoft Paint for pixeling, after all the only two things you really need to be able to create pixel art is a pen tool and the ability to zoom in far enough. The only real disadvantage about Paint is the lack of transparency support so you can only create pixels with an opaque background.
However I can offer you a really great third optio
