Autumn Showcase!Hey Everyone,Autumn Showcase!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Unfortunately, Lotus Flower didn't quite make it into the top 10% of the shorts category in the AOFAs. But, the good news is, due to there being a number of technical issues during their first ever Spring Showcase, Lotus will be re-screened during the 2014 Autumn Showcase! The film will be eligible for votes once more! Many thanks to everyone who took the time to support Lotus this time around, and I'll keep you all posted on the next set of AOFA festival dates.

Vampire CollegeThe other day, my dad handed me a printout of an article from a conservative website about going to college. Dad does this from time to time, I think because he suspects I'm a filthy liberal, and wants to send a few shots across the bow to see if I fire back. I usually don't, because I've been through enough warfare to have a better idea of when to pick my battles.Vampire College2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well, I won't reference the article directly, but the gist of it was that college is a bit of a costly venture that doesn't always yield the results it promises for the price of admission, and may actually do more harm than good. (High schoolers, meditate on that for a minute, please)
Now, the article itself sort of descended into a screed about how colleges just crank out liberals anyway, and liberals tend to vote Democrat, and we should just bust the whole thing up because dear God, we need conservative voters or they'll have a WOMAN in the White House next...
...Which is unfortunate, because "liberal conspiracy" aside, I

Photoshop shortcuts making you forget PhotoshopInstead of a feature, this time I'd like to introduce you to some shortcuts in Photoshop that really help me save time and a lot of my nerves.Photoshop shortcuts making you forget Photoshop2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I make use of all of these shortcuts (and a couple more), so even if for some of you these look too complicated, they give you power over Photoshop. By employing these, I don't have to leave the canvas to go search for a function in the depths of Photoshop's many menus.
While I think that these shortcuts can be used universally in all versions of Photoshop, I can only account for CS4 to CS6, maybe CS3.
If you've been frustrated by Photoshop's inability of undoing steps with Ctrl+Z, here's your answer.

You can change the colour surrounding your canvas by right clicking there. I use b

CritStop 03 - Art school vs self teaching?Greetings Concepteez!CritStop 03 - Art school vs self teaching?1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Apologies for missing out on the CritStop last week. I was at a weekend long concept-design workshop which didn't leave me with much time to do a post.
I might run down some of the things we did in the workshop in a future post, but this week I thought I would do something a little bit different. I have been getting quite a few queries over the last few weeks about making the choice between formal training courses such as university or college over that of self-teaching and using online resources and short courses. One of these was Nyte-Tyme who wrote:
"I mentioned before that I am currently attending a school called ------- University. So far, my first semester of a Junior year here has been bad. Art history classes (which I think are somewhat necessary) a Physics of Light and Color class. A web design class and a video and audio class which was essentially a film class after awhile. But I've been recently looking into C

Starving ArtistThe Starving ArtistStarving Artist5 months ago in Personal More Like This
This topic is about rates and wages that an artist should start to consider when taking on a new job. This is my advice, so take this as advice.
So let’s begin. As an artist you should know right away that you are valuable. You can recreate people’s imagination and ideas into reality. You are the one who brings people together to be able to all see the vision for the final product. This is valuable. Keep this in mind when you take new jobs. Think about how many hours you plan on slaving over iteration after iteration. Because even though you may have a voice, if you agree to whatever the arrangement are, you must live up to their standards. So make sure you are paid well.
Imagine a client asks you to do 50 hours of work for only $500 dollars. That’s $10 an hour. That is not enough. You can go get a job that could pay you as much if not more, without being an artist. I’ve seen people’s salaries as low as 30k a year. This is not acc

2014 Brushes + TumblrHey everyone!2014 Brushes + Tumblr8 months ago in Personal More Like This
So, many times people ask me about what brushes I use and what not... I have a link for my brushes on my profile but I don't use that set anymore, so I just wanted to share the brush-set I've been using lately with you
You can download it here:
BRUSHES, FUCK YEAH!
The last 5 brushes or so are the ones I use the most ( like 95% of the time ).
It is much simpler than my previous set as I'm trying to "free" my "workspace" as much as possible. It still has some brushes that are universally in everyone's brush-set nowadays, so honestly I'm not sure who to credit anymore since they've been around for so long, but they probably come from Jaime Jones, Leventep, Kekai, M@ etc...
Just remember that brushes are just another tool and won't make your work better or worse automatically. Just use the ones you like the most and stick with that
I have also recently made a tumblr account in which I sh

DYNAMIC AND ACTIVE POSING FOR STOCKStock & ResourcesDYNAMIC AND ACTIVE POSING FOR STOCK2 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Broadly defined, Action Stock is any photo-reference in which the subject is doing SOMETHING. That 'something' does not need to be extreme or particularly kinetic, it just has to show the effects of various forces on the bodies (or other objects) in the image. Perusing an artifact, sitting on someone's knee, even enjoying the aroma of a cup of coffee are great examples of actions that, when explored as stock images, can be of great value to artists.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with extreme, kinetic, over-the-top actions, either...
~ ~ ~
It's worth stating the obvious: if you are interested in exploring the more "kinetic" end of the action spectrum, know your limits. Don't work beyond your skill level and observe all necessary safety precautions; no shot is worth getting hurt over.

How to make complex wire wrapsYES! I'm gonna tell you one of millions of possible ways to make themHow to make complex wire wraps1 year ago in Personal More Like This
If this is your first complex or multi-stone piece try not to get upset if it does not quite turn out as planned this still happens to me and i made dozens of them if not over 100
Follow these steps:
1. pick the stones/beads you want to use. you can pick 2 or 20, it doesn't matter because you can easily add or remove some of them from the plan as you go along
2. arrange them on a flat surface the way you see fit. if you have play doh (or something like it) use it to form a dome and stick the stones into that - it will help you if you are having problems with 3D planning in your head possibly draw a rough sketch of what you are trying to make
3. take the central stone or the largest stone or the one you really want to wrap in a certain way
4. wrap that stone but make sure to leave enough wires to attach the rest to it (thick wires need less length, thin wires more - for example leave 2" of 20ga and

I was trying to get a different look in Photoshop using a 3D render as a base and I thought the result was pretty interesting. Here is a walk through!
Starts in ZBrush for the sculpt, then keyshot for render, then Photoshop for composition.
A Must Read!Guys, i just want to share these journals with you (created by: Suzanne-Helmigh) whether you're a beginner, a student, or a professional artist, these are good articles, and covered a lot of good points, not only for becoming a good artist but things to be aware about as an artist. If you have a moment, have a look! I've shared one about the myth of concept art on my art blog, but i didn't want to leave out the rest of it. So instead i've decided to share these on here, since i have more watchers here than on my art blog. I hope it will help you in some way. Big thanks to Suzanne for making these!A Must Read!7 months ago in Personal More Like This
