A few words on punk vs. steampunk.Never Mind The BollocksA few words on punk vs. steampunk.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Or: How Spec-Lit Fucked Up A Perfectly Good Word.
Punk 'til you puke!
As a youth revolution punk was a solid fist full of fuck you! An angry, ugly, straight razor attack on the bloated excess of 1970's pop culture.
There was punk rock music from the likes of The Sex Pistols, Black Flag, and The Dead Kennedys.
There was punk cinema in films such as Repoman, Suburbia, and The Fabulous Stains.
There was punk lit, punk art, even a punk offshoot of gonzo journalism.
It was a way of life fueled by a belief that nothing is sacred, authority is never to be trusted, and most importantly, you can always Do It Yourself...better known as the DIY ethos.
In a word, punk is rebellion.
And I know a bit about words. Word have power. Word have strength. Words are the bits of

Most of you know I'm really into whimsical fantasy art. My favorite fantasy creature of all time is the mermaid. I've got some really awesome mermaid art tucked away in my favorites and I feel like sharing it with everyone. So I've decided to do this journal as a little tribute to mermaids and the wonderful artists who love them as much as I do! This is just a selection of all the pieces I have in my favorites. Yep, you read right...a selection. That means there's more. Yeah...I'm not obsessed...really....I'm not...ENJOY!

How to start getting exposure and notice on DA.Hello there curious Deviant! :iconmeowfaceplz:How to start getting exposure and notice on DA.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So you are reading this now because you are either suffering from very few notice or exposure and feedback, or you are curious to increase your popularity, and get more viewers. Or maybe you just came here from your inbox, and you are real pissed, then don't be, this Journal will help You more than it would help me.
Being a known Artist here on Da is a challenge, but once you accomplish that you are rewarded with quite a great things. The success of getting yourself or work noticed is dependable on many factors, and I will list those briefly so you can have a general Idea:
One of the major factors of being known here is the Deviations themselves, nobody wants to watch a person who does nothing but commenting for example, upload some deviations, if you can't draw upload photographs, if that's even hard then submit a story or Poem. And keep your submissions organized and steady, never go out in regular inacti

Avatar Tutorials: How to Make Avatars:iconfree-davatars:Avatar Tutorials: How to Make Avatars5 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Two of the most frequently asked questions we get at the FreeAvatarProject are... "How do you make avatars?"
"How can I make an avatar?"And who can blame anyone for asking? The only advice dA offers on the subject is... :faq662:...Not very informative, is it? Well, there's a good reason for that! Because there are so many different ways to make avatars, it's difficult to answer these questions in just one FAQ.
This is why some of dA's nicest avatar creators decided to offer tutorials that can help people learn how to make their own avatars. We spent the entire month of February 2010 gathering up this type of information to help answer your questions.
However, before we get ahead of ourselves, let's make sure you have the right software to get you started.
Lots of artists already have the right software to create an avatar.
You may already have Paint, a fairly basic program that come

10. Chocolate (2008)
Probably the best martial arts movie to come out of Thailand, although influenced heavily by the Hong Kong martial arts movie scene. This modern classic is well worth a watch. It's about an autistic girl with incredible combat skills who sets out on a mission to ensure that her mother's debts with local gangs are paid back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoccbDV5NOI
9. Magnificent Butcher (1979)
Directed by Yuen-woo Ping, this action-comedy (originally titled Lin Shi Rong) was made in an attempt to enjoy the same success that Drunken Master II did. Sammo Hung stars as Lam Sai Wing, a clumsy yet talented fighter. The martial arts featured in this film are old school and an extremely technical merging of two different forms. It did not go on to duplicate the success of Drunken Master II, but it is considered a classic
Why I Draw Women OftenI recently got a message, and I will slightly reword it so as not to cause profane friction, nor will I state who it came from, but it read like this: "Why is everything you post regarding a woman? I think it's very sexist when the only thing you can draw are breasts and buttocks like it's the only thing in the world."Why I Draw Women Often2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Okay, so by now, if you haven't been watching me for a good minute, you know that I really like to draw women, and I like portraying the female form, usually and often in a tasteful manner. I could hypothetically end that question there and just answer "I wasn't aware everything in my gallery was a woman or had breasts and a butt" and then post a picture or two of Rai Rivet... But I'm not going to do that. I'm going to explain my stance on drawing the female form and my adoration for it.

Best way to record yourself drawing digitallyUpdate: Added section about CONVERTING video sessions below.Best way to record yourself drawing digitally3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Quick bit of help here, because I'm not sure if everyone knows the best way to handle this if you want to record your progress while drawing in Photoshop, Manga Studio, Painter, whatever.
IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWSYou may have tried some of the screen recorders out there like CamStudio, FRAPS, or some free ones out there. You may have noticed, or had become frustrated with, the fact that many of these programs cause a significantly huge hit on your system's performance. When you try drawing in Photoshop, your tablet response comes to a screeching halt. Then you find a program that records without impacting your drawing performance -- only to find that the resulting video recorded at about 1 frame every 3 seconds. Then you tried FRAPS, then found out that 4 minutes of video resulted in a 3.2GB file. All of these are less than ideal.
A while back, I searched all over the net for a program that encoded video from my screen

Racial Activism and MeHey hey hey! Rob here with another "something-to-get-off-of-his-chest"!Racial Activism and Me2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Time and again, I'm approached by some of my audience asking "Rob, why don't you ever draw black people?" First off, they may have not even looked into my gallery for those people of color or what have you, because they're there, sure enough.
The long answer is:
Well... what gets me is that when they find out I'm black, they expect that I should hold some sort of allegiance to "my race" or "make a change" as a "popular" black artist who can, figuratively speaking, "put blacks on the map".
There's nothing wrong with that, of course, and there's nothing wrong with people whose main goal is doing that. It's their lives, they're free to believe in whatever they want to.
But to hold me to a certain level where people think I'm obligated to draw my race more often than others because of the "history", I don't agree with. I'm an African-American born in the 80s. I was not born during the times of t

Collection: Easy RidersCollection: Easy Riders1 month ago in Art Features More Like This
The tragedy of owning a motorcycle is that it sometimes must be “driven” instead of “ridden.” One must occasionally “drive” one’s bike to the store for a loaf of bread or to execute some other mundane activity unworthy of being a “motorcycle rider.” One is meant to ride, not drive, a bike—as it were a contentious beast forever being tamed. A bike should not be just a vehicle for the conveyance of bodies and materials. Riding should be transformative. A rider becomes one with the natural world being riven in twain by the wake of his bike’s passing. A rider becomes a living metaphor. A rid

Here's a sample of responses I've heard from some editors over the years when I've raised practical business concerns regarding comic book publishing:
"No, we don't know exactly what books you'll be doing, but we're (insert name of big publisher) Comics, so sign exclusive with us and not (insert name of competing publisher who has titles ready for you)!"
"This is a (insert name of big writer) book! I know he's late, but just think of how many people would love to be in your shoes!"
"The page rate isn't good, but at least you'll be getting to work with (name of big superhero whom you're supposed to be a fan of)!"
"We won't fly you out or put you into a hotel, but you should come so you can sign at the booth for us! Who doesn't love signing autographs?"
What do these statements have in common? They're emotional arguments made to sidestep yo

Sketchbook Pro 6So most of you know that I'm a Sketchbook Pro user.Sketchbook Pro 62 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days back, Autodesk released Sketchbook Pro 6, and I think this is the version that's going to make a lot of people who have YET to experience Sketchbook Pro in full, or haven't really given the past versions a chance, switch over to making it their digital drawing software of choice; heck, even their PAINTING software of choice.
We still have the cleverly-designed user interface, that makes it easy on the eyes and mind when we're brainstorming and sketching. With the handful of new tools introduced, we still have a clutter-free drawing environment, and man, there's some awesome tools this time around. I'll go down the list:
The Brush Library
The main brush toolbar itself has a click-and-drag function, allowing you to store all your often-used brushes in each of the "lanes". You then can click the button on the upper-right and then a fu

Comic careers are like any other career in entertainment: if you don't stay relevant and adapt to a trend, you'll eventually peak and then bottom out. But there are more things that can help end a career. Here's a list of 5 that I've been thinking about lately.
1. SOCIAL MEDIA TAKE-DOWN
The creator does something that somehow goes viral, turning his (or her) readers against him. Bad behavior at a convention, sexual harassment online, or a semi-racist Tweet made worse by bumbling attempts to correct it. Or maybe the creator gets blamed for something innocent: innocent comments taken out of context, or involvement in a controversial project that he had no say over. Whatever the case, “social media take-downs” can harm careers, leaving a permanent black mark on your career.
I imagine this one is the most common: no matter how hard you work—and no matter how much a
