Common Misconceptions: Traditional ArtHello all! I've come up with a short series called "Common Misconceptions" just to debunk some myths and misguided trends that are so often part of what we experience as we grow. This first "Common Misconceptions" topic will focus on traditional art. (This series is also being shared with #ArtistsHospital which you all should join if you haven't done so yet!!!)Common Misconceptions: Traditional Art8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Traditional is better than digital because it takes more talent and skill
WRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONG. Did I say that was wrong, I'll say it again for emphasis WRONG! Like all mediums, digital art is simply different than traditional art in the same way photography is different than film. They are simply different. Photoshop does not "magically" give you the skills to recreate the paintings in the Sistine Chapel any more than holding a paintbrush makes you Rembrandt.
It's 'bad' to use reference images
I'll admit, I was wary of usi

UndinesUndinesUndines7 years ago in Personal More Like This
Undines are beings associated with the element of Water. In ancient lore they are recalled in the images of water nymphs and mermaids. Springs, streams, and wells are favored by Undines. Their traditional abodes were among marsh reeds and vegetation growing alongside rivers and lakes.
The activity of Undines is responsible for the vitality within all liquids - therefore they play a vital role in plant, animal, and human life.
Undines are seen as sensual and graceful in their movements, with very strong emotions. Undines are the most human and seductive of the four elemental types. They tend to be sympathetic and loving, and are most helpful in matters dealing with emotional issues, such as love and friendship, desire and lust.

2 Tail Mermaids or UndinesI know these are VERY rough, but I still just LOVE them.2 Tail Mermaids or Undines5 years ago in Personal More Like This
I haven't been able to deside whether I want to just call them 2 tail Mermaids or Undines... and some people considder Mermaids as a kind of Undine.
An undine is a kind of Water fairy, sprite, ellemental, etc... and there are so many reditions and versions of them... whether you believe in fairies, or whether you just like fantasy art.![]()

How to improve your skills in close-up-photographySince many people asked me how I take my pictures and why they are so "special", I would like to tell you how I manage things when I take pictures. How to improve your skills in close-up-photography6 months ago in Art Blogs & Mags More Like This
I. Finding the location
When I go outside to take pictures of nature, I do barely have any concepts in my mind. I just go and let nature inspire me. The first important step is finding a location. It is not that difficult to find an interesting background. I personally do prefer backgrounds which are not monochrome. Many shades of light (light and dark contrasts or different colors) make your picture interesting, no matter if the final result will be monochrome or colorful in the end.I look out for locations where not many people are. Like a big meadow in front of a house or a field or forests. (Forests do have the special plus that it does almost always have different light shadings I mentioned in 2).
II. Know your possibilities!
You have found your favourite location? Great! Many people do the mistake to
How to make money outside and inside DeviantArtThis is meant more for younger, newer deviants who have run into a spot of trouble making some extra cash,How to make money outside and inside DeviantArt3 years ago in Resources More Like This
I see many people posting how they make no money on their prints through DeviantArt.
To me, it just seems like all you need is a lesson in business.
First, before you do anything, realize what our "Target Audience" is.
Do you draw anime? Or do you take pictures of cute animals? Or are you into realism? Let's face it, you aren't going to find very many older people who enjoy fine art on the internet. Try and figure out what age group your work appeals to.
Second, use DeviantArt as your "Warehouse"
DeviantArt is great. You can showcase your products and then ship them to people without you doing anything. However it is an Art Community. In DeviantArt, you work is only shown to other artists, to get more money you have to use DeviantArt as your Warehouse. It will supply the customer, but you need to bring the customer to the site.
Deviantart is fairly appealing, but lets face it, man

- guiding you as an artist and improving your artistic skills
So having said that... let's get started!
I have been drawing for a long time. Since I was little I would draw all the time on anything I could find. That passion for drawing and art has always stayed with me. But the problem is talent or potential will only get you so far. If you really want to become a great artist you will have to put in many hours of work. And you would preferably have someone there to guide you. Even now I am learning about basic skills I wish I had learned years ago. That is the problem of being self taught... you have to figure everything out yourself. Of course there are benefits to that too. Self taught artists are generally very motivated and passionate people. I have only come to the point where I am now just because I am passionate and slightly obsessed with drawing. But I want to know more, learn more and improve more. So that is why I am setting up this little drawi
Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.Tutorials and techniques2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.
Hope yo
7 Tips To Instantly Become A Better ArtistPractice, practice, practice. Gah.7 Tips To Instantly Become A Better Artist1 year ago in Gossip More Like This
Attend life drawing classes over the summer. Blegh.
Take a sketchbook with you everywhere you go, and fill up ten of those bad boys at the coffee shop. Pfft.
Let's be honest here. We all want to become better artists, like, right frickin' now. We don't even want to have to suffer through hour-long tutorials of some pompous snooty hack bloviating over the intricate methods of drawing eyes on YouTube. We want progress, we want improvement, and we want it on our desk in ten minutes ago!
Fine, fine, I hear ya'. While these aren't going to make an instant Leonardo da Vinci out of you, these might get you up to...ehh...Basquiat caliber. Sure, I've made tutorials, but those are more about setting up Photoshop for the sake of coloring an image, and not so much building yourself artistically. Those are more technical lessons. Artistically

Magick is a wonderful thing but it is not the candles and the wands that work the magick, it is the inner light that really does the heavy lifting, before you can even hope to cast a spell that works you need to work on straightening out the inssues that lie within. Yes i know some may want to follow this path to use magick to fix those flaws, but it really is the other way around, you have to be willing to put the time and effort into overcomeing your flaws and selfdoubt.
And above all you need to have faith in the goddess and god (whichever you may believe in), so much so that if one or more of your spells dont work you still perservere and trust in the greater power. I am not trying to be mean or harsh but wicca, and magick are not short cuts to success and they are not "fix all" cures, like anything else you need to put in time to meditate on what flaws you may have that are keepi

Ok, Im going to start a tutorial journal just in case people want some quick links to access webpages with some good info and tips on creating things. Links are generally from everywhere, ranging from articles, to personal artists websites, to art communities, to where ever. If I see it and I think it has some good stuff that will help people, it will go in here. ( :
I have tried to put these in respective categories, but if you feel something doesnt belong please tell me and I can move it.

I am trying to spread the word about this massive theft case just as someone did with www.art4love.com. Fortunately that site has already been shut down. So I hope something similar can be done with markyourspot.
Please please check to see if anything of yours has been taken, and file a DMCA with the sites host.
I'm not the only one on DA which has been stolen. In fact, lots of artists have been affected by this.
Please fav this article so that it can spread fast!
