The Normandy. Walking her decks for the first time two years ago sent chills up my spine. Good chills. Like the kind you get when you meet someone and know immediately that sooner or later you'll wake up in the same bed. Like the kind I got the first time I met Kaidan Alenko. Only with the Normandy, I knew it was love. With Kaidan, well, it's been two years.
You've asked me more than once to write down my memories, Miranda. Search for gaps. Not that I'd tell you if I found any. If you thought the project you poured yourself into for so long had turned out anything less than perfect, I've no doubt you'd take it as a personal affront. Might even try to go back in and correct the flaw.
Okay, bad joke. We may have gotten off to a shaky start but I've come to realize you care about things more deeply than you'll ever admit. And you helped save Garrus. So I owe you. And so I'll write.
Garrus. Now that brings back memories. The first time I saw him sta
Garrus ReflectsMy investigation into Saren included access to the personnel files of the entire Normandy crew, but even without reading her dossier I would have known who Shepard was the moment she walked into the Presidium. She was one of those rare individuals who wear authority like a second skin. It showed in the way she was aware of everything around her while at the same time focusing on her goal. In the way her squad followed behind her, falling naturally into their support roles. You respected her not because of her rank or because some regulation said you had to, but because the indefinable energy she radiated gave you no choice but to believe in her. And I soon came to learn first-hand the power of that silent synergy she formed with everyone around her.Garrus Reflects3 years ago in Sci-Fi More Like This
Now, sitting in her cabin, watching her sleep, I think back to those early days. All the things they said about me were true. I was idealistic, hot-headed, impulsive, definitely a shoot first ask questions later kind of guy. I hated injusti

I know you saw what happened via the security cams in your office, Miranda. Too bad you didn't make it down, I think you might have enjoyed it.
Since we set aside part of the cargo hold to be used as a sparring ring, Grunt and Garrus have often made use of it but today I was the one who needed it. I know you know about the letter Kaidan sent me. (No need to pretend otherwise, now is there?) Well, at first I was happy to hear from him. Ecstatic, actually. And that happiness lasted through the first three read thru's. I should have stopped at three because unfortunately the more I read his note, the angrier I became. On Horizon he yelled at me for not contacting him. Hell, until that day I couldn't even find him. All his links were blocked, though by Cerberus or the Alliance or both I have no idea, and no one up to then would even give me a hint about his location. Then he admits he knew I was alive? And he was just there to see if the rumors of my working with Cerberu

I've no doubt the entire ship knows Garrus came to my cabin last night, and like the rest, I'm sure you're wondering what happened. (Bless Edi and the privacy veil she gave us.) He left a short while ago to run a final set of calibrations before we hit the relay, so I may as well gather my thoughts while I can.
I won't bore you with the details, suffice to say we took our time - knowing full well this might be the only opportunity we would ever have to be together. At first it was enough just to touch but slowly we began to learn about each other, explore our differences as well as our similarities. There were a few awkward moments and a lot of laughter but no embarrassment. And when we were ready, that first time was very slow and very gentle as we connected and bonded in ways I never would have thought possible. The second time was for fun and the third time, when he finally got it through that thick mass of plates that passes for a head that he wasn't going to hurt me, we bo

She felt the small sharp sting of a medigel pen. Once, twice, three times. She didn't need to open her eyes to recognize his voice, but she needed to see him. "Garrus? How? I saw you escape in the Normandy."
"And leave my best girl behind? Never happen."
Had it just been a dream? Wishful thinking? All she wanted was for him to be safe. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, but you took some bad hits. Don't move. I've stopped most of the bleeding but I'm out of medigel."
He chuckled. "Yeah, I guess you have." He tried her omnitool, but it was as useless as his own. "Our communications are out but I'm sure they'll find us soon enough."
"I'm not sure. I remember fighting next to you when we were hit with a blast that sent the entire team flying. Knocked me out cold. I don't know how long I was out but when I came to there was some sort of barri
Frankie - Chapter 1An erratic breeze blew the leather duster away from his legs before snapping it back again as Garon stood surveying the ally below from his vantage point at the roof's edge. Demons. A Wyvern leading six Brutes, huge manlike creatures capable of throwing a car as easily as most men threw a baseball. Apparently his sister was trying to send a message.Frankie - Chapter 12 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
Most of them carried blades, but he knew their boar-like tusks were every bit as deadly as their daggers and in a fight they preferred to gore or crush their opponents rather than stab them. Standing among them, the Wyvern with his slight, sinewy frame looked almost childlike, his blue-black hair falling straight and long to his ankles where a sudden light gust caused it to undulate around his legs in an eerie pantomime of Garon's duster.
He toyed with the idea of fighting them with fangs and claws. The battle would be viscerally satisfying but impractical considering how many there were. He had to concede that this time it would be better

Ah, the Citadel. Still a hotbed of hypocrisy. I played nice with the Council even though I felt like popping them all with a big fat singularity. They threatened to put me on trial for treason. Treason! After all I did for them. Hell, I died for them. It's not like I asked Cerberus to bring me back. As I recall, I didn't have much say in the matter. One minute I'm savior of the Citadel and the next I'm public enemy number one. Well, at least the clenched teeth and frozen smile got my Specter status reinstated; with the small caveat I stay out of this part of the galaxy.
And Anderson. Yes I owe him a lot, and yes, I still respect the man. But he dodged my questions saying only that Kaidan was on assignment but that he couldn't tell me where. Classified, he said. Couldn't say more as long as I was working for Cerberus, he said. And he even had the gall to have Kaidan's picture sitting out on his desk. Go ahead Anderson, punch me in the gut. "Hey, Commander. Laying down on the job again, I see. Though I gotta admit you look a lot better than you did the last time I saw you laid out."

I told them to quit blowing smoke up my " he glanced at EDI who was watching him with the quizzical way she had when she was trying to understand a human idiom, "uh, I accused them of lying. Anyway, they took me to the facility where they were rebuilding you."
She grimaced. "Jacob once told me I was nothing but meat and tubes when they brought me in."
"That's an understatement. This was about a year after the Normandy went down and there were at least a hundred machines keeping you alive, but at least you looked like you. To prove
Frankie - Chapter 5They were quiet as they strolled through the rose garden, the early evening air still playing a subtle melody of fragrance around them as they made their way to the small fountain and benches that rested in its center. Garon turned to look at her, marveling at how the discrete lighting that caused the water to sparkle and dance also brought a glow to her face, a face that even now stole the breath from his lungs. His hands longed to reach out and brush back the errant strand of hair that had slipped out of place, but he knew one touch would never be enough and he kept his hands still, waiting for her to speak first.Frankie - Chapter 52 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
Kari sat on one of the benches and waited until Garon did the same. "Thank you for seeing me tonight."
"You need only ever call."
"I know. Thank you. But I would never abuse our friendship that way."
He smiled, a little self-mockingly. Friendship? Perhaps. But only in that he would do anything for her. "Daniel knows you're here?"
"Sneaking around isn't my style, Garon."

Everyone's been trying to get into my head. You, Kelly, even Joker, although he was just trying to make me feel better. Not easy for an avowed "not a people person", person but his intentions were good. I know it's your job to keep tabs on my mental state but relax, I'm fine. It just took a little time for me to sort it out.
Horizon. It would be our first opportunity to engage the enemy directly and a chance to test Mordin's seeker swarm defense. And then I was given the additional intel that Kaidan was there under orders from the Alliance. Mentally I filed it as part of the mission. There wasn't time to do anything else.
They hit us almost as soon as we landed but Mordin's theories were sound and our defenses held. The first few waves of husks fell under our counter assault, giving us a moment to look around and asses our enemy. That's when the panic hit. "I don't know how you pulled it off, but you did it, Shepard. Communications are back up and reports are flooding in from all over the galaxy." He took her from her two companions, wrapping her into a bear hug. He didn't even try to hide the tears in his voice. "You did good, child."
"Just doing my job, sir." It was the last thing she remembered saying before her world went black.
Shepard opened her eyes to see Miranda hovering above her. There was a moment of déjà vu and panic set in as she struggled to sit up, only to be pushed gently back onto the bed.
"Relax, Shepard. You're at Huerta Memorial Hospital. You've only been out for a few days. I promise.

"Hey, Sky, check it out. I was digging around the Coven's archives and found this really wicked spell book. Figured I'd give some of the spells a try, just for kicks, you know? Never thought they'd work but so far every one of them has. This last one is a summoning spell of some sort, so I figured, why not?"
Sky's brother continued to place candles around the pentagram he had drawn on their basement floor, carefully lighting each wick and murmuring incantations even as he chewed and popped his bubble gum.
"What spell book?"
"Over on the table. Have a look. And don't stress, I promise to take it back first thing Monday morning. I've already been through almost every spell book they have there, but this one's just way different. Actually," he paused, sprinkling a final ingredient before lighting another candle, "it's really cool."
Sky picked up the book and froze. It was one of the spell books that had been written and distributed a few years ear
A Shadowed Heart - Chapter 1Darkness. A void so absolute it was alive, its tortured heartbeat measured by the slow erratic splash of water echoing in the distance. Somewhere lost within its bowels a hand reached out in question, but finding only rough, damp stone, it jerked quickly away before tentatively reaching out again. Cautiously a woman slowly pulled herself up but the darkness was so all-encompassing that for a moment there was a feeling of vertigo as her senses struggled to find a reference point.A Shadowed Heart - Chapter 11 year ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
She didn't know where she was or why she was there. But even as the questions formed, thought gave way to instinct and survival demanded she move. With one hand on the wall she inched her way toward the echoing water, her bare feet feeling out each hesitant step. In places the passage was so narrow the stones tore at her threadbare shift, but she pushed her way through and pressed on.
Thoughts, disorganized and scattered, swirled through her mind until one rose up to tear a scream from her throat. A name. What

Two bodies ran toward him, arms out, auburn pigtails flying. Garon scooped them up and scowled his darkest scowl as their arms and legs wrapped around him.
"GiGi? What manner of impertinence is this? I am Lord High Ruler of the entire Vampire Nation. You will address me with the decorum my position demands."
Still holding onto him, Jess and Sara looked at each other, grinning broadly. As was their habit they spoke in tandem, finishing one another's sentences.

" Your GiGi Highness."
At their giggles, he shook his head. "Cheeky urchins. Such insolence toward the Crown cannot go unpunished. To the dungeons." It was an old game, but they still squealed in delighted terror as he warped them into the deepest part of his cellar. "Curses, it appears all the cells are full. To the tower then." They shrieked and clung even tighter when they found themselves at the castle's highest point, the wind whipping through the open arche
Frankie - Chapter 3Frankie entered the library and glanced quickly around before perching herself on the slightly too tall, uncomfortably stiff, high-backed chair in front of Garon's desk. As he seemed to be rather engrossed in whatever it was he was doing, she decided she would sit quietly and wait patiently until he was ready to acknowledge her. Unfortunately, as usual, her patience was incapable of exceeding the twenty second mark and for a moment she toyed with the idea of swinging her legs until her toes kicked his desk, but then admitted that the beautifully crafted piece of furniture probably didn't deserve that kind of treatment, tempting as the thought was.Frankie - Chapter 32 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
"Do you know you're one of the richest men in the world?"
He continued to work on the papers in front of him, not bothering to look up. "The richest, actually."

"My status would be common knowledge if they could track all of my assets. Which they can't." He signed a few more docu
Edge of Dawn - Chapter 2Kari turned and forgot to breath. Maybe it was the adrenaline still raging through her system but the world suddenly narrowed until nothing else existed except the man walking toward her. He was handsome, extraordinarily so, but it wasn't just his physical appearance that stopped her. Something about him she couldn't explain reverberated through her being and for the second time in a too short day, feelings and emotions she hadn't experienced in years flared to life. Flustered, she gave a quick beseeching look to her friend.Edge of Dawn - Chapter 23 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
Sky obliged by weaving a glamour over her, concern still plain on her face but now tempered with an appraising smile. "Gotta say, that man is hot."
"That man is a police officer and he's going to think we're responsible for what happened here." Unable to help herself, Kari sighed. "Why don't men like that ever show up when you have a flat tire?"
"Because those kind of men always turn out to be ax murderers. Which you'd know if you'd go to the movies occasionally. B
Frankie - Chapter 6Kari could see Trax's red eyes glowing through the window nearest the front door as he watched her pull up. "Okay, I love you, too. Down."
He immediately complied and she stroked his head, scratching the thick fur behind his ears with one hand as she as grabbed a tissue from the nearby table with the other. She wiped her face and out of habit checked the answering machine next to her phone. Her inability to use wireless devices was annoying but they'd discovered years ago that there was an anomaly to her air magic that blocked the signals. She knew Frankie was trying to find a way around it before hard-wired electronics became completely obsolete, but for now the only thing she'd been able to do for her was modify the phone's ringer so that only Kari with her inherited werewolves' senses could hea

"I'll be right there. What's the matter?"
"I don't know, but it's not good. I'm scared, Kari. I never thought I'd say this, but you need to come armed."
She threw on her clothes then ran downstairs to reload her .357 revolver. She didn't bother with extra ammunition. If six silver coated hollow points couldn't do the job then they were all in big trouble but she prayed it wouldn't come to that. She made the trip to Sky's in record time and found her standing in the middle of her kitchen, arms wrapped around herself and sobbing. Kari hugged her hard, waiting for the tears to slow.
"Something got to him, Kari. He's not Cargo anymore."
"What do you mean?"
"It's all my fault," her voice was torn with anguish. "I, I took him with me to the old schoolhouse this morning when I went back to place the aversion w
Edge of Dawn - Chapter 11Daniel was finishing the last of the shift assignments when he heard the mummers flying from desk to desk, the sudden shift to quiet whispering louder than a shout in their normally raucous office. He looked up and it took him a moment to realize that the woman talking to the desk sergeant was Kari. Stiletto heels accented impossibly long legs so eye-catching it took a moment before his brain could process the information that the rest of her ensemble was impeccable. The sophistication of the cut was not only classic but surprisingly sensual in the way it subtly accented every curve of her figure. Not even the cheap office fluorescents could dim the luster of the rich auburn hair that cascaded in waves down her back and the soft laugh she shared with the desk sergeant had every person in the department straining to get a better view of their visitor.Edge of Dawn - Chapter 113 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This

Edge of Dawn - Chapter 26There was a lot of hugging and kissing and backslapping and hand shaking and everyone treated her like another member of the family. She followed him as he carried their bags up the stairs and down one of the long halls.
"I hate that I'm putting you out of your room, Daniel."

On her first night together with Garrus, Shepard had been mildly concerned about the talons that she knew turians possessed. She trusted Garrus with all of her heart and knew that he never intentionally harm her, but there was that instinctual distrust of sharp claws near her softer human flesh. Of course she had been thinking of entirely different things by the time that evening reached the stage where his gloves came off, and then she didn't' have the luxury to think about minor details until after they had blow the Collector base to bits.
Being under house arrest had given her more than enough time to think, and Garrus was one of the happy memories she had she to stave on the crushing boredom. One of the questions those memories brought up was if turian anatomy charts and Alliance descriptions of turian talons as 'vicious natural weapons' were overly exaggerated or if Garrus had blunted his just for her.

I've recently become enamoured with the Mass Effect 'verse, thanks to a beautiful piece of Garrus/FemShep art here on DA: Mass Effect - After the Reaper by *ghostfire, and while I haven't actually played the games yet, I did do some research and fell in love with Garrus and Shepard's story and decided to try my hand at writing the 'ship.
Now, my vision for this is that it's going to be a series of short stories about Shepard and Garrus' relationship, so they won't always be in chronological order. I'll let you know in the ANs just where about it fits in the ME timeline and if the story in question is companionable with any of the others.
