Can There Be Such a Thing as TOO Much Fantasy? Can there be such a thing as too much fantasy? Can There Be Such a Thing as TOO Much Fantasy?3 months ago in Personal More Like This
Is the fantasy world over-populated? It's a valid question and one that keeps raising its ugly head in the current era of 'Lord of the Authors: The Fellowship of the Fantasy'.
Without battling out the topic of Indie vs Traditional, I want to take a moment and talk about fantasy worlds. A simple blog post can't cover every single fantasy tome to have ever graced a book shelf (or a digital market place like Amazon, for all you e-publishing gurus), but we can highlight a few.
J.R.R. Tolkien with his elves, and his dwarves, his hobbits with their hairy feet, and his trolls. Ringwraiths, a dark lord, and a powerful artefact that is a curse to all those who bear it.
George R.R. Martin with his thrones, and his games, the squabbles of men, and the treachery, futility and thick-fast plots (oh, and if you've watched the tv adaptation, there's a fair share of boobage, too).
Peter V Brett – demons galore! How 'man' (and woman!) can overcome their fea

Dear DeviantsSometimes I think we take for granted all the things our fellow deviants do for us, and we start to feel entitled and start posting rules about what we think being a "good" deviant means, like not thanking people for the favs or commenting before faving artwork. Before we start trying to govern what our watchers do and don't do, we should be grateful that we have watchers that do anything at all.Dear Deviants9 months ago in Personal More Like This
And so, here is my message to every deviant who reads this:

I love the random llamas.
I love it that you watch and fav without commenting.
I love it that you comment without watching and faving.
I love it that you say thank you for faves, watches, llamas, and more.
I love it when you use short, sweet comments like "cool!" and "cute!" on deviations
I love it when you only use plz icons to express yourself.
I love it when you tag people for memes.
I love it when you ask questions, even if they've been answered before.
I love it when you just click that little 'X' on messages without reading t
R.I.P. Harry HarrisonIt is a sad day for Harry Harrison has died.R.I.P. Harry Harrison9 months ago in Editorials More Like This
There's a note about it on his website: http://www.harryharrison.com/
For me he was one of the big names of Sci-Fi and I grew up reading his books. Bill, The Galactic Hero and the Stainless Steel Rat series are the ones that most captivated me and they're books I've read many times over. They're fun to the point of rivaling works by Douglas Adams, yet they have deeper undertones to them. As a teenager his books were the ones I'd stay up for until five or six in the morning because I just had to turn the next page every time I finished the previous one.
For many he is probably someone they have never heard of. If that is so, I strongly encourage you to get to know the wonderful works the man has left as a legacy.

Firstly, the piece you wrote for the contest was wonderful, in fact, the poems you have written are all wonderful. How long have you been writing poetry?
Gosh, thank you! Um, the first poem I still have a copy of that I wrote is dated September 1997, when I was 10. So 15 years now!
How often do you write? How does inspiration strike?
I work pretty erratically, my work is about how I feel so obviously some days there's just not a lot to write about. I've been trying to write several times a week lately because in September I am going to be joi

I always skip YouTube commercials. Always, if they give you the option to, because I want to get back to the music I was listening to. This time I didn't, as it oddly caught enough of my specific interest to keep me watching. It was of a man sketching. Separated by a curtain, he did not see the women he was sketching. Rather, he asked them questions that helped them explain what they believed they looked like. I really, really suggest watching this video. I'm glad I did, because it got me to thinking. Actually, I'm going to beg you to. Please watch it. <3
http://realbeautysketches.dove.us/ <-- Please watch it, ladies. Even you, gentlemen!
It made me think of my friends, and how they see themselves. So for those I've made friends with outside the Internet world, or even met briefly, or became friends enough with to share FaceBook contact and see pictures, this is for you. We are in a world that

So, My family and I watch went to watch the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, on July 15th at 12:05am, on my mom's birthday! It. Was. AMAZING!
There were some differences from the book, but we loved it, and everyone in the theater applauded and cheered and at the end of the movie, we all stood up and said Mischief Managed! It was such a sad, yet fulfilling experience! What a wonderful completion to something that has gone on for ten years!
If you have any love for Harry Potter, I highly recommend going to see it! It was worth standing in line for seven hours! I even dressed up!
Here's to you JK Rowling, for giving us such a wonderful thing to have in our lives! Thank you!
We'll miss you Harry Potter!
Until the next time!

What inspired you to start writing?
A lot of things, really - mostly that urge to express myself in a way that others could understand and sympathize with.
How much do you feel you've improved in the last few years?
God, that question. I can't even begin to explain how much I've improved. I came from the depths of Mary Sue OC Naruto and Hetalia fan fiction and moved on to original fiction. It's really amazing, now that I think about it.
Why do you post your writing to deviantArt?

What inspired you to start writing?
I couldn't really tell you, to be honest. I just did it, since I could. I always loved reading, so of course that fueled the fire, but there was always just some story unfolding in the back of my head, and it seemed only natural to write it out. Stephen King inspired me a lot as an artist, and I had a family full of readers that always encouraged me, but I can't think of any one catalyst that definitively got me started.
How much do you feel you've improved in the last few years?
Tremendously. Specifically the last three
In-depth guide of how I create "vectors"Before I say anything, if you're familiar with proper vectoring at all then once you've heard what I do you'll realize I'm not making "true" vectors with the process I use. This might seem a bit odd because what I do means that if I wanted to make a larger version of the image I would basically have to scale the paths I've made and re-"paint" the whole image, but I'm just doing these for fun so I make them large to begin with; the end result is plenty big for anything anyone who might use them for. For simplicity's sake, I will still refer to the image I am creating as a vector from hereon out.In-depth guide of how I create "vectors"2 years ago in Personal More Like This

I do traces as well as original art, but the "vectoring" process I utilize is exactly the same, so I'll just start off pretending I'm about to do a trace of a screencap from the show. Let's make Pinkie Pie being adorable. Here is a decent image of her taken from the

You don't know it, but your pet is actually a...One day, Phillip Buster had an idea. Not many people lived on the Earth yet, and his tribe relied on hunting and gathering to survive. Wolves were good at hunting, he mused. Wouldn't it be interesting to have them work for him?You don't know it, but your pet is actually a...3 weeks ago in Personal More Like This
He managed to get some wolves into possession and carefully put them together to have cubs. Neither Jeans nor genes were known at his time, but Phillip did know that children looked different from their parents and also exhibited different personalities. Maybe the wolves would eventually have an offspring that his tribe could use.
Genes are the blueprints of a being, how it is shaped, how it grows and in many ways even how it behaves. But these blueprints don't copy perfectly. There are small alterations, changes, and so a new animal would always be slightly different from the animals that came before. Perhaps it would have the tendency to be more playful, or it may be better at sniffing, or it may be friendlier towards other beings, such as Phillip himself.

Beta Launch: Improvements to More Like ThisHello everyone!Beta Launch: Improvements to More Like This8 months ago in Tech & Features More Like This
Last month, we released More Like This to you all, and after gathering your feedback, we've made some changes to better your browsing experience!
What's New
Browse Changes
Toggling Endless Scrolling: Several members preferred the original paging interface rather than infinite scrolling. With this change, we added the ability to switch between both modes, a setting which will be preserved as you browse.
Optimized Scrolling: We've made some improvements to optimize performance and loading times while browsing with infinite scrolling. The biggest change is that thumbnails on pages that are out of sight will get removed as you scroll, lowering the memory requirements and noticeably improving scrolling performance. Under normal circumstances this should not be visible at all; however, when quickl

Updates to Literature Appearance
We've made some changes to the way literature and Journals display on deviantART. In order to provide a more unified experience, we've updated the format of literature deviations and Journals to better display your text, as well as to optimize the reading experience for your readers!
In addition to the updated background, we've made sure that familiar tools for readers have been retained with the new layout. Readers can change the background from light to dark, enlarge the text, and more, using the buttons presented at the top of each literature deviation.

The Price of Plot TwistsPlot twists. Whether it be mystery novels, an M. Night Shyamalan movie, or the prolific father-son reunion in the Empire Strikes Back, plot twists pop up in every genre and medium of storytelling. With good reason, too. A plot twist surprises you, it makes you rethink everything you thought you knew, and it shatters whatever plot predictions you've racked up for the ride. A good plot twists enriches a story, it complicates it. A great one blows your freaking mind. The Price of Plot Twists9 months ago in Resources More Like This
I think it's the "blows your freaking mind" variety that have really pumped us all up on the concept of twists. After all, when people talk about, say, The Sixth Sense, what do they always bring up? The heart-warming relationship between Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment? Of course not! It's that reality-shattering twist (which I will not name for the sake of those who haven't seen it yet). Or how about Shutter Island? That one had a bit of a doozy as well.
We've developed a bit of an addiction, I think.
