The crowd gasped in equal amounts shock and awe as Luna assumed the form of that of Nightmare Moon.
"Evil? Ha! I was evil once. You know, you and I have something in common. I too defeated Celestia many years ago."
"Who are you?! ... What are you?"
"I am your worst nightmare*."

Because Chrysalis could defeat Celestia, Luna turns to the only other entity known throughout history to also defeat Celestia: Nightmare Moon. With Nightmare's additional dark magicks, Chrysalis doesn't stand a chance.

This was inspired by World8's image Evil? Ha! I was evil once..., which depicts a fight between Luna and Chrysalis.

"What's the matter, Luna?"
"Why does everypony still hate me?"
"Nopony hates you, Luna. I am your sister and I will always love you. The ponyfolk were overjoyed that you returned to us after such a long absence."
"That's not true and you know it! They hate me! They're just too scared to say anything for fear I'll bring about eternal night again. Why didn't Cadance want me to come to her wedding? How come no-one told me that you were hurt? Why didn't I get to go the Grand Galloping Gala?" As Luna continued, the reason for her sadness suddenly clicked to Celestia.
"Oh dear. Nightmare Moon has been speaking to you again, hasn't she?"
"... Yes. She won't leave me alone, Tia. She's in my head. She's always there when I'm alone, laughing at me. And... what she says is always true."

Finally I managed to achieve a pose I've wanted to do for months - having a taller pony resting their head of top of the smaller pony's head. You can't really see it, but Celestia is leaning on Luna; using her as a support for her front body. Equines aren't bipedal.

I thought this image of Luna looked adorable enough to post separately. I have cleaned up some of the parts that were obscured by Twilight and redrew part of the cutie mark.

"Celestia, this is Nightmare Moon. She's my best friend. Nightmare, meet my sister, Celestia."
"The Sun Princess. I've been waiting for a long time to meet you."
"Luna, what are you doing?"
"Your time is over, sister. You - and the ponyfolk - have ignored me and my beautiful night for too long. It is my turn to shine."
"Please don't do this, Luna."
"It is too late for that, Celestia. Some sister you are. Do you sit with me when I'm alone? No! Do you ever listen to me? No! Have you even seen my night?! No, of course not! It's all about your 'rules' and your 'duties'. You don't care about me! Nightmare does. She's my friend. She's going to replace you."
At this point, Nightmare Moon took the opportunity to fling a bolt of magical energy at a distracted Celestia. Harmony was broken and the battle begun.
"Your despised sun has risen for the last time, Celestia. The night will last forever."
"You will try, Luna. But I must protect our subjects. I will not let your jealousy cause them harm."

This sort of concludes the mini-story I had in my head. It began with Nightmare Comforts Luna and continued with Nightmare and Luna Stargazing. This little story ends with Luna allying with Nightmare willingly, her jealousy finally compelling her to move against Celestia.

Luna tooks too adorable with that angry expression. Even if I were Celestia at that point in time, I still wouldn't have been able to take her seriously. (Maybe I should put Luna in her pink dress and then have her try to confront Celestia? Make Celestia hide a chuckle and you probably have a perfect 'Trollestia' moment. Yeah... it's ridiculously late and I'm lacking rational thought. I'm going to do that. Yeah, it happened. Remember what I said about option D?)

This is the Luna Major version; the one in which Luna is frontmost. There is also a Celestia Major version. I created this version first.
I intentionally changed the eye design for more variation. It also fits in with the designs of earlier hugs vectors. Use the link below for versions with open eyes.
I had no idea how to position Luna's mane so it didn't get in the way. In the end, I left it like this, because Cadance can apparently hug Shining through her mane. And it's not really a hug insomuch as putting a hoof on another's shoulder.

From the front, Nightmare has such an unusual head design. Made more unusual that from the side, her head is like the other alicorns'. I don't know if this is the angle, or a different design just for Nightmare.
