Of fanon and canonYou know, a lot of folks on dA tend to use these journals not just as places to write stuff to keep folks in the loop, but as their own personal soapboxes. It's kind of annoying, really; so I tend to try not to rant in these if I can avoid it.Of fanon and canon3 years ago in Personal More Like This
But bronies, let me tell you something. You are making it so hard for me right now.
Let me start by saying that I love canon. Canon is why we're here. Without the canon of the show, we would not have come to adore these ponies that we spend so much time on. Without canon, this fandom has no base, nothing to stand on. I get that! As such, I have a healthy respect for what canon brings us with each amazing episode. But here's the thing:
I love fanon, too.
I love the depth and richness that this vast group of creative ponies manages to bring to an already amazing show. Without the fanon, I know I wouldn't be half as involved in the
How Not to Make Me Care in StoriesI'm being very specific here: this is ME we're talking about. Perhaps not you, but I can only work by what I know for now. Why a journal so soon on the heels of the last? How Not to Make Me Care in Stories1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Because this sort of thing is bothering me a lot lately. It seems many people, critics and storytellers alike, have all but abandoned the (admittedly) hard work it takes to make me care.
Sure appealing to a massive cinema buff like me is probably not the best business model, but it seems bizarre to me that the requirement is to decrease my expectations, rather then storytellers strive to improve. People get huffy when demands are made on screenwriters/directors to use their millions of dollars of budget, their top shelf actors, their state of the art special effects to try and entertain, make sense, and engage.
After years of watching movies and shows, trying to make movies, writing screenplays, reading books on films and going to film school I've come to the conclusion that I'm not crazy in a lot of my demands. Just

In my vision, Princess Celestia is apparently the most hated/disliked/disregarded pony character among the good guys in MLP:FIM. And she also receives a mass amount of false characterization and crude joking from the community.
I find it very difficult to search for her on YouTube, Deviantart, EQD, Google images, ponibooru, without stumbling upon several videos/deviations of Celestia being trollish, tyrannical, cruel, sexual deviant or just an all-out depraved monster. Of all the cartoon characters i've seen so far, i've never seen one being so fanonically butchered as Celestia is.
Here are some arguments that gave origin to all the "Celestia abuse"
She sent Luna to the moon
Now i think i understand why people are so strongly focused on this argument; specially because they think it was too much of a "cruel" fate
How to Make Me Care in StoriesThe following four qualities are not requirements by any means for me to enjoy a story in any medium, but they certainly help to let me invest myself deeper into the plot and characters. 1: The Heroes at a Disadvantage
This is a sadly dying art, but one that got me interested in storytelling at a young age. The triumph over adversity is a classic but for me always compelling story to experience, and in order for the triumph to feel earned and victorious there must be an element of risk. A lot of modern day tales seem to feel the audience will not accept a hero/heroine who is not a flawlessly skilled fighter, possesses super human abilities, or is prophesied to be the only hope. The truth is however that as 'cool' as it is to watch our protagonist cle

Question: Which Halloween is scarier? The original or Rob Zombie's remake?
The original of course. Not even most people who enjoy the remake I believe can claim it's scarier.
The remake adds backstory, loads of gore and nudity, but it skimps on atmosphere.
Its too excessive to be frightening, where as the original is so minimalistic it became iconic, primal.
Lets take a look at the budgets...
Halloween (Original): 320,000
Halloween (Remake): 15,000,000
The original Halloween was until recently the highest grossing worldwide independent film ever made, and I think there was a grand total of two drops of blood in the entire production, no CGI, no flashy sets or pyrotechnics or really huge name actors. All it had was a fearful premise, an eye for subtly, and pervasive suspense.
Compare the original Star Wars to the prequels. One is lau

Seven Deadly Movie SinsA lot of people have taken me to task about my objective positions, reviews, and...well...rants on films. Nowadays it seems improper for a critic to be honestly critical about something, specifically if said thing is in any way popular. After-all its our duty to not hurt other's feelings by saying what they hold dear is in any way flawed.Seven Deadly Movie Sins2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm not being sarcastic. This is roughly the argument I keep hearing from many on the subject.
1: Every opinion is equal so why bother trying to promote your own at the expense of others?
2: Every production you criticize is loved by or was created by several human beings so why spit on them?
To answer in order.
1: In terms of filmmaking, NOT every opinion is created equal.
2: You can criticize a production without criticizing people who enjoy it or were involved in its creation.
Without criticism you end up without any guidelines or means to improve. This is the chief reason I see Hollywood as having gone downhill: because people

lately I've been thinking about tutorial - how to quickly improve the scanned work in Photoshop. In the pool you showed some interest. Why I want to do this? Because I frequently see and read under yours works or in comments, that you have a problem with this. You feel that your work doesn't look aesthetic because you can't fix dust in the scanner or you want to do small corrections on your work. I want help you with that ^3^
However when I was thinking about this I saw one tutorial was not enough , because lineart , pencil work with a shade or color work should be treated differently when we clean it or want to improve the quality. Therefore decided I to do 3 simple tutorials which I will show you in short time . They will be about scanning lineart or page comics when we wish to achieve clean white and black lines, pencil works where we want to keep all the shades and color works where we want to reproduce the colors as in the actual work.
But that's not the end Fir
10 Things I No Longer Want to Hear In MoviesTo be a cliche doesn't necessarily mean that the idea is unusable. As humans we tend to think in stereotypes to better assess things quickly so living up to expectations can make people feel more comfortable. Also some things live up to stereotypes in certain cases. Yes it's cliche for someone to want to save someone else they only just met at the possible cost of their life, but the news oftentimes carries stories of extraordinary heroism from ordinary people.10 Things I No Longer Want to Hear In Movies2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The exception doesn't always prove the rule and the trope is a useful tool when used properly.
There are some lines which have worn out their welcome, almost never contribute anything to a story, and are used over...and over...and over again.
They're place holders. The writers themselves probably doesn't understand them fully, just adding them because they heard it somewhere. Unless the context is right, unless the story needs it desperately, I would be very happy never again to hear...

1: Everybody Loves the New Dictatorship
This never ceases to be hilarious to me. A big evil corporation or totalitarian regime takes power and the first thing they do is outlaw all primary colors, build tons of ugly buildings, hire armies of jack-booted thugs in face concealing helmets to patrol the streets...and apparently people couldn't be happier. Sure they whine about their taskmasters all the time but nobody attempts to rebel in public and said stormtroopers are so dedicated they will chase the hero EVERYWHERE and risk dying in horrible ways just for the honor of missing at them with their guns. In real dictatorships there's plots all the way up to high military officials to topple insane/ex

How many times has someone silenced you with a simple offhanded reiteration of 'That wasn't very tolerant'?
Strange how tolerance sometimes becomes the byword of intolerance: namely censoring opposing positions without any due consideration.
Now not everyone uses 'tolerance' in this way. We all grew up learning tolerance was a good thing and that people should be accepted just the way they are. Its a good thing, definitionally, that you seek to act in a moral and friendly fashion and encourage that behavior in others by calling their attention to speaking out in anger or being unjust to others.
'Everyone is entitled to their opinions' is taken at face value as undeniable fact, yes? Of course. We're all well bred people who wouldn't dream of imposing ourselves on others.
Or would we?
This 'tolerance' and 'equality of opinion' stops dead in the mind of many for people w
Power Levels and Personal StrengthI was requested to re-imagine Dragon Ball Z. How do you make the fantastic boring?
1: Provide zero context, that is to say no reason to invest time or interest in something.
2: Focus on impersonal details and abstract concepts that are left vague and shallow.
3: Make the set up so formulaic it ceases to seem spontaneous and becomes predictable.
Maybe pure, uncut escapism floats your boat, but to me I've always been a glutton for the steak as well as the sizzle. As pretty the veneer is, if there's no substance to me it becomes flavorless and flat.
But the issue here is that not only do a lot of storytellers nowadays seem to miss out on this, they seem to actively pursue the glitz without the meaning behind it, effectively making the most magical, terrifying, wondrous things boring.
It's done with fair to middling intentions.

My Review and Thoughts on the MLP Season 4 Finale Well, I just finished watching "Twilight's Kingdom" and now for the first time ever...since this episode was special (Mainly because of it's villain)...I am now going to give my thoughts on the matter that will address what myself, and possibly others who may agree, think to what this episode is to us.My Review and Thoughts on the MLP Season 4 Finale2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Just note, this is just my thoughts so no need to defend the episode or anything if you like it a lot. What I am specifically going for is the villain: Tirek. He first appeared in the G1 MLP episode back in the 1980's, and is considered to be the first and darkest villain of them all. The fact they brought him back into G4 is both a good thing as well as a bad.
Tirek has a strong reputation for what he is and what he has done. From what I saw in "Twilight's Kingdom", these are my thoughts:
I honestly thought the episode was excellent and that Tirek seemed almost as evil as his G1 counterpart...as well as to the Tirek I used back in

Alright guys, it's finally time.
Time for my big "What My Cutie Mark is Telling Me" picture.
I KNOW I'M BEHIND ON THAT WHOLE FAD SHUT UP I'VE BEEN BUSY.
So, anyways, I'm looking for five pony OCs to be in said picture.
Why five? Because those five plus Spectral = Six. Get it. Get it. Math is fun.
I will draw a separate shaded/detailed background picture of each OC and will also draw a group one.
Let me lay down some rules regarding OCs.
1. NO ALICORNS. Come on, guys, you should know where I stand on the whole Alicorn debate.
2. NO OVER-VERSATILE CUTIE MARKS. This basically means the cutie mark can not stand for more than one special talent.
3. NORMAL CUTIE MARKS ONLY. What does this mean? No cutie marks that are like "Her special talent is being herself" "His special talent is raising the moon" Spectral's cutie mark is a ghost. That stands for ghost hunti

Since E3 is about to start tomorrow, they showed a gameplay footage of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for the Wii U. Now they I have seen the game clearly? All I can say is....IT IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I saw the Like bar on the video? Over 1,270+ people disliked the video. They were NOT happy at all! In fact, they were going as far as to make petitions to get Sega to cancel this game! So apparently, Sonic fans are losing their minds over this game and it's show. Here are some of the hate comments:

The Whole Niku WhiteSocks CollectionWell, this is it. Thank you for enjoying this character, but it's time I move on. It was fun having this pony part of the fandom, at least. Eh, not many care about him since he's an OC, and he was paired with Applejack. Like I said, it's all in his head. He doesn't really pair up with AJ. He finds out the truth that Applejack only sees him as a brother, not a lover. Will Niku ever find his true love? Who cares? When Exposition Gets Out of HandWe all remember the iconic image of the scrolling text from Star Wars. When Exposition Gets Out of Hand2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Name it. The classic films, the prequels, the video games...any media all has that distinction of the climbing yellow words in a receding pyramid telling us a brief recounting of the backstory before and something of the characters we're soon to see. It works in context, especially with the nostalgic style of an early sci-fi serial and that bombastic, memorable score to punctuate it.
But here's the problem for me...
It set a REALLY bad precedent.
If you think about it Star Wars doesn't need the opening crawl in any of its films. Why? Because all the information you read in that brief moment as it flashes upwards is revealed in the film to follow in it's entirety. Episode 4: A New Hope begins by saying the Empire is bad and the Alliance is good. If you didn't read that you'd still know it before the credits rolled. Likewise the crawl talks about Princess Leia on a secret mission and Darth Vader chasing her.
A Real Batman CriminalI caught a handful of news reports about an event that happened in Aurora, Colorado. During the midnight premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises", apparently some psychotic shmuck saw fit to enter a local Cinemark Theater, armed to the teeth with body armor and at least four weapons including two handguns, a shotgun and an assault rifle decided to tear the place up, shooting everyone there, including those who tried to escape. At least twelve were killed, and more than three times that were critically wounded and hospitalized. The suspect, identified as James Holmes, was taken into custody.A Real Batman Criminal2 years ago in Personal More Like This
