Tenten stood on the other side of the window partition, one hand pressed up against the cool glass. Her other hand was a tangled mess of splints and bandages. The sharp throbbing of her broken fingers almost obscured the burning itch of the sutures across her back. The burning itch of the stitches almost distracted her from the rhythmic pulse of the clock out in the hallway. The ticking of the clock was almost loud enough to cover up the muffled noise of the respirator in the ICU. The regular, soothing hiss of the respirator, every five seconds, would never be enough to take her mind off the fact that somewhere, inside that snaking mess of IV lines, monitoring cables, catheters, and bandages, her son struggled for his life.
She stood there and stared. Tenten wasn't quite sure when it happened, but sometime in the past three hours, paranoia had set in. She was convinced that if she looked away, that if she blinked, the machines would fail, her son's last breath would

"So Naruto..." sneered Obito. "I thought you said you weren't going to let even a single one of your friends die?"
The Uchiha let his gaze drift away from the obnoxious Jinchuriki cradling the dead Hyuga boy, and took a moment to survey the battlefield. Riding atop the Ten tails, Obito could have been a god surveying the four corners of the earth.
Not that he took any gloating pride in that. Not that any of that mattered. Nothing mattered. There was only one reason that he was still alive, one reason that he forced his broken twisted body up every morning. There was only one reason for all the death and terror and horror and war.
It was all for her.
Rin Nohara. Her smile haunted him still. Obito would be the first to admit that the dark powers that kept his body moving put him in the category of 'no longer being human.' He accepted that the horrors that had happened to him had dashed his mind

Inoichi Yamanaka bombarded her with questions, but Sakura ignored him. Her mind was filling with images, voices, and smells as well as her mother's hugs, father's stories, and Ino's childish ranting. She even remembered watching Tsunade Senju from across the street; the little girls were hiding behind a pungent garbage dump. Ino's plan was still clear in her mind.
Tsunade had detected them very early on, but acted as if she didn't. Sakura grimaced at the memory; they thought they had outsmarted an ANBU leader.
There were many questions buzzing in her mind; reality mixed with illusion, conversations from different timelines blended together.
"Lord Yamanaka, my apologies," she bowed with deference," I don't know where Ino is. We were separated last night at Tsunade Senju's safe house. Sand platoons stormed in and took everyone."
"Do you remember anything about that platoon?" his eyes were no longer accusing and Sakura saw him for what he truly was, an anguished fat

Sakura adjusted the cloth covering the lower half of her face; it was tight and almost suffocating in the humid passage. She tried to relax the bindings but the knot had been tied half-hazardly. Nervousness had always been a weakness of hers, it foiled her mission at the palace, but she was adamant this time would succeed. People should not be hurt because of her weakness.
Dust fell periodically as people paced on the floors above. Thankfully the hidden passage was empty. Sakura was holding her breath and moving as silently as she could, given the circumstances. She couldn't help the shivers even under her thick clothing; the chill in the passage reached to the bones and could kill if she didn't move fast enough. Winter had already come fast.
She stopped when the sudden sound of a door opening reverberated through the passage; it sounded so close, but there no nearby door on this side

Sakura didn't expect Outland to be the way it was; all her childhood stories described something else entirely. Everyone loved to tell stories about how it was poor, filthy, and home to the lowest form of human. Maybe they just wanted to feel good about themselves, living in rundown and weathered houses in the poor districts of Middle Town, maybe no one ever stepped into Outland to really know, and all the tales became just that, tales.
Or maybe her childhood memories were filled with fabrications, it did feel that way sometimes; a hazy fog coming in and out of sight.
Outland was an uninhabited forest, with endless rows of trees. The strong winter wind had carried away most of leaves. Sakura was filled with a sense of dread by seeing the dark tree trunks and their creaking emaciated limbs. Snow lay in stark contrast to the sea of trees and marching humans. The weaker ones had already disappeared from sight, whether taken in large caravans or killed, she did

"Everyone, settle down," Uchiha Fugaku ordered as the chaos spread throughout the meeting room. In mere seconds the mood changed from rational planning to bloodlust, with Itachi being the cause of it. At least four of the family elders moved closer to the captive, and behind them others were drawing out weapons. Floor boards creaked with the sudden weight shift, dust rained from the ceiling.
Sasuke was held back by two strong relatives, his father long gone from his side. Things were going to turn out badly if no one took control. He didn't know how these meetings were organized, but this one was starting to look like a riot.
"That's enough," His father growled and approached the center of attention, "Take him away, right now, " and for a moment time froze, then the guards slowly moved back to protect their designated Elders, and Family soldiers stepped closer to the shadows. One by one, people took their seats around the table, and Fugaku nodded with

"Where do you want to start?" He asked hesitantly.
Sakura had given this a lot of thought over the last two days, she knew that Naruto would come back for a favor or two, or so Master Tsunade had predicted. Their suspicion that his visits will continue proved to be accurate.
"Tell me about the ANBU. How did they start?" she smoothed her skirt before sitting down. They were still in the library though the sun was setting and the light was growing dim in the cluttered room.
"It's a really long story and honestly we don't have time for it now," he finally put down the contract with resignation, signing it took at least an hour because he had to argue over every sentence, and Sakura had to firmly stand her ground otherwise he would have erased half of the contract.
She raised her head and opened her mouth to protest, "listen-"
"Please listen to me, I don't have much time and we have to do this before a catastrophe happens, you have to trust me on this Sak

The sun was starting to set, another wasted day. Sasuke was feeling restless. His abrupt departure from the spy house added more to his edge. Everything looked bleak and depressing. He was the reason Sakura was taken in the first place, if he'd been faster that day, they wouldn't be in this predicament.
"Why are you running? Home isn't going to disappear anytime soon," The younger Uchiha asked in annoyance. The adrenaline rush from the attack had finally left his system, and he was feeling depleted.
"That I'm not too sure about, brother,"
Sasuke did not want to give his brother an advantage, so he feigned acceptance. Everything was changing all around him. Actually, there was a better way of describing it; the veil that shrouded his eyes was finally lifted. Things had always been covered in illusions or presented in a different way to the younger Uchiha son; his father's aloofness, his brother conflicting behavior, mother's cryptic hints about their

Sasuke closed his eyes and tried to shut out the noises: Itachi's clock, the rain, people moving in the corridor outside and even the girl's breathing.
Sakura, he reminded himself.
She wasn't willing to give them her name at first, but a cup of tea made everyone feel better about their current situation. Itachi ordered him to go back to his room and rest, but Sasuke ignored the "brotherly advice" and sat on the first chair in sight. His brother smiled at the gesture and asked him to sit tight, they were out of medicinal tea and only Itachi would be able to get more without arousing suspicion.
Sasuke gritted his teeth in annoyance. He had to suppress his dislike for being in his older brother's room. He avoided it for so many years and would have gladly continued had he not needed some answers.
He took a deep breath and opened his eyes, taking in the scenery of the great garden being drenched by he

The search party went on for days. From what Sasuke could tell, an emergency distress call was sent to all field operatives, at first it was just the house residents doing rounds, but then all sorts of people appeared at the headquarters for assignments. He met a few servants of the Hyuuga and Nara Families: gardeners, cooks, chamber maids, even guards; so Tsunade's reach easily covered most of the Kingdom. He was very impressed with the fact that this was simply her retirement plan. Sasuke shuddered to think what the actual ANBU force would be like.
For now, it was best that he played along and gather as much information about this underground society as he could. He didn't know what the requirements for joining the elite corporation were, so the best option would be to find the ultimate prize; Sakura was important, and he must be the one to find her. Also the guilt at mistreating her before they were separated was gnawing at him.

Sasuke gritted his teeth and backed one more step, despite the fact that there was very little space to retreat to begin with. Exploding lights continued to flash through the window behind him.
Fuck, for every Sand bastard that went down four more appeared. Pretty soon, his entire field of vision was filled with homicidal soldiers. One more step. The floor boards creaked loudly. He stepped carefully as they were slippery with blood; most of it was from fallen enemies. He was barely able to stay awake, but he did all he could to keep his body moving. His right hand held a serrated blade though he could not remember where it came from. Every time the blade withdrew, a painful strain on his arm and shoulder muscles quickly followed.
"You're the Uchiha?" A deep voice asked, Sasuke couldn't see its source, his vision swam. He didn't reply, more out of apathy. Uchiha or not, he was not going to give up. His wounds had reopened and he already

Heavy pounding on the door sounded as Sakura laid her head on the pillow to sleep. It was far too early for Master to come home, and most of the other organization members came back after sunset. Her eyes snapped open and she got to her feet. Through the window, a nightmarish scene unfolded before her eyes: a sea of torches and the shine of metal objects. Screams filled the night as people ran wildly, she could not tell which side was which, or if there were any distinct markers; such as clothes or weapons or symbols.
It was chaos. Limp bodies that were strewn everywhere lay untouched by the raging torrent of the crowd.
She felt the building shake under her feet, followed by a sick crunch. Yet the building still stood in one piece. Ino materialized behind her and grabbed Sakura's shoulder for support. Her grasp was weak and she almost let go from the pain. After a silent communication, they were about to head out of the room when something caught their

More time had passed as artificial light flickered outside of Naruto's comfortable cell. He paced the small space while measuring every corner. What chilled him was not the amount of blood spilled earlier, he was used to the sight, but the cold indifference in the Prince's eyes as he left the Arena. He had killed a man without reason, and without showing the least bit of remorse. The attendants had all gone pale, and some of the guards too. Naruto was trained to take a life only when he was on missions, or in self defense, and in those cases the targets were always armed and dangerous. To kill outside of what was necessary was forbidden.
One more sand soldier passed up and down the hallway between the square cells, he glared at Naruto and ordered him to sleep. All the other prisoners were sleeping, so he should do the same.
Naruto grimaced, but accepted the order. He dropped on the low bed and closed his ey

"Now sit down and be a good boy, ok?" Bright blue eyes stared into his own, "Please Naruto, this is important. Can you do this for me?" A concerned crease of the forehead told him that this was a serious issue.
"But I'm always good," Naruto whined, he turned his head to glare at the silver haired teenager standing at the back of the room, "he's lying Dad,"
"Kakashi is on your side, he's here to make sure you're safe," his father replied kindly, "I only have one meeting left, I promise this is the last one," A weary smile crossed his features. He relaxed his shoulders and slide down into a sitting position to look Naruto in the eye, "Then we can have dinner together, and I will tell you a story,"
The little boy shook his head violently, "I don't like him, he's mean!" he stuck out his tongue, and saw anger cross Kakashi's eyes for a brief moment.
"Promise me you'll behave, just one more hour, please?"

The bastard had done it. They were so close to escaping with the new information, then he conjured the brilliant idea of causing an explosion and attracting every guard in the vicinity, even though the impact caused him to fly into a tree. Naruto laughed at Sasuke's misfortune as the blonde whipped out two sharp knives and prepared for the oncoming attack. The soldiers on duty came rushing to the scene, and then four more stepped out of a distant outpost. The odds weren't too drastic, but there were other factors to take into consideration; the box of volatile explosives, someone possibly sounding an alarm, as well as the Sand agents beyond the wall the bandaged man could have backup soldiers.
The best way to deal with these risks is to start taking out opponents as they come for him, one step at a time, and as quickly as possible. The Uchiha looked dazed as he shakily got up to his feet. Naruto cursed, he would have to save the day on his

The rescue mission was considered a success as well as a failure. By the time Sakura heard the sound of the second door opening with Naruto rushing in, the older Uchiha brother was still declared missing. Two people had to force the door open from the outside, Naruto and a mysterious dark haired man who held a remarkable similarity to the Uchiha Family.
As for Itachi, it was impossible to tell if he had been rescued, killed, or taken to a different location. His holding cell was darker than Sasuke's but the amount of blood and gore was more drastic, including a dead guard at the door. Sakura left the room as quickly as she entered; this place had a hellish atmosphere that she could not handle.
Moments later, Naruto came back with his shoulders sagging, "Is he still alive?" he was subdued.
"Barely, we have to get him to Master," Sakura eyed Sasuke's wounds critically. There were all kinds, ranging from fresh bleeding stab wounds to less recent long thin

The house had been thrown into utter chaos that morning. A hurricane would have been easier to deal with, or so Naruto mused. Tsunade had sent almost all of her agents, not even waiting twenty four hours to pass since Sakura's disappearance. To the Master, an extensive search party being conducted throughout town to recover Sakura was an absolute priority.
Naruto took off as soon as he suspected the girl was missing, he didn't expect the old woman to give him orders, though he willingly stormed out of the door into the violent weather anyhow. Armed with only a thin orange jacket, he shivered all the way to a clothing shop to "borrow" a heavy black raincoat. It wasn't on display or openly visible, and besides, the shop owner would not notice its disappearance for a while. Naruto resolved to bring it back when he found Sakura, silently thanking his Mentor for all the stealth training that he was put through.

The room was deathly still, Naruto focused on sounds in the night but he heard nothing. His feet silently moved over the worn floorboards as he closed the distance between the door and the bed.
"Window is sealed shut," Sakura told him, "All windows on the third floor are like that," She was standing just beside four paper stacks, which looked undisturbed, her presence alert despite exhaustion from the training.
Barely there, the sound of a lock moving reached Naruto's ears and he left the room as quickly as he entered. He had no idea how many intruders were there, and if worse comes to worse, he would have to fight and attract attention to this building.
All for that idiot, he cursed silently while speeding down the corridor, he almost crashed into a door as it suddenly opened, and Ino's face peeked through, looking sickly pale.
"What the hell--?"
He didn't hear the end of her exclamation, since he was half down the stairs by then. Anoth

She instinctively fell back as the knife whipped through the air next to her. No matter how civilized this man had appeared before, he had no qualms about killing Sakura. Or was this simply a ruse to scare her?
She never found out, since he grabbed his bag, doused the last remains of the fire and strode outside. Sakura froze in place, refusing to move, not even to inspect the stinging sensation on her right cheek.
"Are you coming or not?" He had the nerve to ask casually, his calm voice trailing from outside, "Your Master must be worried sick about you."
A furious look crossed her features and she got up abruptly. Sakura reached for the first rock in sight and ran after the white haired demon.
"How dare you!" She hurtled the rock, missing him by a good distance, but that did not stop her, she picked up another rock, and threw it. Again and again she repeated the exercise until she got near enough. The last rock would have hit him square in the back had he

In her mind, Sakura struggled to get dressed and prepare her master's mission reports; surely the old woman would be angered by the delay. One of these days someone else would have to help with the reports. The girl tried to lift a heavy blanket from her chest and suppressed a sneeze which led to a heavy bout of coughing. When a throbbing sensation hit her lungs, she stopped any attempt at moving and tried to numb the pain. Another strange sensation made her mind snap with clarity, she was wearing a very soft silk dress. Where did that come from?
There was a brief moment of disorientation as she tried to take in her surroundings. She was in a silent room, the barred window to her left signaled the deep dark before dawn. Her eyes tried to adjust to the darkness but there were no candles in sight. There was one door only, and a few indistinguishable pieces of furniture. The room didn't feel cold at all, and the bed she slept in was very warm and comfortable, not to
