Cultivating Your Drawing SkillsI believe drawing skills are never innate: when someone is a natural, what they really have are remarkable observational skills and the ability to apply them in their case, through drawing (it could just as well have been espionage ). Drawing skills can be cultivated by anyone able to use their minds and hands. There are basically only two approaches to do this: theory (+practice) and observation (+studies).Cultivating Your Drawing Skills7 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Theory is a structured, organised approach, learning from someone more experienced who's laid it all out for us in a course, book or tutorial.
Observation is an organic, unpredictable approach, learning directly from the real world around us and gradually deriving principles from it.
Alone, they are both incomplete; trying to work with only one of them would be like trying to walk with one foot. Studying lays down a solid foundation, which remains abstract and limited until observation brings it to life with details and real-life application
Please Pants Responsibly (Paper Notebooks FTW)Please Pants Responsibly (Paper Notebooks FTW)9 months ago in Personal More Like This
There are two ways to write a novel. Plotting (you make an outline, a plan, a roadmap if you will, and then you sit down and write it) and pantsing (you write "by the seat of your pants, throwing caution to the wind). So when I get asked if I'm a plotter or a pantser, I'm all like er, uh, hold on, let me? Pantser? I think? But I kind of, um, do planny things?
And it gets kind of awkward because in these inarticulate moments I have managed to confuse everyone including myself. And probably spilled a drink.
In recent discussions, however, I've had a bit of a revelation, silly as it is. I've realized that I -- like many writers -- am a plotter/pantser hybrid. And perhaps what I'm doing is something we could call Pantsing Responsibly. And, maybe, just maybe, I could share some of my responsible pantsing tips with other writers. Starting with paper notebooks.
Anyone can find a notebook. If there isn't alread
Go See Frankenweenie!Frankenweenie isn't doing so well in the box office. Most likely due to it being stop motion AND black and white on top of that. Tim Burton has put his heart and soul into this film. It's been one of his stories, one of his babies, for years (back since the early 80s) and probably in his head WAY before that. So for a good 30 years or so it's been a part of him. The fact that people can't appreciate different forms of animation other than 3D animation is scary.Go See Frankenweenie!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
So the thoughts running through my head are......
ARE PEOPLE INSANE????? GO SEE IT!!! (if it's playing in your country) It's really a good movie! The animation is top notch. It's a really refreshing animation to see nowadays. I mean, who doesn't love a story about a boy and his dog? And it's not geared towards little kids either. It's for all ages (perhaps even more geared towards the older audiences) the ones who could appreciate the homage it does for classic horror films and the ones who remember the bond of their first dog t

The timelapse is finaly done. :DFirst I have to say that before I started this project I really had no clue of how enormous it was going to be and how much time and effort it would take just to complete a 3 minute timelapse movie. The timelapse is finaly done. :D1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The total project took up 280 gb of storage before rendering and editing, needless to say it is a monster amount to process, Ive stayed out many nights until morning and often at mornings to capture what i find to be beautiful about the place I live in.
In one of the clips the wind shifted the camera just a bit, but I just had to keep the clip cause the aurora behaved almost like disco lights would do, strange but beautiful.
Soj ( also the name of the movie ) which stands for Sřrkjosen is a very small town in northern Norway, and my goal was to show what i love about this place, and even though it has been some miles of walking and cold nights I`ve loved every second of it, when you are tired and beat and the aurora makes its presence you are awake as never before.
So I hope yo
From artist life - getting a job as an illustratorHey there! I didn't plan to write about that topic but that's obviously what you are interested in the most, isn't it...? I wasn't sure whether to elaborate on this for a simple reason - I never ever in my life looked for a job. Nope. It came to me. I need money and job appears, tadaam. As I am from Poland, I work mostly for Polish publishing houses but I do draw for other companies too. Some things might not work out as I say, since every company has different politics. For example: Polish publishing houses are not very fond of people with an Artist degree. Same in software companies which also hire computer graphics. They don't like artists with diplomas because they "always know better" and it's very hard to work with them. It might be different in other countries, where educated artists has a different image in society. I personally believe that degree
On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo
Shanghai NOEspecially for beginners it can be really hard to say "No". Sometimes you get a job offer with the tiny problem of microscopic payment (if any payment at all) or you are already IN a project and get tons of change requests and end up with an hourly rate that makes you weep. And mostly not in enjoyment.Shanghai NO6 months ago in Personal More Like This
Or you get the puppy-eye look for "a favour" and in the end you end up doing things you didn't really want and spending weeks of your free time on it. And it leaves a sour aftertaste because you think "Dang, why didn't I...?"
Yes... why haven't you?
I have to admit the "we need ten million changes" problem is still a problem I face mostly on a daily base. It's okay if you get payed for it. Gods, I'll do a million changes if it gets payed and if these changes are reasonable. :iconengelszorn: and I experienced such a "we need changes" problem and in the end it was a mixture of fine negotiation, making a lot of compromises and doing (bearable) changes. But within boundaries. Because you rea
The Effectiveness of SimplicityI like to draw and look at rather complex works of illustration. Perpectiveful pinnacles of technical achievement, etc. However, I watch a good number of artists who use simplicity to great effect. Whether it be representing more complex objects and figures as simpler forms, or just a philosophy of "less is more," I can easily be just as impressed (if not more so) with the understanding and implementation of simplicity as I get with more complex works. The Effectiveness of Simplicity6 months ago in Personal More Like This
Here's a short feature of some examples of works I've seen recently that got me good. Enjoy!
This work by radsechrist looks complex (such as the third image which I'll be talking about a bit here,) and to an extent it is -- however upon closer inspection, the actual details and construction is quite simplified, even crude. And it's fantastic. The artist shows such a vast understanding of how and where to place detail that matters,

Alois is a boy who wears short shorts. Easy enough, but that's what you would think. When cosplaying as Alois, you want to make sure that your shorts are not reaching your knees. They have to be at least mid thigh or shorter. As for his stockings, they go above his knee and never touch his shorts. You'd be surprised how many people just wear black pantyhose.
Alois's ring is also on his right index finger, always~!
Now this is just a petpeeve of mine but when the shoes are just regular high top heels it bothers me. He wears boots!

Many tears. More tears than you ever shed. Was it them? Were they the reason you did this? More tears.
Every day. Every night. Every single second of every day.
More guilt. What about your best friends? They're not going to care. Right? No. What's the first thing that will go through their mind when your principal comes in and tells the class that you're not alive. While your best friend sits there in tears. That girl that you'd smile at but never talk to? She's now crying. The boy who used to kick you under the table just to annoy you? He'll be shocked. He'll be devastated. He'll blame himself. What a

Children's Book Illustration would be defined like any type of picture or decorative work produced for books specifically intended for a youthful audience. This article tend to give people a large idea of what is children's book illustration. I'm not going into details, but speaking a bit about what we do (illustrators) is another step to recognize that our job is an entire form of Art.
Also, this article will be added to the library of our deviantART group childrensillustrators
A short History of Children's Book Illustrations.
+ The beginning.
Although children's literature had its beginnings in the early seventeenth century, with books intended to teach rather than to amuse, it was not until the mid-eighteenth century that books intended specifically for children books began to emerge. By the nineteenth century there was an established market for children's books

I want to say first of all that sometimes I get people asking, or rather complaining, “why does it seem like the comics always get a better score? This group seems so focused on comics. What if I just want to draw pictures?”
Well, that ends up tying into narrative illustration, which is a pretty hard thing to do right if you’re used to drawing single shots of your character against a plain, white background. Most people end up doing comics because it seems easier right away: the characters can talk, you can set the scene, it doesn’t require a little description at the bottom...
But, even comics require some know-how to pull off really well. It’s just harder to pull off illustrations in this story-based environment, because comics make it a little less apparent when it’s not doing a very good job at telling that story.
But, I’ll get to comics second.

And no, I'm not linking you to this comment. Fucking forget it.

Uh oh...shit starts here.
Before I go into my opinion (it will be long, as most of my explanations) on this, while I will never change it, and do not care how 'controversial' it is, I understand I cannot, and therefore, will not, stop others from engaging in the aforementioned acts/using the following products. You are entitled to do so, after all, with Free Will, but that does not mean I must weakly submit to it, and believe and support it.
Well at least you said that.

Antitroll RepellentOK, this is gonna be my last post. I'm gonna share some wisdom I've learnt over the years (and hopefully redeem myself after all the trolling I've done). Today we'll learn how to deal with trolls. This guide'll show how to stop trolls from trolling you without having piss you paints or get angry (and become troll bate).Antitroll Repellent1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Yeah that right, everytime you get angry at a troll, you're feeding them with the attention they desiring. They go out of their way to get you pissed off. They'll say the most offensive comment possible to mankind just to make you get out of your seat and wave you fists in anger. Throwing abuse back at trolls will only kindle the fire. When I's writing My Immortal, my life sucked. For some bizarre reason I craved insults (which's more bizarre since I's getting insults thrown at me in my offline life), hence writing My Immortal. I didn't insult people that much (besides calling flamers preps and torturing them with my god awful skills at literature). Nowadays trolls are

I don't want to make December 28th a big deal for myself. I don't want to make any more tribute art or cry in my room or post any pictures of him. I'm done with that. But I feel it is imperative that I at least openly reflect on how big of an impact he made on my life for once, and I feel that now is an appropriate time.
Of course, like everyone, Jimmy's death took a toll on me when it happened. I'd been listening to Avenged Sevenfold's music since right before the self-titled album came out, and though I never paid too much attention to the members when I first started enjoying their music, I spent a very long time grief-stricken because he was always the one I liked the most. It took me a couple of months for the realization to really hit me that the "funny-looking quirky drummer guy that does those great voices and was the brains behind all my favorite songs" was gone completely, and I became even more u

Level 1: The Adequate Troll
This particular species of troll is the only one that actually shows to have brain cells lodged up in that space between their ears. Unlike their brethren, they do not use memes or associate with anything of what people often think of when they think of the common internet troll. No, these people actually use sensible wit to drive people into corners while sharing an argument, all the while intentionally trying to leave the other user pissed off.
They are quiet, more subdued, but sometimes pluck off the 'attention whore' tendency of those below them. If on Deviantart, they might dedicate their entire gallery to merely making stamps that will undoubtedly piss people off, knowing th
