Creature is inspired by fiddler crabs, spiders, scorpions, grasshoppers, monkeys, bulldogs, and more.

I find it fun to do something straight from the mind rather than working from real images.

Made from many, many watch pieces, including gears, watch plates, spring barrels, watch winding stems, watch jewels, and clips. The lightbulb is a Christmas light. His spine is a watch band.

55mm front to back, 36mm wide, 25mm tall.

Popper
created March 23, 2013

Popper was made with recycled watch parts and a christmas light bulb.

In order to create the legs, eighteen watch stems must be cut in different sizes to simulate the organic appearance of real arthropod legs, which vary in size and shape between species. Each of these segments is carefully arranged into a leg and soldered at the joints with lead free, silver bearing solder.

To make the body of Popper, four very small watch plates are soldered together with watch stem posts and brass watch train gears, forming a sort of chassis for the head, bulb, wings, and legs to rest in. The wings are cut and sanded watch faces, attached to the body by watch strap springs and stems. The head is made by cutting, sanding and shaping a watch dial, to which eyes made from brass wheels are soldered. A blue christmas light bulb is very carefully removed from its metal base and soldered to the body chassis by its lead wires.

After the body is made, the leg and wing assemblies are carefully arranged and attached by soldering. The legs and body are then manipulated in order to make the creature stand properly. All joints are then resoldered for added stiffness.

Popper measures 70mm wide by 44mm front to back by 25mm tall.

All creations made by A Mechanical Mind are one of a kind, never to be reproduced exactly. All parts are soldered, never glued. Each sculpture comes with a 3” wide by 4” tall glass display dome with wooden base. Sculptures are not toys and should be handled sparingly, as their parts are tiny and delicate.

Mechanica was created with nineteen different recycled watch stems. Each stem was snipped into the correct size for a "bone" in each finger, and each bone was soldered together with lead free silver bearing solder to produce a finger. When all fingers were created, they were soldered together onto a watch plate. After the hand was formed and shaped into a clawlike grasp, it was soldered to a black watch face. This is a very special and one of a kind piece, never to be reproduced exactly.

Mechanica is 18mm wide and 21mm tall. It comes on an 18" antiqued silver plated chain with links measuring 1.7mm. Longer or shorter chains can be made to order, so let us know in the checkout section if you require something different.
