Just install this amazing new browser script written by rotane, which not only shrinks the thumbnails back to a reasonable size, but also gets rid of the awkward light-background problem for wide deviations.

Goodbye, CV ^hat!Hi everyone! I'm back to being a `senior member. Today my term as the mod of the Digital Art galleries has officially ended. It's been a great year serving as a dA Community Volunteer and I have been able to feature so many wonderful pieces as Daily Deviations. Thank you every one of you who sent me fantastic suggestions!Goodbye, CV ^hat!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Speaking of DD suggestions... the end of my term obviously signals that I am no longer accepting any. My unread inbox note count right now is 1,789, the majority of which are DD suggestions, far more than I could ever hope to feature even in 2 years... I simply got too many!! I apologize if I did not get to consider your suggestion while I was still a CV, but please let it be known that I will be doing my best in the next few weeks to reclaim my inbox, and I will forward any suggestions that I think are particularly remarkable to the new Digital Art CVs. (As of this post, MalKnox is still on, so send suggestions to her!)
Thank you again everyone.

Selkie: The Story. (no spoilers)Well I keep finding myself explaining various plot points or origins every time I post a new selkie picture and corresponding vague blurb, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a central place where you can read up on the story, if you like. The idea is that I'll update the story here when I upload a new illustration, and fill in major plot points which aren't getting covered in the picture, so check back if you're interested.Selkie: The Story. BEFORE I START, I will answer once and for all this question: "Is this from Ondine/Secret of Roan Inish?" Not really, this story is as similar to either of those as they are to each other: they are all from the same mythology, but this series is about characters who do not exist in another selkie retelling. Here is some reading on basic selkie mythology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selkie

“When I left high school, I had all my plans to go to college, but I had no money. And I decided then, the best thing for me to do is not worry about getting money to go to college — I will educate myself. I walked down the street, I walked into a library, I would go to the library three days a week for ten years and I would educate myself. It’s all FREE, that’s the great thing about libraries! Most of you can afford to go to college, but if you wanna educate yourself completely, go to the library and educate yourself. When I was 28 years old, I graduated from Library.”

So spoke the recently departed Ray Bradbury, a seminal (possibly the seminal) American fantasy & science fiction writer. Today, aspiring sci-fi and fantasy writers study his novels and short stories as their core ed

this is me following the example of some very brave users commenting on the recent changes of the site. Let me start off by saying that this journal is not supposed to be a hate speech, it is supposed to reveal concern based on observations I've made over the past weeks.
As we all know, presenting unannounced change to a huge crowd of people is difficult. Opinions will be all over the place, criticism will be voiced among all kinds of feedback, be it positive or negative or even neutral.
To me, people's reactions to the changes are not only because change is uncomfortable at first or because the new design doesn't meet with their personal taste. Not this time.
Their reaction is a valid criticism, precisely pointing out how the changes of the community affects its users in a negative way.

Taking (Digital) Art to the 'Next Step'Note:Taking (Digital) Art to the 'Next Step'2 months ago in Art Features More Like This
I am by no means an expert - digital artwork is a weak point for me! But this was originally a response to a forum post by :iconapril1999: that :iconsimple-minds: asked me to put into a journal, so here ya go A lot of what I talk about is based on what I know from photography (so not a 'How to' tutorial), but I think the principles discussed bellow are translatable.
Deviant Art is a fantastic website for creating art, sharing it and getting advice. However it is very easy to get lost in a crowd of other artists all doing the same thing. These are some tips or things that I've noticed that make an artwork stand out to me:
Start thinking of more of the "stories" behind your artwork.
This doesn't necessarily mean making an OC or a comic, or anything like that - But having an idea of what mood or feelings you want the work to convey will give you a much stronger final product. Then focus on how to implement that story and

Few of us have been unaffected by the economic mess, and many are preparing for worse to come in 2013. In the US half the politicians are on holiday while the other half play chicken right on the edge of a fiscal cliff. Meanwhile, the UK's Prime Minister moronically grinned through a speech about how much better it's all getting. To which the rest of the UK collectively face-palmed.
I could go on, but I'm not actually trying to depress you all with the frustratingly stupid politicians, greedy bankers and crazy wars... believe it or not.
It's times like this I am reminded why us artists are among the most fortunate people on the planet. For one things artists are already poor and starving, so we'll ride out the financial BS. Plus We have the o

What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

For many of us, the first “art gallery” to command our attention (and constant, even daily, monitoring) in our
lives existed within the pages of the local newspaper. It was called “the movie section” and its ever-changing movie
advertisements were like little frames that rarely contained less than pure magic for young imaginations.
The Film Poster has existed since the earliest days of silent movies and the pulse-elevating excitement of the
first sight of an upcoming adventure, action, or sweeping love story that we might have only “heard good things about”
still packs a psychic punch throughout movie lovers today.

It's back! With the goal of bringing a little cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the deviantART Holiday Card Project connects deviants from around the world and applies their tremendous artistic abilities in designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.
In past years, the Project has received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 1,000 deviants from 50 different countries/political regions. Cards were then divvied up and distributed in-person by deviantART members to local Los Angeles, CA hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for hospital staff members to hand out to patients.
The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who submits a card will be given a free one-month Premium Membership to deviantA
