[Tutorial] Making of Kasper On The BeachUPDATE: An outdoor lighting video tutorial is here.[Tutorial] Making of Kasper On The Beach3 months ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the render. There are better ones, definitely, but there are worse; and what I am about to explain will hopefully be of help to those who are still confused about skin and lights.
I loaded the Ultimo Paradiso product from DAZ3D via the "Build Island" and "Few Plants Only" scripts (I may be getting their names a little wrong). Most materials I did not convert, just the ocean (to the DAZ Water shader, with the aqua color added to the glossy color) and the Island itself (so that I could add metallic flakes to the sand). If anything, this ends up looking less realistic than the character even after I added SubD to all the meshes that are visible close up. It wasn't really made to be seen this close. I deleted the sky dome to use DAZ Studio's Sun-Sky.
The amount of geometry in the scene doesn't slow down the render much, b

This is the most important phase of your production and often the most neglected. Most of the worst renders completely skip this step and dive straight into disaster.
You are lacking a purpose and intended audience
Before even coming up with an idea, it's good to think to yourself "Who is the story for? Why am I doing this? What do I really want to do?". A lot of people skip this step, thinking it's unimportant, this usua

Lighting and Texturing
The light seems to come from everywhere at once
In many 3D packages, under the lighting toolset, there is a button called "Ambient Light". Every time you use this light, a little part of you dies inside. There is no example in the real world of anything that is lit from all sides at once. This is a cheap trick that used to be used back before lighting was accessible and able to be used realistically, and looks something like this:

Dante's Inferno, What's the Worst that Can Happen?Dante's Inferno, What's the Worst that Can Happen?3 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Oct 17, 2012 by techgnotic
Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

Here is the tutorial on YouTube.
Here is a .pdf version.
This is for those of you who are looking at the interface going, "Now what?" This covers how to convert existing shaders and how to set up lighting for your render.
This is a text version that, while different from what I'm saying in the video word by word, contains the same information.
To use this you need DAZ Studio 4.8 Pro or later.
Part 1: The Environment and Camera Settings
Before we get started, we need to check the environment, camera and render settings.
The Render Settings tab has an Editor and an Advanced section. Advanced is where you check or uncheck your CPU and graphics cards. I render with just my cards most of the time, and if you have good cards with lots of CUDA

Iray Surfaces And What They MeanI've updated and corrected this article based on DAZ's documentation. You should read that if you want more information. This will continue to be more of a "plain talk" breakdown.Iray Surfaces And What They Mean6 months ago in Personal More Like This
Let us begin with the different types of shaders from the "Base Mixing" dropdown at the top. Choosing one of these will hide or gray out some options and reveal others.
The Iray shader behaves as though it has three layers: The "base" layer, the "metallic flakes" layer on top of that, and the "top coat layer" on top of that. It is possible to turn off the top two layers and not use their settings, but the ability to use them is a property this shader has that 3Delight did not. This makes using shaders made for Iray very important when rendering to get the best look in Iray!
PE: Importance of AnatomyThe importance of anatomy.PE: Importance of Anatomy3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Understanding anatomy is crucial to many aspects of your art.
You'll notice that anatomy is essential for drawing. It becomes difficult to accurately draw a complex pose, or even a simple one, if you don't understand what's under all that skin or fur, or even bark. Knowing how everything fits together is important.
Once you notice where that certain muscle is, shading and form become much more accurate and more natural. Knowing why the nose and eyes fall where they do make it much easier to draw from memory, and nail that natural look you were going for.
Learning the anatomy of the subject you're going to draw is quite important, and will definitely help you on several levels.
It's also easier to drawing sequences of movement. One will know what connects to what, and how they move. What is possible, and what isn't. (Range of motion)
Drawing people and other animals can be intimidating. Once you have a solid foundation, it's much easier
Why Magnets Over Morphs?** Why Magnets Over Morphs? **Why Magnets Over Morphs?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I suspect my recent poll made no sense to a lot of people, because I didn't explain why would anybody want to use Poser magnets to shape figure bodies when they already have morphs to do just that. I started using magnets to customize Poser figures over 2 years ago, and things became "obvious" to me when I was doing it for so long. So now it's time to explain things, so people can take a more conscious decision to whether or not they want to learn this method. ^__^
First of all, I assume you already know how to use morph dials to change the shape of a figure. Those that affect the whole body are called "Full body morphs" (FBM), while the ones that only affect a portion of the body are called "Partial Body Morphs" (PBM). Those are fundamental terms when using morph dials. Now lets discuss morphs and what we can do with them.

The Capture vs. The Pose
portrait of a WW2 vet...
When a subject poses to have his or her photograph taken, the subject tries to project a message about himself or
herself by how he or she “poses”, by the attitude of his or her body language or facial expression.
If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,
the facial expression “directed”, it is the photographer who is intending to communicate a message.
In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.

So... what if something else had happened instead that prevented the comic from being updated? This is where you come in. Draw what you think could have happened that prevented the comic from being updated.
There could be all sorts of possibilities, from Thaxter and Grimm (the main characters) being kidnapped by the Russian mafia to medli20's arms falling off and taking ages to grow back. It's all up to you; get creative! :icont

Gone are the days when my only option in Poser was to render with Firefly. Nowadays we have high-end 3rd party renderers available that offer a new level of realism that was never possible before. In this article I will discuss Octane and LuxRender.
Same Poser scene rendered in Firefly, Octane and Reality/Lux with a single HDRI image
First of all, let's see the pricing:
* Octane: $380 includes stand-alone renderer + integrated Poser plugin.
* Lux: free renderer + $60 Poser "Reality 3" plugin.
Now let's see the specs:
- 100% GPU render (extremely fast).
- Requires high-end video card with at least 1Gb memory.
- Renders inside of Poser itself.
- Preview your changes as you do them in Poser.
- 100% CPU render (slow), with option to include GPU raytracing (still slow).
- Does not require high-end video card, but high-end CPU may help compensat
Protect Your WorkFor many artists, art theft is a frustrating reality. No matter how we watermark, logo, or constrain the resolution of our work, there are instances where artwork will be reposted, ripped, or used for commercial gain without credit or compensation. For some, this can be almost flattering, to know that there are those that like your work enough to steal it. But, the fact still remains, that your work has been used without permission, and for no gain of your own.Protect Your Work1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I have been a photographer for four years now, and throughout that time I am always learning. Part of that education is around copyright, and how to protect my work. The collage above is a brief representation of some of the ways my photography has been stolen. Some were edited without permission, event advertisements, included in a calendar, manipulated to advertise jewelry, sold on canvas, for promoting a cosmetic brand, or even for music videos.
