Mythical or Magical the Crowned Princes of Horses
It’s a common error to refer to unicorns as “mythical” creatures, since they actually appeared in Greek natural histories, rather than mythology. Unicorns were thought to be very real, albeit well–hidden. They are possibly the purest symbolic essence of the cult of the “Majestic Horse,” usually being all white and reputedly only being in danger of being captured by virgin females. Whatever their magical origin and possible reality, they have long been captivating creatures in artists’ imaginations.

looking back to about a year ago i had doodled a very rough sketch in my sketch book of a girl walking an octopus. and when i say rough i mean rough. the sketch itself was nothing more than a study of contrasting silhouettes. i was drawn to the play between a very rigid character and a squiggly one.
i had forgotten about that sketch until i heard about a steampunk t-shirt design for www.welovefine.com. i thought that this design might have a chance so i went ahead and finished it off. well it got alot of attention and i am happy to say that it won the competition. the shirt started to sell

It's been such a long time since I've done a feature just for the heck of it, without any purpose whatsoever other than showcasing things I love. I've been so busy on here with young-photo-club, Death-Chicks, GetDailyDeviations, and my own Group Spotlight features that I haven't been able to do a feature of random things I've seen and adored here on DA! So here it goes!

Tutorial Tuesday: ArmorOkay. So this one is a special request. And I love drawing armor more than anything else so I'll happily do this tutorial.... The only thing is that unlike drawing a hand or a human face, there isn't a definitive right or wrong. Armor in many cultures was an artistic expression as much as it was a practical piece of equipment, and as such armor varies a great deal depending on time period, technology, culture, and personal aesthetics. And given such I could probably write a book on all the different ways you could design armor for your characters, I'll just scratch the surface here with major things you want to consider when designing your characters armor, and then after recommend you do some research on how armor appears throughout the ages and cultures, As Roman armor looks vastly different compared toTutorial Tuesday: Armor2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Devious Journal EntryYou know you've really found someone when can talk to them about anything and nothing. It's not even to pass the time y'know? It's an actual conversation that you enjoy. The company is all that matters and showing each other how much you care and are invested in them. It's just something so special and unreal because you feel all this happiness, you feel this sense of everything coming together. You don't worry about today, or tomorrow. You don't worry about what homework you might have or what you've got to do immediately because at that moment, it is just you and this one person. Nothing else in the world matters.Devious Journal Entry2 years ago in Personal More Like This

5 Art Selling TipsWhile I used to see "art sales" simply as bonus money coming in on the side, over the past few years it's become enough of an asset that it justifies an art dealer, record keeping, insurance, and taxes at the end of each year. It's currently 25% of my total income, and that has a lot of impact over my work. And just like storytelling, design and page flow--abstract principles that keep my career afloat daily--art sales also deserve to be studied, theorized, and understood.5 Art Selling Tips2 years ago in Personal More Like This
These are guidelines, not rules. And while most of them usually work for me, they might not all work for you, so keep in mind that my market might be different than yours. Because not only do we not draw the same, we probably have different sorts of buyers.
1. Don't stay on a book for too long
I find that doing mini series of 4-12 issues is optimal for selling art. If you spend a year doing one-shots or 2-3 issue minis, you'll be hard for buyers to keep track of because it's too infrequent. And it's hard to make an i

Art Analysis #10: Dance by Alphonse MuchaBy Alphonse MuchaArt Analysis #10: Dance by Alphonse Mucha5 years ago in Personal More Like This
This analysis copyright Scott M. McDaniel, 2009.
I ended up last week by saying I'd do a Maxfield Parrish piece this time, but I lied horribly. The Parrish piece I'd picked is Daybreak, one of his most popular and well known. It's based on the principles of Dynamic Symmetry. I need some more time to work through that, so I'll do it three weeks from now. Instead, I'm going to do Dance by Alphonse Mucha. It's part of a series of four panneaux based on the muses (some of them, anyway). Aside from Dance, there are (from left to right) Poetry, Music, and Painting. This Art Nouveau style may have come before the term "pinup," but hey, these are pinups.
You can see the common layout and circular frame motif. I'll concentrate on Dance, but keep in mind that they're a set designed to be displayed together in a room. Mucha was one of the first t

The Top Reasons for Manuscript RejectionOne of the things that the literary agency I work for does some weekends out of the year is teach seminars on query writing and the first 5 pages of manuscripts (which, basically just means the first page of the manuscript). The seminars last only a day or two, but aim to help writers improve their queries and start of their books so that they have a better chance of standing out in the ever-growing slush pile. Since I know many members of the literature community here aim to one day be published writers, I thought I would share our sheet of the top reasons for manuscript rejections. Please note: These are in no particular order. The Top Reasons for Manuscript Rejection1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
Wrong genre Agents have guidelines for specific genres that they like to represent. Just like you and me, they have certain genres they love and certain genres they don't. Sometimes, it's not because of personal preference, but because they don't know the market for some books as well as other agents who are very passionate about

A Moment of Zen
From a person simply closing his or her eyes for a moment on the subway ride home to the annual gathering of over 2 million pilgrims traveled to Mecca in the annual Hajj, the rites and rituals of prayer can be as personal or as ritualized as one’s spiritual self might require. The stopping for a moment’s meditation in hopes of a revelation as to how to proceed is a universal “medicine” we all need sometimes.

I consider Sulamith Wülfing being one of my most beloved illustrators of all the time - ever since I found her works. What do I find especially exquisite in her pictures? The colours she used. The way she used to draw and paint hands and cloth. Generally.
Who was Sulamith Wülfing?
She was born in 1901 in Elberfeld, Rhine Province of the Kingdom of Prussia, as a child of Karl and Hedwig Wülfing. For her further existence and creativity, important was the fact that her parents were Theosophists (as wikipedia says: Theosophy refers to systems of esoteric philosophy concerning, or investigation seeking direct knowledge of, presumed mysteries of being and nature, particularly concerning the natur
Mayan Warrior Queen UnearthedIf you are familiar with the great warrior queens of history, then you are probably thinking of Boudicca of the Iceni, Zenobia of Syria, or Tomyris of the Scythians. Sadly, the New World civilizations are lesser-known to most people.Mayan Warrior Queen Unearthed2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I am a total nerd for pre-Columbian civilization, and that's why I totally squee'd when I spotted this news article today about the discovery of the tomb of the ancient Mayan warrior queen, known as Lady K'abel.
Lady K'abel was queen of the city-state of El-Peru-Waka', from 672-692 AD. The Mayan civilization was not a singular kingdom, but a collection of independent city states. Lady K'abel was married to the king K'inich Balaam, and apparently held the title of military governor.
From Discovery.com News:
"Archaeologists in Guatemala say they have discovered the 7th-century tomb of Lady K'abel, one of the greatest queens of classic Maya civilization.
The most powerful person in Waka' during her life
