Common Misconceptions: Traditional ArtFirst of all, hello! It's been almost a year since I contributed a blog post to this lovely group so I want to say hi I'm back folks! I have a lot of artsy things to share with you all that I've learned (and am still learning) so hang on tight! While I was thinking what to write as my first topic, I decided to kind of go back to the beginning as far as our thinking as artists goes in the creation process. I've come up with a short series called "Common Misconceptions" just to debunk some myths and misguided trends that are so often part of what we experience as we grow. This first "Common Misconceptions" topic will focus on traditional art.Common Misconceptions: Traditional Art3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Traditional is better than digital because it takes more talent and skill
WRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONG. Did I say that was wrong, I'll say it again for emphasis WRONG! Like all mediums, digital art is simply different than traditional art in the same way photography is different than fi
OCT 101 (2012) EDITDisclaimer: this is not a personal attack against any OCT's, oct admins, or conduct of oct admin teams in general. These are observations, thoughts, and tips that I felt should be taken into consideration when one decides they want to run an OCT in hopes that it makes things a little easier for people.OCT 101 (2012) EDIT2 years ago in Personal More Like This
FURTHER DISCLAIMER: every oct is different, someone doing things differently from the norm is not bad. These are all merely tools and guidelines meant to help. I've heard a lot about personal attacks being made using both my posts about OCT's as a way of bullying and pushing around the admins of other Tournament groups, and I do not condone it in the slightest. I'd like to apologize for anyone that has had that done to them.
For those who need more information!
"What is an OCT? An OCT, or 'original comic tournament'/'original character tournament' is a sort of contest in which an artist enters a character.
That character is paired off against another artist's charact

Japanese 101Konnichiwa Minna san! Watashi wa baka desu! Watashi no shumi wa e wo kaku koto desu! Yoroshiku onegaishimasu! （＾Ｏ＾☆♪Japanese 1013 years ago in Personal More Like This
So okay some of you got jellin of my fine japanese language desu ne.
I thought of why not teach my lovely watchers speak japanese?
Okay let's start with the simple one. If you want your sentence to sound like japanese you need to put 'desu' at the end of each sentences. Now before we start using 'desu' let me tell you first what it means. It would be stupid if you're using the word that you don't know right? Okay the word 'desu' comes from the latin word 'Canius Femina' meaning bitch. For example I love you desu (I love you bitch).. Tehehe kidding aside. Okay the meaning of 'desu' is really hard to explain but basically it's a polite modifier or it can also mean " It is ", "Those are" , or "I am." or whatever.
Now that you know the word desu let's use it in a sentence.
Fuck you desu. V(=^･ω･^= )v

Before you throw that pity party read thisBeing in touch with your weaknesses is important in order to grow as an artist, but are you so hung up on what you can’t do well that it’s holding you back? I'm not talking about the intermittent (or frequent) attacks of complete blockage, or even lack of inspiration, but full out pity parties. Before you throw that pity party read this2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I’ve seen far too many people on dA who post exercise after exercise, writing in the artist comments that once again they’ve failed, they’ve read hundreds of books, studied the masters for so many years, and they still cannot draw a photorealist rending of a man’s head. First of all let me say that I highly respect “self taught” artists and I’m not discouraging anyone who chooses (or must) go that route. However, setting realistic goals and finding your niche is extremely important. Let me say this: not everyone will be able to paint like a Baroque period artist! But that doesn't mean you can't be a painter, it just means

These are some of the works of my wonderful watchers! Faving this journal might help these get seen too .

If you don't accept criticism, you won't improveThis statement is, to be blunt, incredibly stupid. I see it repeated around DevianART and, as bad as it is hearing it from the general public, I have to laugh uproarously when I see it coming from an artist. I usually try to be more diplomatic, but sometimes my inner Snape just can't be contained. If you don't accept criticism, you won't improve3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the reality of the situation. A person who is building a set of skills can improve without feedback of any kind. Through trial and error, a human being can identify their own mistakes and, with honest work, rectify those mistakes. To say that this is not possible is so counter to reality as to be absurd. I could give thousands of examples but I'll just say this: if it were not for an individual's ability to invent skills from within themselves we would have absolutely no skills to pass on to other people.
Is this a good reason to reject any kind of negative criticism or criticism in general? Does this mean that criticism is useless? Absolutely not. This

My art and comic book (http://www.rom.ac) is now famous around the world because people share the images I create through blogs, torrents, wallpapers and re-posts.
I allow everyone to download and view my paintings and comic book for free on the internet. If someone who likes the digital version of my painting wants to buy a printed version, they pay me or a publisher who's authorised to print my work, which in turn cuts me a % from the print sales of this painting. At the same time I can put up a couple of nice, non-intrusive commercials into my online exhibitions that I myself approve of, and that will pay for the rest of my expenses.
I believe the same "Free digital content" policy should apply to all digital media arts. If the public likes the content, they WILL buy a solid copy of it from the artist. There are people who will love, cherish and support the ar

I have just recently received the opportunity to become the "Science Fiction and Space Art" Community Volunteer Gallery Moderator here on deviantART.
I am looking for "Science Fiction and Space Art" deviations to feature as Daily Deviations, and you can help.
If you know of any submissions that you think should gain more exposure and be Featured as a Daily Deviation,
and they are "Science Fiction and/or Space Art"related, send me a DD Suggestion via note.
I have info on my front page regarding how to suggest a DD if you have any questions.
I would prefer suggestions for artists that have less exposure and little to no previous DD's,
but I am not against awarding a Daily Deviation to worthy art from a more well known and decorated artist.
I simply want to try to focus on putting a spotlight on lesser known artists that have amazing art to share, so that their work ma

This journal has been a long time coming and for that, we sincerely apologise. There are mitigating factors for this delay but, at the end of the day, they are excuses. So without wasting any more time, let's lay out our judging criteria for those who wished to know!
Our judging is separated into two sections; Effort, and Storytelling. Effort is graded out of 5, while Storytelling is graded out of 10.
Here is the in-depth requirements for grades in Effort:

4/5- The artist’s entry has demonstrated a great amount of effort based on their skill level.
3/5- The artist’s entry has demonstrated an adequate amount of effort based on their skill level.

Henry David Thoreau
By :icontechgnotic: techgnotic
I I always thought of Thoreau’s comment as simply a word game — clever but ultimately false at its core. A Valentines Day without a Valentine means being alone and alone means being unhappy. It’s taken many years to finally understand the truth in Thoreau’s words. We are never so alone as when in the company of loving family and friends, our Valentine companion held tight in our arms – but knowing we are lost, unfulfilled in our dreams and visions, and untrusting in our own inner counsel. Now I hope to one day seek companions
