Noting a steady increase in unorthodox methods of salvage collection preferred by the more 'enterprising' capsuleers, Outer Ring Excavations dusted off blueprints for an old search and rescue vessel dating back to their first forays into outer ring. Instead of weapon hardpoints and associated data processing, a highly specialised electronics platform was developed to enable detection of manmade objects with poinpoint accuracy against the background noise of dense asteroid fields.
ORE has taken this design a step further in line with recent developments on other vessels, and added salvaging hardware similar to that found in the Noctis industrial.
ORE Industrial skill bonus: 5% increase to scan strength of probes and 5% increase in tractor beam and salvager cycle time per level
Title: The Duchess of Diamonds (for Alice in Wonderland Contest)
Medium: Green and Magenta Ink (done with old-fashioned dip nib pens). Inspired by Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland; the costume is done in large, bold patterns to resemble the style of Burtons Queen of Hearts and her entourages costumes. Likewise, the background is a bold, simple diamond pattern in keeping with the simple, thematic backgrounds for single character posters for the movie. A (much simpler!) photo reference of myself posing for the piece was used.
Description: I love Alice in Wonderland too much to have passed up this contest. I imagined myself as Lewis Carrolls Duchess character (who was abusing pepper and her baby in the book). The Duchess didnt make it into the film, but I felt she would fit well into Burtons version. My version of her does not resemble John Tenniels famously ugly Duchess drawing, not only because Tenniels version looks nothing like me (whew!), but also because Carroll himself did not detail her physical attributes and I felt at liberty to imagine her as myself clothed in a Burton style.
My version of the Duchess is the mysterious, somewhat sinister, somewhat mad Duchess of Diamonds, a cousin to the Red and White Queens. She is rarely seen with her baby (which is lucky for the baby, at least) or her timid, shrinking husband, as she spends most of her time admiring and indulging herself. She is slightly older than the White Queen (in fact, there is some dispute as to whether she is actually the White Queens dizygotic twin, rather than a cousin), and also a contender to the throne of Wonderland. However, the Duchess willingly relegated herself to the background by relocating to a distant desert location in the Eastern outskirts of Wonderland many years ago. This was not due to any graciousness on her part, but merely because she was willing to abandon any position of power as long as she was free to imbibe in a life of indolence and luxury. Not that the White or Red Queen have ever been able to completely forget their diamond-adorned relative--she is part of the same mad family, after all, and may develop a fanatical desire to attempt to claim the throne in the future (like in a sequel!). In the meantime, the White Queen will be sure to maintain the generous stream of bon-bons (laced with pepper, of course), diamonds, and caterpillar-silk and mome-rath-brocade dresses to the decadent Duchess in hopes of placating her indefinitely.
After a long time far from drawing and from deviantart (all the content of my gallery is from 2007) I thought that it could be fun to draw something for this contest, also is my first contest! Hope you like it and good luck everyone!!
I´ll try to upload a more finished version before the deadline!
