REMINDER: Photomanip Tutorial Challenge!Welcome to our official tutorial challenge!
Another tutorial challenge? YES! Keep reading!
Part of "illumination" is learning, expanding our horizons, and helping others learn as well. So, this time we are not going to USE tutorials. Rather, we are going to MAKE them.
What you have to do
Your job is as follows:
Take a critical look at your gallery. What are your strengths as an artist? What are you really good at doing? Are you known for your light and shadow? Color use? "Glow" effects? Do you do skin well? Can you paint really well? Are you a master of masks? What do people compliment you on?
Create a detailed tutorial, with examples, of how you achieve this effect or do this technique. It does not have to involve the creation of a new deviation. You can explain how you did this effect in an old deviation or just with stock without making it a full deviation.

Photomanipulation Week here at projecteducate has been phenomenal, and that is entirely thanks to you, our viewers, and to the community members who made it happen. Our community wrote most of the articles; I just posted them. Our community interviewed many, many people and answered what had to have seemed like endless questions about how they do their stuff. And do you know, of the many people I asked, only one or two were unable? People contributed in spite of busy schedules, poor health conditions, other projects, and other competing demands because they knew this was important. I cannot thank you enough.
I wanted to show you the sheer number of people (well over 40) who participated in this event. Every one of these people made a significant contribution. Please, everyone show some love to the deviants who made this week possible (and then keep reading; more good stuff coming below this list):

Photographing crafts is not as daunting as it seems. For those of you out there with amazing creative streaks in you, it isn't actually that difficult to take it one step further and put the effort into snapping your wonderful creations. It just takes a little planning, a camera and some creativity.
Rule Number One
Never ever ever ever ever Photograph something on your bed. Ever. I mean it! Your bed is for sleeping, and er, other things. But definitely not for placing your well constructed craft item upon, pointing your camera at, and pressing the button.
You might think I'm stating the obvious but seriously, the amount of people who think they'll just pop their item on the bed and take a picture...is..well..I don't have the statistics but there are many of Us!
Rule Number Two
Stay away from your cluttered up shelves and bits and pieces. Put your craft i
Breaking in to Lit!IntroductionBreaking in to Lit!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Literature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.
If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of you. With writing, it is not quite the same. The effort the author puts into the work can only be appreciated if readers put in their own effort to read the work. The gratification is not instant, which is one reason the lit community is so close knit.
Those who do have large followings often also comment and read quite a lot of work h

What is Fractal Art? i could copy something straight from wikipedia...or get one of my well versed fractal friends to give me a technical answer but....thats just not my style..
I dont really understand the math behind fractal art. I dont want to. I just want the tools to make beautiful images. Platinus once told me a painter doesnt really have to know whats in the paint or how the canvas was made to be able to create beautiful work so I live by those words. Stock and Resources UpdatesLETS TALK ABOUT STOCK "REQUESTS"Stock and Resources Updates3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Every year we get excited, eager, passionate new stock providers entering our small but growing community, and every year these new stock models in particular get targeted by a small group of "requesters" Those of us who have been on the site for more than a few years recognise the types of "requests" I'm talking about and know to absolutely avoid them at all costs, but its something that I've seen more and more regularly over the last few months, and its definitely a concern.
There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

Current dA submissions guidelines define "Fantasy Photomanipulation" as photomanipulation that focuses on a fantasy theme. We have therefore set out to speak with our fantasy constituency and gain a better understanding of how they see and define the complexities of fantasy photomanipulation.
We all know of dragons, wizards, sorcerers, witches, griffins, magic, fairies, fauns, and all other mystical and magical beings. We learned of them through stories, art, movies, and games. The fantasy genre has become increasingly popular because of movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and games like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "World of Warcraft," not to forget fantasy wr

Project Educate: Basic Photography TerminologyPhotography TerminologyProject Educate: Basic Photography Terminology4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
This is a term that refers to the way the lens blurs the image and the aesthetic quality of that blur. Some lenses cause the image to blur that is pleasing to the eye, whereas others blur in a more unpleasant or distracting way. It is considered good practice to have the subject of the image in focus, while the background is blurred. Bokeh occurs in the part of the image that lies outside the depth of field and photographers sometimes use a shallow focus to make the out of focus regions more prominent.
Depth of Field
This refers to how much of the scene is in focus. In portrait or macro photography, it is better to have a shallow depth of field and keep only part of the image in focus, as opposed to landscape photography where you'd generally want a larger depth of field and keep everything in focus.
What is Traditional Darkroom? What is Traditional Darkroom? What is Traditional Darkroom?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Traditional Darkroom is where it all began. It started in a world where the word 'photography' didn't yet exist and the art of creating images of reality with light and chemicals sat somewhere between science and magic. Did you know that the mathematicians Aristotle and Euclid describe pinhole cameras in the 4th and 5th centuries?
In the early 1800s, artist/inventors like Louis Dageurre and Henry Fox Talbot (among others) experimented with ways of fixing images using chemicals, including silver compounds, following exposures on materials like glass and metal, lasting from several minutes to several hours. By 1840, Talbot was creating negative images using the calotype process and John Herschel had invented the cyanotype process (where the term 'blueprint' comes from) and created the first glass negative in 1839.
In the middle part of the 1800s, the wet plate collodion process be
PE Abstract and Surreal: IntroductionIntroduction: Defining abstract and surrealPE Abstract and Surreal: Introduction3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The term abstract comes from the Latin word abstrahere (to draw away) and refers to the concept of abstraction. In abstract art it means that the artists uses a visual language of form, color and line to create an image which is almost free from any references in the visual world. Related terms are nonfigurative art, nonobjective art and nonrepresentational art.
In abstract photography the actual subject doesn’t matter much – it’s not important what you see but how you see and feel a picture. This is why abstract artists often refuse to reveal the subject of their photographs or even the used technique. They prefer not to distract the viewer from the deeper concept of their artwork. However, a lot of abstract photographers c

Darkroom on dA is a tribute to the traditional, involving chemical developing and printing techniques which have barely changed since the birth of photography, a symbol of the modern, making use of technological advances in digital processing, and a whole lot of amazing and beautiful things in between.
While the majority of Photography galleries on dA are subject-based, Darkroom is technique-based. Photographs using Darkroom techniques are generally accepted in the other photography galleries too, but if you wish to categorise your Darkroom photography submission based on how it was created, then Photography > Darkroom is here to allow you to do that.
If you're not a photographer, or you arrived on your photographic journey at a time when digital was in full swing, you may have never shot on film, been temporarily blinded by walking into daylight after hours spen

Have you studied Photography? I'm intrigued to know whether or not a qualification in Photography has made you a better, or indeed a worse photographer. Or has there been no change? This week, The Photography Blog asks whether or not a Photography Degree is worth the paper it's written on. Graduation in any field these days doesn't mean that you'll immediately get a job in your desired area. Not these days. So is it worth embarking on study related to photography when in the end, you could get to the same place without the paper stating what you are capable of? Photography is one of a small number of job areas where what you've done speaks higher volumes than whether or not you're
