Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing AutumnFor many Photographers, Autumn is now officially here and is one of the most exciting seasons to capture in terms of colour, change and vistas. Early morning mist, late afternoon sun, orange, red and golden hues - Autumn has a lot to offer in many countries. If you're like me, Autumn often arrives all at once and it can be tricky to know how to make the best of the season before it's over. A couple of days of high winds and rain can ruin the best Autumnal captures by ripping the leaves down before you've even got the chance to snap - so it's great to be prepared for the season.Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing Autumn3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Leading lines are particularly useful. Yet so many people quote ' Look for leading lines...' or 'You've captured the leading lines here perfectly' and really do we even know properly what they are? The purpose of a leading line is to draw a viewers eye into the photograph and then on a journey - through it. Think of it as a visual narrative. They can be intentional and ind
Texture Your World ContestTell us the story of your world in textures!Texture Your World Contest3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
We are surrounded 24 hours a day by objects that have texture, they may be smooth or bobbly, old or new, bold, bright, shiny or dull. You might see a texture every day and never notice it until you start looking. Do you sit at a desk that's textured, or pass an interesting tree on the way to work or school?
We want you, in the form of a triptych (thats 3 images forming a larger image see example here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triptych ) to tell us the story of your textured world. Each individual texture should stand on its own, both as a useful resource and as a cohesive part of the whole story. What story you tell through your texture triptych is up to you - but they must be textures that tell a story of your world in some way.
There are 3 categories for this contest, each of which you can submit to twice.

Film, Animation and Flash Mini-Contest!Hello folks! So this month is Flash, Animation and Flash month for the ArtHistoryProject.Film, Animation and Flash Mini-Contest!3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
So me and SqueakyToybox have been discussing about the idea of having a joint contest! We struggled for a while to find a good theme that would apply well across these mediums. So then we thought deviantART is full of members across the world. Even myself I'm from the UK and SqueakyToybox is from Australia so we're literally halfway across the world from each other.
So we thought a good theme to set you all is:
We would like you to create a piece of work using animation, video or Flash and we will award prizes for each gallery! So we will have a prize for a winner and runner up for film/animation and the same for Flash.
You have until the end of this month, February 28th to send all your work in and we'll announce winners shortly after! Now we appreciate that's not exactly a lot of production time for this sort of wor

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”
Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy georgewjohnson's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

Bring your Type to Life
This may sound abstract at first, but to keep the theme as open as possible, I choose a rather abstract title. There are many directions in which you can go. You could choose an anthropomorphic direction, where you breathe life into letters and give them human or other animate characteristics. Another route would be to create the letters out of living objects, such as plants or animals.
Which direction you choose, maybe even a third or fourth one, does not matter. What matters is that your letters are brought to life!
What kind of letters you bring to life, words, glyphs or sentences, is 100% up to you. This contest has a more visual approach, so you will not be judged on the creativity of the meaning you choose to give to the letters. However, don't rush it! Even one letter can appear completely different than another. Be wise with the letters, word
Project Educate: Being a People PersonSo you've got the equipment, you've got the top notch camera, the lighting, the studio, the backdrop and even the perfect weather - everything you need for a portrait photography shoot right? Wrong. The key behind all photographs that contain a living and breathing subject is to have the natural look. Just like the key to a conceptual shot is having the idea, the key to portraiture photography is having the eye. Co-operative subjects help too!Project Educate: Being a People Person3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I have especially found in the past, that people develop a pained and strained look on their face when the camera is pointed in their direction. Interestingly enough, it happens more often at Weddings. The bride and groom quite often develop the look that they might have when they've just finished writing out the cheque for me to photograph their big day...
Then, quite suddenly one day, I got it. It was when a stunning bridesmaid at a wedding lifted her hands in front of her face and squealed when I clicked the camera in her

This week the general theme of the article is Infrared Photography. You may know it well for its vision into a dream like world where the trees appear to be fluffy candyfloss and the grass is blue or Orange...Infrared is not as far away from achievable as you might think. This week some wonderful Deviants have shared their infrared views and art to try and help us understand the technique a little better. I rather thought it was time that the infrared community on deviantART had a bit more recognition too!

PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be
FASHIONABLY IMPORTANT: The ModelThere are a great number of things which are required for a fashion photograph to be successful beyond just the skill of the photographer, many of these are obvious and many aren't.FASHIONABLY IMPORTANT: The Model3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Today I'm going to talk about the importance of models and a little bit about using them to successfully improve your book.
The right model can make a shoot - the wrong one can break it. Every photoshoot is a collaboration between model and photographer - often with others as well, but always between those two. If it isn't then it will fail, if you don't work together the results will never be what you want them to be.
We all have to start somewhere, when you start out in fashion photography your work probably won't be of a quality which is good enough to attract agency models or convince their bookers to work with you. It's the beginning of an uphill climb, the first of many challenges which you need to be prepared to face if you want to scratch out a

Fella would like to invite you to be a part of a new contest, one that looks at a medium that is often overlooked on deviantART, Film.
Since before the 1900s film has been a part of people's lives. Today, feature films are created with huge budgets in mass of $200 Million+. But, often times short films, which do not get seen as much in the United States (but are more readily available in some other countries) are some of the most impressive films.
We would like to invite you to make a short film. All the details are below, so get on it!

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.
b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day. This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.
The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to ZombieCoder for that ).
These changes are part of an ongoing initiative to better our Dai
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
