"Your True Self" Contest - Entries from November 1st, 2011 to December 17th, 2011!
Hello to all!
Deviant's Gallery will soon be hosting a HUGE event! From November 1st to December 17th, we will be holding a series of mini-contests leading up to the finale, where the winner, voted on by the Deviantart community, wins a 1 year Premium Membership! To the best of my knowledge, a Contest like this has never been held before!
Each week, a form of media will be featured as part of the Contest. We will be starting with the "easier" to create media, as to give everyone a chance to participate. The Contest will be called "Your True Self." This holds several meanings, and is open to self-interpretation! Our 6 categories for the Contest are;
-Literature - November 1st to 8th
-Self Shots - November 9th to 16th
-Cosplay - November 17th to 24th
-Modeling - November 25th to December 1st
-Digital Art - December 2nd to 9th
-Traditional Art - Dece

dA Staff Appreciation Interview: chix0r:iconchix0r:dA Staff Appreciation Interview: chix0r4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Hello fourteenthstar How is life on and off dA?
- Life is very busy, but that's good
What first bought you to deviantart, and what made you stay?
- Wallpapers! I lurked around for a while before finally opening an account. The community are what made me stay -- there's no other like it.
What do you think of the community?
- Like I said before, there's no other like it. You can connect with so many people from all over the world, different types of artists and art appreciators. There's something for everyone.
How do you feel about dASAW?
- I think it's a great example of how awesome our community is. Everyone in the community operations team came from the community, it's a requirement when applying for any job in the department. We love that deviants like to show their love for the community and that they encourage others to appreciate that staff aren't just here because they have a job to do, but that they too appreciate and love the
Daily Deviations UpdateHappy Monday MorningDaily Deviations Update4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I started this morning by signing something "Moonbam13" so either this typo means I need more coffee, or this week is going to be BAMTASTIC!
I'm rooting for the latter
I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated
The following guideline changes are in effect:
The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.
Design tips: Typography Avoid the use of the font Optima, particularly for luxury or similarly "fancy" types of clients. It looks generally dated and plain.Design tips: Typography3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Try not to pair different sans-serif fonts (ex: Arial and Helvetica), but if you do, do not use fonts that are similar. The key is to use fonts that are distinctly different, such as a condensed sans for headlines and regular sans like Helvetica or Verdana for subheads or body copy. If you use two that are similar, it will look like you mistakenly didn't update all your text with the same font.
If you want to pair a serif font with a sans-serif or vice versa, there are 3 options you should use to make your decisions:
1) Select fonts made by the same typographer, or
2) Select fonts made around the same time period, or
3) Select fonts with similarly shaped characters
(Note: The reason why the rules may be different between pairing serif/sans-serif fonts and pairing two sans-serif fonts is that serif fonts have ex

This is a informative article, outside of the normal DLD activities, to bring awareness to a pair of bills currently under much discussion and debate. These bills are called called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIP (Protect IP), presented to the House of Representatives and the senate (respectively) in the United States. Later in this article, we will also discuss how these bills have a world wide significance. At the end of the article are several links to the actual bill, news articles, and forum/journals related to this topic. Our aim here is to give to a brief overview, and to answer some questions concerning this debate.
SOPA itself is an attempt to stop online piracy both domestic and foreign by the United States Gov't. It employs a variety of tactics in order to achieve this, including scannin

How To Give Better Comments
During our visit here at deviantART, upon submitting our deviations, what is expected next? Comments! However, here's a little fun past-time activity: take all the excellent, if not better, deviations comments in your gallery. Now take a look at all the deviation comments you've ever received. You will notice that good comments don't happen as often as they should. Although we all want good comments and to be better commenters ourselves, we have to act upon it instead of just sitting around and hoping to receiving nice comments after submitting something. Give, to receive.
Here I show you the basic concept of commenting, to make yourself a better commenter; and I don't mean being a 'good' commenter since everyone comments in his or her own way. That i

Deviant Love currently depends on tooltips to communicate what certain icons mean, and provides teeny-tiny tap targets for Profile/Gallery/Faves links. I'm planning on enabling Deviant Love to detect touches, and fix these problems when it does.

GNOME-Shell Theme Selector Extension Mod + IdeasI wish to direct your attention to http://solo-dev.deviantart.com/art/Gnome-3-theme-selector-rehash-245630393 , which is a mod of fpmurphy's extension.GNOME-Shell Theme Selector Extension Mod + Ideas4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I actually also made a mod of the theme selector extension a while ago. I changed the class it uses to draw the background rectangle (behind the preview image) to a custom ".theme-selector".
I think it would be cool if people started using that, then people could have custom boxes
What prompted me to do that was how now it uses the workspace-switcher (on the right), which has rounded edges on one side, and squared on the other usually.
I also found a detail setting in the extension's guts, which you can change to make the previews nicer. I think it would be good to have the theme-selector operate in percents, so it looks good on any screen size, and isn't too big or small.
So mostly this is to see what people thing of the ideas, and I'll be sure to send this off to fpmurphy, too.

Thanks, DA.Well. Today, I just wanted to say thanks to all you guys here on DA.Thanks, DA.4 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been here for two years (man, how time flies...), and I can honestly say that you guys have had a massive impact on my life. The entire time I've been a part of this community, I have never had a bad experience... with anybody! Without the encouragement of you guys, I probably would have dropped art all together. In addition to that, the beautiful artwork and incredibly thoughtful people that I have been exposed to here have influenced me in so many ways.
So, I just wanted to say... thanks, DA. Thank you for two years of art, encouragement, and friendship. Keep up the good work!
And thank you, my dear watchers. Without you, I'd just be an unknown person, sinking in the mire of anonymity. Thank you for your support.

Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

I Hate Macs by Charlie BrookerUnless you have been walking around with your eyes closed, and your head encased in a block of concrete, with a blindfold tied round it, in the dark - unless you have been doing that, you surely can't have failed to notice the Apple Macintosh campaign starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, which has taken over magazines, newspapers and the internet in a series of brutal coordinated attacks aimed at causing massive loss of resistance. While I don't have anything against shameless promotion per se, there is something infuriating about this particular blitz. In the ads, Webb plays a Mac while Mitchell adopts the mantle of a PC. We know this because they say so right at the start of the ad.I Hate Macs by Charlie Brooker7 years ago in Personal More Like This
"Hello, I'm a Mac," says Webb.
"And I'm a PC," adds Mitchell.
They then perform a small comic vignette aimed at highlighting the differences between the two computers. So in one, the PC has a "nasty virus" that makes him sneeze like a plague victim; in another, he keeps freezing up and havi
