Comic Writing TutorialsHey deviantARTers-Comic Writing Tutorials3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just finished up a 5 part comic writing tutorial run through on my blog and figured, since there are so many comic book fans and creative-types here, I'd post links to them here in case any of you might find them useful/interesting:
Part 1: Brainstorming
Part 2: Story Pacing
Part 3: Page Planning
Part 4: Scripting
Part 5: Dialogue
This isn't any kind of absolute-must-follow method, just the way I work and a few tips. If you found these posts helpful, feel free to let me know here (or on Twitter) and share the posts with your friends.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Super busy, but alive and well.Hey all! It's been a while since Anime Expo, but just wanted to check in to say I've been alive and well if my other media outlets don't relay that. Been super busy on freelance projects like Guardians of The Galaxy, TMNT and Ultimate Spiderman, and of course, Cannon Busters at Satelight inc, which has had me leave the country pretty much the entire summer. But more updates are on the way. Thanks for sticking around and I'll post some creative stuff soon!Super busy, but alive and well.1 month ago in Personal More Like This
How's your projects coming along? Hope you're making progress!
Good luck this year!

Well... good news & bad news ...the good news is that thanks to :iconsirenabonita: we become a super group Yaaaay !!.
The bad news is that I will not do the monthly art promotion every month from now on, and this is because I do not have that much spare time as I used to have, so this will be made at 1-3 months, depends on how art piles up & how much time I will have. (This may be good news because of the number of submitted images, with more submission, there is a bigger probability of making a more quantity & quality promotion )
Have a marvelous day and good luck for the next competition !
Special art promotion for making our group a SUPER Group

Murphy Apprenticeship updateHey all!Murphy Apprenticeship update1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Everyone that donated to the Kickstarter, thanks for being patient. We hit a few delays due to the loss of our dog, Red, and my broken collar bone/shoulder which delayed The Wake. But me, my wife, and my students are almost done making the final touches, and we hope to have digital and hardcover editions available soon.
I'm thrilled to say that 3 out of 5 of my students have landed work with major publishers--two with Marvel and one with Boom! Studios...and Cafe Racer isn't even out yet. I'd love to think that the Apprenticeship had a hand in their success, but the truth is that each artist got work based on the caliber of the talent they possessed long before I got my hands on them. I did what I could for them on my end, which included sharing all my editorial contacts, vouching for their professionalism with publishers, and advising with contracts where I could. When Cafe Racer is published, I plan on handing out copies to every editor I can while

The 5 Things that Helped my Career the MostFive main points. If you can do all five of these, you're going to have a great career. Before you can strengthen your career with these concepts to follow, though, there’s something that you need first: talent. You don’t have to be born with talent, but you do have to work hard at developing it.The 5 Things that Helped my Career the Most4 months ago in Personal More Like This
#1 - Have a Career Compass.
A lot of people when asked, will say that they have an idea of what their goal is. Maybe they want to work on a game or a movie, but they don’t have it narrowed down any further than that. Be very specific about your goals. What kind of movie do you want to work on? What kind of game? Get into the details. Once you have enough details, then you can use that goal as your ‘career compass’. Whatever moves you make, make sure that you think about your compass, and think if your next move is going to take you closer to your goal. My goal was to work on a Tim Burton movie so every job and painting I did was not based on how much it paid

Photomanipulation walkthroughStep 1: Idea (message, composition)Photomanipulation walkthrough3 years ago in Personal More Like This
You decided that you want to make a photomanipulation. But what to make? There are so many photomanipulations already out there and mostly with the same theme. So you decide you don't just want to stick a pretty girl onto a beautiful background. No you want to be original and have your manipulation portray a message everyone can relate to.
Think of things that are important to you, that lay close to your heart. They can be emotions (love, hate, sadness, anger) or experiences, hobbies (art, sports etc), things you are struggling with. Or they can be global themes like (beauty, money, economy, eating disorders, war, relationships etc.)
Of course if you choose to portray something as love there are many ways to do so. Do you want it to be a surreal depiction of love, or dark, fantasy, sci-fi, conceptual, humourous... your choice will of course decide the whole 'feel' of the image.
So choose wisely as they say.
Now that you have your theme you nee
The Sean Murphy ApprenticeshipI'm thinking about taking on some students for a two week "boot camp" course in comics--based off the classic master/apprentice style of education. But before I move forward with the idea (and begin Kickstarting), I wanted to get your feedback and see if anyone is interested in enrolling this winter. Please pass this along (Twitter/facebook) to anyone you think might be interested. The Sean Murphy Apprenticeship2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I bought a house in Portland, Maine this past weekend. It's a 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom Victorian house that's been newly renovated. The top floor is finished and will become the drawing studio for 5 students. The idea is to furnish the building with tables, chairs, couches, beds, a TV, a library, a photo studio (for taking reference images) and all the other amenities that would create the school.
After selecting the 5 students (I'll take submissions that will be juried later on), we'll all meet in Portland this winter for the two week apprenticeship. The students will live i
