The Dead Places
The Visual Delicacy of Decay
It’s easy to think of art in terms of what is instantly pleasing to the eye, artworks which
evoke a feeling of joy and hopefulness and blissful peacefulness or ecstatic exultation.
This is the consideration of art as something that helps propel us forward through life – to out future great
deeds, our career victories, or dreams of coming big events. But there is a peak to every life. At some point all
people, and all places, and even all ideas have to begin the inevitable decline that is the other balancing half of a lifetime.
Comic Composition GeekoutSPECIAL GUEST STAR (against his knowledge) IS :iconandrew-ross-maclean:Comic Composition Geekout2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You guys know when I get really excited about art geekery, I JUST CAN'T KEEP IT IN. I also feel like composition is a really hard thing to learn, and all you can really do is try to learn "what is good" in composition, and then try to find examples until you can recognize it. In addition, composition for comics is extra hard because you have to worry about the overall flow of the page as well as the composition of each individual panel.
So I was doing my spring cleaning of my message center and came on some new comic pages he uploaded, all of which are awesome, but take a particular look at this one:
This page is AMAZING. I started watching this guy for his slick style and stayed for his crazy composition skills, and this page makes a particularly good example because his work is so clean and straight-forward, there's not a lot of noodling to distract from the motion lines.

Negativity in fandom, and the dreaded "thoughI was talking with a friend about how some fandoms are super fun to be a part of. And some...not so much. I regret to say, as much as I love Korra, it's not a particularly fun fandom for me. Neither was Avatar. (They're FAR from the only fandoms that suffer from the problems I'm going to be "talking" (word-vomiting) about, but they're the ones I've had the most experience with.)Negativity in fandom, and the dreaded "though3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Fandom has become a dirty word. I have literally been accused of participating in fandom. Wait, accused of what? For me, the whole idea of "fandom" can be summed up in one word: excitement. Man, I love getting excited about shit. And I LOVE talking to other people who are excited about shit! And then our excitement spirals around each other's and then we make awesome creations with that extreme excitement. EXCITEMENT-BENDING! This is what happens EVERY time I post a fanart, and I c

One of the paintings was this one- http://www.artrenewal.org/artwork/187/187/27161/a_dinner_table_at_night-large.jpg which I never really took the time to examine before. I admired the colors and general mood but, as always, seeing a painting in person is quite a different experience. His bright, not-quite-white highlights are slapped on chunkily and they come out quite far from the canvas. And they "pop" in a way no highlight has any right to- they're super juicy and effective.
When I got up really close, (this is a totally unjustified flight of fancy here guys) it looked as though he had waited for the
LIVE character design workshop- BETAHey everyone. I'm on vacation this week, but I hope you are all having a good summer so far. I wanted to announce a new program I want to start of live internet workshops/lectures on character art/character posing. I've been thinking about this for awhile, but its very intimidating figuring out the best way to do it- SO, I'm just gonna start! I need your help though. I want to hear your comments and suggestions on what, how, when this is done. Please do two things for me: 1) Comment on my thoughts below on how this can work and what will be discussed- especially any thoughts on the tech side like Paypal and internet conferencing sites and 2) hit the LIKE button on this journal if you would seriously do this. It will give me a rough headcount of what I can expect. Super important.LIVE character design workshop- BETA3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Assemblage and Collage FeatureHi all, getting restless, time to do a new feature.Assemblage and Collage Feature11 months ago in Personal More Like This
Finally submitted my last assignment at 4pm today. I think I'm done with study now. I want to apply my skills instead of keep accumulating them. I'm shockingly exhaustacapated.
Now this feature is about an area of art that I've really just begun to explore and I find it as exciting as heck.
There is something about pulling random images together, or found objects, and trying to make the seemingly disconnected connect. Arguably, on some level, everything is connected. What draws us to place things the way we do?
From the limited experimentation I've done with collage to date, I've found it to be a powerful way to tap into my subconscious. I sorta flow with what feels right and then stand back and look holistical

Charity: Water Starts the Process for the Well!I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in the charity: water project I wrote about in February of this year. Whether you were able to actively donate to, read up on, or help spread the word about this honorable cause, I genuinely felt touched by the actions of every person who took the time to participate.Charity: Water Starts the Process for the Well!2 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
I got so many inspiring and heart-warming Notes from deviants far and wide -- from those who had just donated to those who had no means to donate monetarily but who happily spread the word to others. Many even selflessly pledged their own birthdays, asking for donations to this great cause in lieu of gifts. In a world where a lot of the news headlines are depressing and bleak, my faith in the power of good and caring was restored by the deviantART community.
Some say that one should participate in charity for charity's sake, and I fully believe this.

Hard-working or lazy, reliable or capricious?
A new contest for the new year: have you ever thought of portraying your creative vein as an actual being? Would it be a handsome woman or a hard to tame bird? Or a sloth (I hope a lively one, at least)? Does it walk around with you or stays and waits in some certain places? Or catches up with you all of a sudden no matter the location?
The task is to describe or depict that part of your mind responsible for all the brilliant ideas standing behind your creations. Or would it be a self-portrait of some kind?
the 7th of March 2014the 9th of March, 3:00 pm GMT
Limit of submissions: one piece per member.
The entry must be prepared for the contest precisely.
You must be a member to participate.

I have always loved anthologies. Growing up in Britain 95 percent of the comics were weekly anthologies so it has been firmly ingrained in my psyche.
I've always felt that anthologies are a good platform for experimentation, trying new ideas and styles, introducing new talent and especially good to read in the bathroom. I'll never forget the impression Heavy Metal had on me when I first saw it.
They're perfect for those moments when you've read through the 100 comics you've bought that month and realized there wasn't a single complete story in the pile.
I've recently relaunched two previously successful anthologies, A1 and MONSTER MASSACRE.
I have also been enjoy

When first stumbling upon deviantArt, whether 5 months or 5 years ago, we decided to join because we wanted to share our art. We wanted our work to be seen, to be appreciated, to be understood. However, it can be a long and difficult journey from obscurity into the spotlight. Many newcomers and even long-time deviants are sometimes overwhelmed and discouraged by a seeming lack of interest and/or exposure for their work. After all, that's what dA is for, right? Not necessarily - the answer to that question is a bit more involved than a simple "yes" or "no".
Society in general has become used to instant gratification. Want the new album by your favorite artist? With the click of a mouse, you've got it! Need to get in touch with your cousin who's moved to Italy? It's easy -- just Skype! The college you want to attend is across the country? No problem, they offer online courses!
You may be wondering how this is relevant to dA. Well,

I'M SERIOUSLY THINKING ON TO START A CROWDFUNDING
This is it. I want to start a crowdfunding project. I am looking for good printing and shipping prizes that offers me good quality. I'm waiting for an answer from a very cool guy I have meet who is going to help me.
I think that my crowdfunding project will be an artbook. But I don't want to stay just there. I mean, the most important thing is that I want to enjoy every page I fill. Every line I do and every color I choose.
If I don't feel I'm spending a good time doing this, I should not do it. And this kind of mentallity is what makes me want to do this. Spending a super good time, and have one of the better experiences in m

Well, the theme of this contest is Music ART!
You need to draw a work listening to one of this composition about love (and several of them about suffer and something like that). Usually, songs have something like a plot, so just understand it and draw the art about this song~~
The decision about particularly THIS theme was clear - Uta no Prince-sama is anime about music ^U^
All difficulty of this contest depends on the different random songs' plots and how you may draw UtaPri characters in this situation (music situation) using draw skills and your imagination
It will be okay to draw UtaPri guys in the count what you want ^U^ If you'd like to draw a couple, it will be AWESOME really!
The best way is to draw a classic couple (Haruka+somebody), not shounen-ai one

1. Saving your .psd with all layers hidden makes a smaller file compared to saving it with all layers visible.
2. You can use the Crop Tool to quickly increase the canvas size of an image by holding down Ctrl + Alt whilst dragging the Crop Tool outside the current canvas.
3. If you want to see only one of your layers at a time, hold down Alt whilst clicking the eye icon of the layer. (do it again to show all layers again)
4. Holding down Alt while in a dialog box turns the Cancel button into a Reset button, so you can reset the values back to default.
5. If you want to just quickly check a very heavy .psd file, you can hold down Shift + Alt while clicking the Open button. This way Photoshop will open a flattened version of the file.
6. You can change the gray background that surrounds your image with the Paint Bucket Tool, just hold down Shift and make click on the background.
7. Not a very unknown tip, but if y

Today we are looking at the Literature gallery, with our Top Tips.
Before you start
READ the piece all the way through.
Read it again, making notes of what you would like to point out in your critique.
Stay Objective- you are critiquing the piece not the person.
These tips are areas which aren't just necessary in critiquing others' work, but also when self-critiquing your own writing. This is one person's suggestions and I welcome any further tips in addition.
A good opening. The opening to any form of writing doesn't necessarily need to involve a physical explosion, but it needs to have an initial hook; something to entice the reader in. It needs to be clear, something that
The Matter of the MassesI've been painting for a few years now, but I feel like I'm only beginning to grasp the importance of this concept. I'll quote Robert Henri (1865-1929) from his book, The Art Spirit, which is packed full of such profound wisdom. The Matter of the Masses1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Robert Henri stresses this point:
"Insist on the beauty of form and color to be obtained from the composition of the largest masses, the four or five large masses which cover your canvas. Let these above all things have fine shapes, have fine colors. Let them be as meaningful of your subject as they possibly can be. It is wonderful how much real finish can be obtained through them, how much of gesture and modeling can be obtained through their contours, what satisfactions can be obtained from the fine measures in area, color and value. Most students and most painters in fact rush over this; they are in a hurry to get on to other matters, minor matters."
"The beauty of the larger mass is primary
