Ok, so Im not normally one to comment on current events, but this swine flu scare and the fear-mongering about it has kind of irritated me. So heres my little rant about it.
As of Wednesday (4-29-2009) there has only been one (1) death in the U.S. linked to the swine flu, and that was of a 23 month old boy from Mexico visiting family in Texas. Sure its a tragedy, but seriously now, its just the flu. Practice common sense and be polite (i.e. cover your mouth & nose when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands regularly) and you can limit your chances of getting infected by the flu; be it swine, avian, or otherwise. Healthy humans all have whats called an Immune system, it protects us from most of the microbes and viruses that populate our planet, provided that you do get exposed to infectious things, that means not using the liquid hand sanitizer every 20 or so minutes, not washing every surface in your home with industrial grade cleanser every day, not vacuuming your rugs with a UV light vacuum, and not living in a hermetically sealed bubble all your life. Remember the movie War of the Worlds? Remember what finally killed the alien? It was the common cold. They had no immune system to fight off the infection, and they suffered for it. The same thing will happen to us if we dont expose ourselves to infection every now and then. We have immune systems for a reason people.
Another thing that irks me about this swine flu pandemic is the media coverage of it. Can we say fear-monger? Seriously, turn on the news and in less than 5 minutes youll see some breaking news report on it. The news corporations have jumped on this and are making a big deal over something far less deadly than the common cold ([link]
). Its this type of fear inducing journalism that has led to schools being closed ( [link]
W3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUnciaec8O7EyUsl ) and other activities being canceled for fear of spreading it. Seriously, one (1) kid got the sniffles and it causes two (2) schools get shut down!?! WTF! I mean seriously, people can die from the chicken pox, but we dont shut down schools when a kid gets infected with that!
This swine flu doesnt scare me. Not in the slightest. What does scare me is the media making a big deal out of this which will turn out to be something we forget about in a month or so
And to all those who ask: well what about the 150 or so people who died from this in Mexico? Mexico is not known for their health care. Nor is it known to be a place where those infected can afford medicines or treatments to care for the sick. Its not surprising that they have a higher death toll from this than other more developed countries. And for clarification, it only has been confirmed to be the cause of death in nine (9) cases there, the rest of the deaths are just presumed to be related.
Anyway, this is my rant. Im not concerned with your comments on it, and I certainly mean no disrespect to Mexico and/or Mexicans. Thank you for taking the time to read this, it gave me a chance to sneeze on your keyboard and cough on your pillow. LOL.
