(The Palmer Raids mentioned in the text were something of an extension of the Red Scare and a brand of xenophobia stoked by the Great War. In 1919 and 1920, under then Attourney General Alexander Palmer, thousands of individuals were arrested, detained and in some cases deported, often for mere association with leftist organizations.)
