A Beginner's Guide to Archery in Stock and ArtWith movies like Avengers, Brave and Hunger Games, 2012 seems to be the Year of the Archers and many artists have already been inspired to create their own archer characters.A Beginner's Guide to Archery in Stock and Art2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Whether you're thinking about having one of your OCs pick up bow and arrow (in writing or drawing) or you're a stock artist who wants to create some decent archery stock, I hope this little guide helps you understand the wonderful thing that is archery.
First and foremost, a little disclaimer: For this article I will mainly draw from my own experiences over the past few years. I am what you'd call an intuitive or instinctive archer, which roughly comes closest to medieval-styled archery. At the moment I'm shooting a modern Samick bow (without stabilizer or sights) and am in the process of making my own recurve bow out of robinia wood (similar to a few bows you can see in my gallery).
However, in archery there are many styles and differences in material used, draw, stance, finger position etc. – it all depend
Inspiration: What Did Princess Ukok Look Like?Found here at the Mary SueInspiration: What Did Princess Ukok Look Like?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The mummified remains of "Princess" Ukok, as the scientists named her, was discovered nearly twenty years ago in the Altai mountain range in East-Central Asia. Kept for all that time in Novosibirsk, Russia, it was not until very recently that she's been revealed to the rest of us. But among the general wonder and fascination that always comes with finding mummified and ancient bodies, Princess Ukok has another: She's covered in remarkably preserved, completely badass tattoos.
People have been tattooing themselves and each other for almost as long as humanity has existed; it just seems embedded in human nature to adorn our bodies in one way or another, whether through cheap drugstore eyeshadow or ancient ritual inking.
Princess Ukok and her warriors are believed to be members of the Pazyryk nomads who existed as early as the 5th century BC when they were

Art School or State School?Hey Friends, I published this on Doodle Alley already, but I thought you guys might benefit from this kind of discussion too. Let me know what you think!Art School or State School?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I've been (quietly) following your cartoon essays for a while--I adore them and appreciate you sharing them.
I imagine you get a lot of emails from people asking about creative direction, their meaning in life, existential angst, etc. And I know you're a cartoonist and not a licensed therapist (although hey, I never claimed to know everything about you), but I was hoping you'd be able to help me.
I'm pursuing a career in comics. I *wish* I could say that I was attending the School of Visual Arts, the Art Center College of Design, etc., but those are rather cost-prohibitive. Instead my soul is being sucked out of me at a public university.
I'm aware that where I attend school isn't the end-all of what career I have and what level of success I reach, but I'm not learning what I want to learn. Currently in my drawing clas

American Comics, Manga...AND WAR!This is a major turning point in the history of comics, World War II. This period of time not only changed comics as we knew them, but also other areas in graphics such as propaganda posters. Now mid to late 1930's we've seen the birth of the modern comic book. Due to the war as well we're also now seeing the birth of war comics. An obvious example of this as I'm sure many of you have already guessed is Captain America Comics in 1941 (before American involvement in the war). Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby who worked for Timely Comics, which of course has now become Marvel Comics. He gained amazing popularity and is often fighting the Axis powers in World War II.American Comics, Manga...AND WAR!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Around this time in Japan has been rebuilding itself, its political and economic infrastructure was changing. Whilst American occupation disallowed art or published material that glorified war or the Japanese military. This policy though didn't block th
Mutiple Thefts of deviantART Stock Models: UpdatedCurrent Update, Feb 9: It seems that the artworks created with the DA stock models have been taken down from all sites. This is good news! I hope the artist will be in touch with the models they have used. It seems possible through what I've heard from these models in their research that this artist may have found these images on a 'free stock' site. Please be aware of any site that is set up with a huge variety of fabulous, high quality images for commercial use, for free. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.Mutiple Thefts of deviantART Stock Models: Updated1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
An Italian artist has been using stock images from DA's portrait models as the source of her professional work without notifying the models or crediting them. In most cases, these models do not allow commercial use of their stock without permission.
Here is a list of models discovered to have been used so far.
Fabric Stores and AndrocentrismA message from an artist and someone who works at a fabric store: Stop gendering your babies with colour!Fabric Stores and Androcentrism2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Every day I have parents and grandparents-to-be come in and have fabric cut to make quilts, blankets, baby clothes, diapers, curtains, etc for their soon to be newborn. And yet, I'm always asked the same questions over and over:
"What do you have that's for girls?"
"Where is the boys section?"
"We won't know the gender, so we need to keep it neutral until it's born"
And worst of all: "Does this fabric look too girly to you?"
I usually give some sort of half-hearted, "Well, it's your choice, I'm sure they'll love it!" response, but my secret answer is: QUIT IT. No, that fabric is not "too girly". Why would an infant boy care if his pillow has pink flowers on it? Why would a girl care if it has footballs or zoo animals on it? Why are pink and blue so wholeheartedly reserved for girls and for boys that the thought of giving that colour to the other gender is laughable, or worse
