Two Kinds the Same - Chapter I.Two Kinds the Same - Chapter I.8 months ago in Romance More Like This
Author’s note: This story takes place in the Mass Effect universe, featuring a series of canon and original characters, while focusing on the curious relationship of a human man and a turian woman during the time when the whole galaxy was marching unseen into its sinister fate... just like every 50 000 years.
A bit of romance, humour, action and some insights behind the events, which you thought you already knew everything about from Mass Effect.
Thank you to Xeno-Sapian for his fantastic and inspirational work 'A Matter of Race and Character', and his generous support in writing Two Kinds the Same. While Two Kinds the Same is an original story, which follows the Mass Effect canon, it also precedes and intertwines with 'A Matter of Race and Character'.

AN: This particular story uses What If Volume 1 Issue #6 as its inspiration, but I consider it to take place in a universe of my own creation, so I will play hard and lose with Marvel continuity (even alternate reality continuity) as it pleases me. I will not directly say what year it takes place in at any point in the story, but to help you get a general idea, you may assume that this story starts in (prepare for irony) 2004.
Chapter one, Changes: In which Reed Richards loses everything except what matters to him most.
After taking care of a base need (and a few sanitary ones afterwards) Reed Richards returned to the bedroom that he and his, for lack of a more scientific term, girlfriend Susan Storm shared. Though she'd been asleep when last he laid eyes on her, while Reed had been busy she had woken up, and gotten dressed. A wide and lazy smile dwelt upon her face as she sat cross legged on the bed they shared. We

i will not grant you pretty words
though they burn in my veins
and force me to breathe,
as if my fey-child scripture
ever could withstand you
and the scars you carved in my DNA.
they breed in my throat,
a transcendental code sacrosanct
as the prayers you whisper,
and the vows you took in obligation
only to hide your transgression
(twenty-six years, three months, twenty days)
and write in me the fear
of being erased.
so maybe you can't understand
how i made myself not hate you
when i thought you would die
just in case
i want to throw my fury
at your feeble body and
like zeus to your cronus
though i've always been cast
as hermes instead
for every second i've stared myself down
just to prove the balance of genetics
lies not in your favour
teaching myself to drive stick
so i could run farther
from who you wanted me to be

with a near-perfect sketch

Wolf's Bane - Act 1It was a quiet piece of blacktop in the middle of a densely wooded area somewhere just within the town limits of Samhein. The sun was trying to break free from the heavy foliage of the area, but having a tough time doing so early this morning. As the sun was rising, small specks of light beamed their way down towards the pavement below, creating a strange, unnatural world as light and darkness blended together in a world of natural and unnatural. Several broken branches laid over the yellow line dividing the road in two, their leaves broken off and smashed flat down as they found a place to rest. A couple sounds of the forest could be heard off in the distance if one would listen carefully: the chirps of a few crickets, the final hoots of an owl before calling it a day, the small traces of a babbling brook that runs its way through the forest. But soon enough, another more mechanical sound began to break up the peaceful serenity of the scene. It was the sound coming from a large red, wWolf's Bane - Act 18 years ago in Fantasy More Like This

So you want to hear yet ANOTHER story, huh? A story of a strange visitor to our little backwater? You know what, hell with this. What are you twelve? Why do you want to hear so many damn stories for anyways?
Argh....fine. But this is the last time.
Shut it. Now where was I? Oh right. For as long as time can recall, there have been Sirens. Beautiful, deadly women with untapped amounts of raw power at their fingertips. Don't think they are immortal, they can die like anyone else out there. But there will always be six of them at any moment in time. I know of only four that have found their way here to Pandora. First off, we had that crazy Crimson Lance Commandant Steele.....what a bitch she was, but she died when the first Vault was opened. Second we had poor Angel........Not gonna go into details about her just now. Then our little leader, Firehawk Lil

The reason the alarm (also known as her cellphone) had been carefully placed across the room was so Thayle would be forced to actually get up out of bed to turn it off. It was either that or suffer the warbling upbeat tune of The Bangles so hellishly early in the morning.
Struggling to pull her brain out of its shroud of cobwebs, Thayle rolled over and yelped when something jabbed her neck. Something pointy and ... plastic.
Thrust. She groaned as the small jet stirred and burrowed closer to her neck. With a sigh, she fumbled to untangle him from her hair despite the Seeker's sleepy protests. She never knew when any of the apartment's smaller denizens would decide her pillow-space was up for grabs in the middle of the night, but Thrust in particular seemed to lay a persistent claim to it. He was not usually the sharing type, but he could be very generous about his sharp angles and pointy appendages.
Laying the snoozing Seeker back onto her pillow, Thayle fought down a

The driving rain thundered angrily against the roof of the tin shed. Underneath the overhang, Chell had collapsed, wet, cold, and exhausted beyond all belief. It had been days since she'd found food, days since she'd slept. She was fortunate enough to find a little stream where fresh water flowed, but the strange creatures that occupied that space - large, bipedal squidlike things that shot sticky, fetid masses of goo - allowed her no rest or reprieve. She didn't want to return to Aperture, to that aggressive AI who wanted her for nothing more than insults and amusement, but deep down she knew she had no other choice.
She had been sitting in the wet mud for several minutes now, inexplicably hesitant to try the door. The shed's overhang offered little protection from the rain, and a cold blast of wind announced the approaching night. Giving a resigning sigh, she raised a weary hand to knock on the metal door, fully aware that GLaDOS's cameras had probab

Mrrsizha chuckled. "I never told you in the first place, Brynjolf." He grunted irritably in response and she shot him a grin over her shoulder. "You'll see."
He exhaled softly, an exasperated not-quite-sigh, but didn't push, and for that Mrrsizha was grateful. She hadn't told Brynjolf their destination for a reason: she didn't think he'd be very happy about it.
The Khajiit's ears perked as they rounded the cliff and she stopped short, holding up a hand. Brynjolf made a questioning sound, stopping just behind her. "Lass?"
"The lantern." Mrrsizha didn't carry a lantern--she didn't need one, even in the blackest of nights--but Brynjolf did, lacking her feline night-vision. Oh, he could see well enough in the dark--any thief worth their salt could--but he preferred not to impair his vision in the wilds, if he could help it. It was all too easy for Skyrim's wildlife to sneak up on you in the dark.
He didn't answer her, but after a moment the light fr
