Beyond the Extended Cut... I will reignite. And so the end creeped upon us. With the Extended Cut behind me I can finally say that I've seen the full extent of how BioWare wanted to end the Mass Effect trilogy... And I disliked it. Don't get me wrong, the Extended Cut is a vast improvement over the vanilla endings and I think that everyone should check it out - but it is still the same unfitting ending, it is still something taken out from another story and sewn onto Mass Effect's glistening skin, with it still kicking and screaming (yes, this is just a personal opinion and no, I am not bitter about that - I just dislike how it ended). The themes that made Mass Effect so great are still either nowhere to be found, or twisted around to present a vision I just cannot accept as something that belongs there. My fanface is itching, my writer sense tingling... Not the way I want to end one of the greatest sci-fi experiences of my nerdy little life.Beyond the Extended Cut... There will be no extended cuts to the Extended Cut. Either you love the current finale,

Yet again the Mass Effect Fandom proved that it will not leave the ending in the state it was presented in the game. A certain (fan!) mod was created (and is right now in the testing phase) a Happy Ending Mod for ME3. We can destroy the Reapers, Shepard lives (EDI and Geth too) and most importantly of all we don't have to worry about the Star Child.
Instruction how to install it and the mod itself can be found here:
You can also check how the mod works here on youtube:

Critique and youThere was a small discussion in my last journal about unhelpful tutorials, that touched the topic of critique.Critique and you1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
So, I decided to talk about critique for a bit.
In the online art community there is no unified stance on critique. Some people are totally incapable of recieving any form of critisism of their creation and think it's the devil. Some think that critique is should always be a "sandwich". Some people think that anything goes and the artist should listen to all feedback if he chooses to publish art online. Some say critique is only valid "constructive" and some say that it doesn't take a chef to know the steak was burnt.
I'll talk about how I percieve it - and mind you, my perception had changed over the years. This is more about what I figured during this time.
Point 1: Feedback is essential for development. That's not a solely artistic thing. Every human activity implies there's a trial and error process involved in the honing of any skill and being taught that skill. Thing is,

Art by Allison Smith.
"Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up."
One of my favorite lines from Batman Begins. However, there are moments where it's rather difficult to get back up, and sometimes we require that one special kick in the ass.
From each tumble, we learn a valuable lesson. A year or so ago, I had hit a personal wall that was proving too difficult to force through. Art, which is usually front and center, took a back sea--and while we've all had art blocks--that wasn't the only issue.
It began with my roommate of two years, whom had decided it was time to move else where. With such a sudden interruption, I had to find a new home and in less than 30 days.
Having also been through a bleak breakup months prior, and finding myself with no pending freelance work and
A concise guide on how to get better at artSo youre a kid looking down at your anime or comic characters and wondering why after a few years of doodling things arent looking like how you imagine them in your head. Maybe youre an older fellow or lady whos dabbling in art and youre having trouble with drawing hands. You want to get better at representational art.
Here on deviantart its often the case where a noobie will ask a question and another noobie will answer with the very uninspired answer of "practice practice practice." At its core this advice is sound, but the noobie-teacher has just regurgitated what he or she has heard a thousand times over from other would-be noobie-teachers and has not expressed much else. Diligence is the key, but without a direction or goal this diligence might be

What program do you use?
Adobe Photoshop CS5
Corel Painter 11
What kind of tablet do you use?
Wacom Intuos 4
Where did you learn to draw?
I was using cheat codes from the very start - both my parents are artists + my mum was organizing weekend drawing courses in our very house. You can pretty much say I spent my whole childhood in an art school.
When I was in high school I was attending course preparing for exams into the faculty of architecture. This is the course: www.labirynt.pl
During the first and second year at the university we had some drawing/painting/sculpting lessons but they kinda sucked. Besides they were worth only 1/10th of the ECTS points you could get from pretty much any other subject so nobody gave a shit.
Will you make any tutorials?
Probably not. I don't feel competent enough.
Unofficial Q and A With Patrick WeekesOver the weekend at PAX East a fan managed to get some face time with Bioware writer Patrick Weekes in order to talk about ME3's characters, endings, and the little things some fans might have caught while going through ME3.Unofficial Q and A With Patrick Weekes3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the interviewer's original post.
"Okay, here is what I asked Patrick Weekes, and his answers as best as I can remember them. I've paraphrased but I'm doing my best to stick to what he said rather than introduce any interpretation.
THESE ARE NOT DIRECT QUOTES.
-Is there still a setting to explore after the ending? Is everything ruined?
The setting is definitely not ruined. We still have a big, lively galaxy.
-Will long-distance superluminal travel still be possible post-Ending? (will Tali or Wrex or Garrus see their homeworlds again? Will everyone starve?)
Galactic civilization will rebuild. The mass relays were not necessary for interstellar flight. Remember, what does it say in the Codex about the speed of ships? That's right, 12 lightyears per (day? hour?

Listen I don't really care if I'm rude for saying this but going to someone's page and constantly pushing them to read or look at your work is not cool, neither is whining when they don't immediately respond to you. Frankly doing this puts a stain on the person, both mentally and emotionally. Please consider that the person might not have time to look/comment/respond to you or your work. If they can they will get to it but also keep in mind that and to be honest we don't have to. I'm not trying to be overly mean about this but it is the truth. They really don't have to, and pushing about it is only gonna make it less likely for the person to even want to look.
I suppose this does sound really rude but it's the truth and I'm tired of suga
Mass Effect - It's almost over. This makes me very sad.Mass Effect - It's almost over.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
With the announcement of the final single-player DLC, Citadel comes the knowledge that it will all be over, one way or another. It could be argued that it was "over" when BioWare and EA collectively crapped on the entire Mass Effect universe almost a year ago and that, despite the Extended Cut patching up most of the holes they blew in their own franchise, their failings effectively killed what was, up to then, one of the most epic creations since the original Star Wars trilogy.
I knew that it would all come to an end one day and, despite everything, I'm still rather deflated. I'd feel this way regardless of the quality of the ending to the trilogy because for me it's been an emotional rollercoaster and, all things considered, a fucking blast!
I'm not really getting my hopes up for this DLC but I will still be getting it because I want to - a barmy notion, I know! Leviathan was alright and I will be playing Omega again before I pass my final judgement as I rushe
No Extended Cut News for the Bioware show at E3Sure to be a downer to many readers, there will be no coverage on the Extended Cut DLC shown at this year's E3. As it stands, it simply isn't ready yet.No Extended Cut News for the Bioware show at E33 years ago in Personal More Like This
In response to some agitated posters on the BSN, Chris Priestly said:
"If the Extended Cut was ready to have an announcement on a date or similar the PR team would likely want to announce, However, since the Extended Cut is not yet ready to be announced, there is no date for E3. It is that simple."
Going on, in another post;
"The Extended Cut is being worked on. The team has been listening to what fans have asked for and are using suggestions to help create it. It is too soon to talk about it yet. I have seen some early work (no I will not give details) and what is being done is very good. When the product is ready to be discussed (as decided by the team making it), then there will be details, release dates, etc."
Although I haven't seen any official statement, I assume Bioware--and possibly Mass Effect-- will be featured at E3 to some

EMPOWERED cosplay, now with painted-on latex! At the Toronto Comic Arts Festival last weekend, ace photographer (and karaoke-er*) Paul Hillier was kind enough to drop off some prints of a seriously badass Empowered cosplay shoot he had arranged. He took the concept of Emp cosplay to a whole 'nother level, via an exciting new frontier in costuming: painted-on latex! Not only is this arguably the ideal cosplay medium to approximate Emp's unearthly supersuit, it's definitely the best medium to depict the tearing of the suit's membrane (as seen in a photo emulating an Empowered cover, complete with logo).EMPOWERED cosplay, now with painted-on latex!3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Drell female officially revealed - Irikah Krios in ME Foundation
Do you remember lieutenant Abrudas from ME:Evolution comic? Yes, that was the first Turian female even shown during the cycle of Mass Effect trilogy.
And now a preview of a new issue of ME: Foundation #12 has appeared... and inside... First official appearance of a Drell Female.
This time they showed Thane's wife that is known to the players through Thane's tales about his past.
So for the time being I'll upload the screens from the preview:
What do you think?
Abrudas was shown several months before Omeda DLC and the official design for Turian females didn't stray far from the comic version.
Maybe that means ME4 will have Drell Females. Who knows. If so, they probably will be similar to Irikah.

So there is this group of people on dA who take some already existing art and cut out the backgrounds. That's all. They find some artwork, usually anime fanart, cut the background out, add their own watermark and BAM post it to their galleries as a free to use stocks without the permission of the original authors.
What's most infuriating there is almost always a disclaimer such as this one :
Oi, dumbfucks! Yes I'm talking to you. Why should anyone credit you for something that you did not create. You've contributed nothing. You've cut the background out, something that in most cases, can be done basically automatically by a computer program with a little to no human assistance.
The whole dA's category for stock renders is flooded with this shit --> http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/stockart/3drenders/
I'm sorry but I was under the impression that a render is a 2d image generated from a 3d

Gothic 5 AeternusRecently, rumours have been going round the Internet about the Gothic saga and its probable next part – Gothic 5. All this started after Piranha Bytes, the developer of parts 1-3 of the saga, regained the rights for the brand. Sadly enough, the standalone expansion for Gothic 3 “Forsaken Gods” as well as “Arcania: Gothic 4”, which were not developed by PB, left a large part of the fans unsatisfied. That’s why questions appeared, if we can assume, that Piranha Bytes will conquer the hearts of gamers from all over the world once more?Gothic 5 Aeternus2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
You only need to type “Gothic 5” in your search engine and you will find numerous websites about the probable continuation of our beloved saga. Mike Hoge (the production manager of Gothic 1-3) and other people from Piranha Bytes staff don’t deny, that such game may be developed, but at the moment they ca
