Legolas closed his eyes and tried to trick the ranger into thinking he was asleep.
Legolas, I know you are not asleep! the ranger said in an annoyed tone. Although the elf did not notice, his fingers were in his mouth, and he was chewing on them. Grow up and stop biting your nails! came the same annoyed voice. Aragorn really was getting irritated.
Legolas sat up. Hadnt his father said almost the same thing when he was young? He rolled his eyes. Oh brother, he muttered to himself in Silvan. He knew the only other person in the group who might be able to understand him was Aragorn, who was glaring at him.

Legolas heard the young woman vomit and told a passing guard. The guard sent a questioning eye towards Aragorn, but the elf insisted it was only drunkenness. Aragorn still lay on the cold stone floor, subdued by the blow to his stomach.
Legolas glared at the drunken mass and marveled at how ale could change a person. 'Lying to oneself solves nothing' he told himself. The elf had known the man for years, over a decade now, and the side of him that had shown itself in the past days was a new one. This, until now, subtle difference had appeared…when? What had triggered it? 'The woman, Hir-mani,' Legolas thought, answering his own question. 'It is her fault; Aragorn was the same Aragorn as always until her arrival! ...I should feel anger towards her, or at least resentment, but not this…not pity.'

Eowyn was trying her best to keep everyone's spirits up during their long journey to Helms Deep. She was having an amusing conversation with Gimli the dwarf, who she thought to have a very good sense of humor. The elf, Legolas, who was riding somewhere not far behind them, usually did also, but he had been very quiet for the past half hour or so.
