Pony OC Contest!Pony OC Contest!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Do you guys like contests? Of course you do!
In order to celebrate reaching over 500 watchers, and just as a general thank you to all you lovely people for the faves and comments, I'm running my first contest! Now, I know the most common contest is a watcher giveaway, but I wanted to do something a little more interesting...
So, what do I have to do?
Simple! Draw me your pony OC, upload it to DA and leave a link to it in this journal. Don't have an OC? Now's a good excuse to make one.
- Only submit your own OC
- Only submit your own drawing
- Only submit a PONY OC
- Entries can be digital or traditional
- Please don't use a pony maker/generator. I don't want to see any pony recolours - we can do better than Hasbro, right?
- You don't have to be a watcher or share this journal to enter (though I'd appreciate it if you did )

New York City-based artist Alex Myung (~alexmyung) has started a Kickstarter project to raise $20,000 to create Arrival, an animated short film with a focus on the theme of coming out. Equalitopia sits down with Alex to discuss the project.
Currently, the project has raised almost $4,000 from 74 different backers, averaging out to about $52 per backer. Keep in mind that Kickstarter projects are “all or nothing,” meaning that if the project doesn’t reach its funding goal by Wednesday, February 20th, no funds will be transferred to the project.
Equalitopia: Could you tell us briefly about the storyline of Arrival?
Alex: Arrival is about a young boy growing up

SWAMP THING: The Orchestral ScoreGot a weird treats for you all,SWAMP THING: The Orchestral Score3 years ago in Personal More Like This
For years, whenever I've been intensively drawing a comic project I often felt the need the write myself some music. I've found out multiplying my creative output mysteriously benefit them all. There is, usually, no link bridging my Comic and musical world. Some fugues and some String Quartet sketches have been paired with Batman Incorporated for instance.
This time, being so enthusiast for swamp thing, I went and wrote the scored for issue 7 & 8. OK, not really, but I've tried to cover their thematic stuff in a 3:16 of Full Orchestral Music.
Here a breakdown of the cues:
00:00 The timeless mystery of the Green
00:49 Growth and fate of the Green Warrior
1:36 The Rot
2:00 A bit of actionny big battle for those who got bored until now.
May you enjoy this roughs mix.

Why It Sucks To Be a Cosplayer on HalloweenArt By :iconraggedy-annedroid:Why It Sucks To Be a Cosplayer on Halloween2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So it is Halloween. I am a cosplayer. Here it is, the greatest of all dress up holidays! And I am always disappointed. Here are the top 5 reasons it sucks to be a cosplayer at Halloween.
1) Friends (including friends of friends) come out of nowhere to ask for costumes. They just ask for a little help. On their giant full body armor masterpiece. The week before Halloween. Because you know, you make costumes and it's easy for you. And the price? Well, it's "for a friend" price. Which is always "free" or "I'll pay you $20 never" which boils down to "get you a shot of Jack sometime." Sadface.
2) Costumes in my closet everywhere, but none for Halloween. Yes, I have over 60 costumes. No, none of them will ever be recognized at a Halloween party. One year I dressed as Pris from Blade Runner out on the town, which I thought would b

Scanning Tutorial for Clean Pencil drawingsWhen I do a finished pencil drawing, I typically keep the drawing as clean as possible while drawing it. This saves in clean up time during the scanning process. I do that by starting my under-drawing with a very light (hard) pencil lead. 4H Mechanical Lead Holder. After I have established the structure, perspective and loose details of the drawing I go over the drawing tightening every thing up with a darker (softer) lead. H Lead.Scanning Tutorial for Clean Pencil drawings7 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the past I've used 2H, but ended up drawing harder to get a nice dark line and was pressing grooves into the page. This just makes it hard to ink. Anything darker than 2H will be likely to start smearing as you rub your hand over the drawing, resulting in a general gray "haze" over the whole drawing. TO AVOID SMEARING AS I DRAW, I place a piece of typing paper under my hand to cover portions of the underdrawing while working on it. Sometimes for pages I will even mask off, or tape pages together, leaving a window of just the panel Im working on open to dr

I would like to know how you learned to draw, how you were starting and what you use today to improve and learn more about the art of drawing.
Did you just draw for fun and did you teach everything to yourself? Did you use books about drawing techniques? Did or do you study art in courses and school classes?

Homes Smell Ya Later prop tutorial-thing!Sooooo... yes.Homes Smell Ya Later prop tutorial-thing!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I will attempt to NOT ramble on this thing because that is definitely a thing I do.
Recently I was asked about how I made the prop for my Karkat cosplay--the Homes Smell Ya Later--so without a long preamble, I'll just kind of outline it here as best I can. Fortunately, I took a fairly decent crop of progress pics!
Materials used in making this prop:
plywood 2 chunks of 1/2 inch thick MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) about 5 in. long and no more than 2 in. wide wood glue four 3/4 inch screws wood putty wood filler matte acrylic paint acrylic sealer (it's one of those little bottles that people ignore that is sold with regular paint) Mod Podge Hard Coat (purple jar) matte acrylic varnish
Tools used in making this prop:
Dremel push drill (but a regular drill will work fine) scroll saw hand saw clamp wood rasp (a pretty g
Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.Tutorials and techniques3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.

Nuances of an Annual Ritual
Which brings us to each year’s communal celebration of the passing of our lifetimes:
New Year’s Eve
So what did you “actually get done” in the past year? How closer are you to a grand goal in life? An assessment is made and then the inevitable Step 2 of the yearly process is engaged, which is often a word for word repeat of last year’s Step 2:
The New Year’s Resolution
There seem to be two main strategies that emerge at this point of facing the New Year, a “brand new morning.” The lone wolf quietly acknowledges goals not yet reached, and is even more secretive in the “new plan.” “I’ll show them,” becomes the new privat
A public service announcementDuring the years of the George W. Bush administration a new modus operandi was forged for the GOP through both actions and (even on a couple of occasions) direct statements: "Facts are irrelevant." Since the 2008 election many of the loudest voices in the the GOP (and their media cheerleaders) have pursued that approach with gusto. Perhaps their greatest monument to that practice has been in characterizing the Affordable Care Act ("ACA" aka "Obamacare"). The result has been a confused citizenry that is uncertain whether lies, repeated after being dis-proven, must somehow be true. That can be seen in many of the recent man on the street interviews and polls that have gone viral – perhaps the most telling among them are the ones asking people the ignorance-revealing question if they like "the Affordable Care Act" better than "Obamacare".A public service announcement1 year ago in Personal More Like This
