These are before and after paintings I did for myself a while back in PS CS3. Havent painted too much for a while now, however it fits the theme so I decided to upload it again for the contest just cuz.
Edit: I'm really happy for been selected among the 50 semi-finalist It was an unexpected surprise: I saw loads of messages this late morning and I was perplexed at first...until I found out the selection Thank you for all the comments and favs. I really appreciate it and I hope to be able to thank all of you soon However a global thank you for the ones that I couldn't thank properly
Few days before the deadline I finally decided to enter this competition It was quite rewarding to remake an old drawing even tho it would have turned out better if I had started earlier..
I really like the original work because it's quite unique comparing to other things i used to draw at the time. And I really got a weird inspiration for it at the middle of the night I had to get up from bed to draw this. While drawing the new version of my maahinkainen I noticed that I had accidentally(?) drawn 6 fingers in his left hand so ofc I repeated the "mistake" in the remake
First of all, my gallery is quite a fresh one - one year old. So it wasn't much space for me to show off too much, hehe.
What I wished to accomplish anyway? To show that I became better in composition, choosing perspective and angles, placing my characters and displaying action and dynamism. I know it's less "pretty" in a way, but I didn't aim for polished art for this scene.
I also wanted to use the same media, same style - I think it is just fair.
EDIT Woah, I've got in the semi-finals - totally surprised! *__* Especially because I do realize - as I've said - my 2nd pict is less refined and pretty. This makes me EXTRA happy that people still could see my point and that are more in a pict than being shiney and polished. I have to admit, I was even a bit disapointed that many picts I liked didn't make it in there. Too bad. = ( I had interesting conversations with people because of this contest about art, improvement and how people think so many times, using digital tools over traditional is an improvement on its own, or changing style (like from simplified to realistic) is as well. When it is really not. And how very often the "after" images still doesn't show improvement on basic art skills like anatomy, lighting, composition ect. Anyway, I was happy to talk to these people and share these views, it was really refreshing! I wanted to do this meme for ages already but I'm glad for this contest to finally kicked me to do so.
I've always wanted to do this meme, so when DA put this contest out... I was all over it!
Or, I was when I first read about it, anyway. School quickly swept me away, and to be honest... I should probably still be working on art for school, ahah 8D;
Anyway, I wanted to show what I've learned most--lighting, anatomy, dynamism.. among other things. If you've ever perused my gallery to the time I drew the first one, you'll notice a lot of white... in the form of blank background space. I'm proud to say I no longer find white acceptable, lol. With the redraw, I tried to keep the new piece in the spirit of the old one, namely the posing.
Forte has been a long time favorite of my characters (Yeah I know I don't draw her anymore, but she's being saved for the next project ). Those who have watched me for a long, long time know she got a modern redesign a couple years back, but I've always liked this outfit of hers too, so I kept with it in the new piece.
I wrote more about the redraw itself in its actual deviation page. Check it out to see details better!
As for the contest itself, good luck to everyone! I'm hoping for semi-finals, at least... but so many good entries already.
But, no matter what happens, here's to improvement!
I decided to redraw "Song of the bird" partly because I really thought it could need a remake (I mean, just look at those feet in the old one! ) and partly because of my friend , who didn't really like it before. So this remake is for her, hope she'll like it!!
I wish I'd have more time to refine the details and such, but since the deadline is today...
Some of the details can't be seen in this small picture, but I'll upload a bigger version so you'll see them (if looking closely)
Like I said, I wished I had more time, but this is all I can do for now
